“Don’T Make Fun Of The Residents!” Revisiting The Sunbelt’S Vanishing Communities: Mobility And Suburban Development, 1900-1990, Jerry D. Wallace May 2021

“Don’T Make Fun Of The Residents!” Revisiting The Sunbelt’S Vanishing Communities: Mobility And Suburban Development, 1900-1990, Jerry D. Wallace

History ETDs

“Don’t Make Fun of the Residents” examines home ownership and suburban development over the last one hundred years in the borderlands, American West, and Sunbelt regions. In this dissertation I argue that mobility shaped urban planning, neighborhood design, and architectural identity in the Sunbelt over the course of the twentieth century. “Don’t Make Fun of the Residents” places architectural identity at the center of this dissertation discussion to understand the origins of the Sunbelt as a geographic and intellectual space. I focus in particular on smaller cities in the intermountain West---New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Arizona, and California---an area that has …

The Maine Press Association Takes A Stand: Promoting Professional Identity In The Nineteenth Century, Stephen Banning Oct 2020

The Maine Press Association Takes A Stand: Promoting Professional Identity In The Nineteenth Century, Stephen Banning

Maine History

This research sought to examine the Maine Press Association in relation to its motivations, particularly in reference to whether the association members saw themselves as professionals. The only other nineteenth century press association which has been examined for evidence of professional aspirations is the Missouri Press Association, in which it has been found that members were actively seeking to professionalize, modeling themselves after the traditional professions of doctors, lawyers and the clergy. References to journalists as professionals are present at an early point in the Maine Press Association’s history, and the number of references increase within a few years after …

Passive In Nature: How May Swenson Approaches The Natural World, Adrian Thomson Apr 2020

Passive In Nature: How May Swenson Approaches The Natural World, Adrian Thomson

Student Research Symposium

The poet May Swenson speaks frequently of the relationship of humans and the environment, as her speakers attempt connection with the natural world. Various studies in ecocriticism have argued whether humankind is 'part of or apart from the natural world,' and how the former association of which can lead to an unhealthy over-revering of nature (Orr). The latter viewpoint, 'apart from,' has become more prevalent now that our planet has entered the Anthropocene, described as 'our contemporary geologic era, marked by humanity's fateful emergence as a climatological force' intent on obtaining the world's resources (Marrs 201). Swenson places humankind's reverence …

Robert F. Stockton, Marvin L. Duke Jun 2018

Robert F. Stockton, Marvin L. Duke

Naval War College Review

While not generally known, the Congress of the United States directed the President as early as 1819 to use armed ships off the coasts of the United States and Africa to suppress the slave trade. The following year the U.S. Navy's first African squadron began patrolling the West Coast of Africa and along the traditional slave route a practice which was to last for more than 40 years. The history surrounding this squadron and one of its outstanding officers, Lt. Robert F. Stockton, provides us with a fascinating look at the young U.S. Navy and the part it played in …

Current Strategic Theories, Benjamin M. Simpson Iii Jun 2018

Current Strategic Theories, Benjamin M. Simpson Iii

Naval War College Review

Any discussion of the theories of strategy in the modern world can bog down in a morass of details and equivocations. Particular care must be taken to identify the major themes or structural members of this complex subject. With this in mind, the theories of strategy discussed here relate only to the use of force in the modern world. In other words, this examination is limited only to theories having a military application.

The Reserves & National Guard, John R. Probert Jun 2018

The Reserves & National Guard, John R. Probert

Naval War College Review

In July 1965 the Johnson administration made the fateful decision of relying on the draft rather than calling up the Reserves to augment U.S. forces in Vietnam. By virtue of this action the traditional role of the Reserves was abandoned to the eventual detriment of the politicians who made the decision and to the military services themselves. By examining the role of Reserve forces in America's civil-military relations, as they have evolved to the present day, we may be able to appreciate better the significance of the Reserves not only to the military, but to our political system and American …

Midshipman & Cadet Profiles & National Norms, Charles L. Cochran Jun 2018

Midshipman & Cadet Profiles & National Norms, Charles L. Cochran

Naval War College Review

This paper is based on the growing recognition of the political impact of the military. The military not only transmits its codes and mores to those who join its ranks, but also attracts people whose images, habits, motives, and values appear to have the greatest chance of fulfillment in the military service. Although the service academies are relatively small institutions1 they produce an overwhelming majority of the officers who attain flag rank. Therefore they have an influence out of proportion to their numbers in determining military policy as well as in giving direction to the military's overall orientation toward the …

The Future Course Of World Politics 1972-1987, Joseph C. Strasser, Richard H. Wyttenbach Jun 2018

The Future Course Of World Politics 1972-1987, Joseph C. Strasser, Richard H. Wyttenbach

Naval War College Review

If military plans, policies, and programs are to be wisely formulated, an appreciation of the course that world politics will likely follow is first necessary. This paper attempts to predict the international political atmosphere in which U.S. military forces will operate during the next 15 years. In undertaking such a task we hope that an analysis of this nature may prove to be of value to those military officers engaged in making decisions having long-range implications.

Some Speculations On The Navy At The End Of The 1970'S, Frank Uhlig Jr. Jun 2018

Some Speculations On The Navy At The End Of The 1970'S, Frank Uhlig Jr.

Naval War College Review

Ours is an age of revolution, and revolutions are unpredictable. What is certain about this phenomenon is that everything touched by it will be changed, Many uncertainties lie in the possible direction and magnitude of change, however, making any speculation about the nature of the Navy at the end of the l 970's a risky undertaking, Yet, there are clues to help us. Those that bear most heavily on our future Navy are the nature and condition of the U.S. domestic scene, the general world situation, and, of course1 the main rival to the U.S. Navy-the Navy of the Soviet …

India-An Economic Failure Or A Potential Superpower, Demitri B. Shimkin, Claude V. Ricketts Jun 2018

India-An Economic Failure Or A Potential Superpower, Demitri B. Shimkin, Claude V. Ricketts

Naval War College Review

On 28 December 1968 the successful test of China's first thermonuclear weapon initiated a profound shift in world power balances. India's competent 13-day rout of Pakistan's armed forces in late 1971 marks a second stage of this realignment. This stage is perhaps even more significant than the first, particularly in its implications for the non-Western, non-Marxist, impoverished Third World.
