International Corporate Governance Practices And Their Implications On Investors, Namwandi Hamanyanga
International Corporate Governance Practices And Their Implications On Investors, Namwandi Hamanyanga
LLM Theses and Essays
Corporate governance has become a bonafide subset of company’s law that is concerned with who directs the company and for whose benefit. Its application varies in countries found in the main legal jurisdictions of common and civil law. This thesis identifies these differences by highlighting national corporate governance systems existing in Germany, Japan, United Kingdom and United States. Together, these countries represent systems adopted by several countries located on all continents. Increased cross border investment in this era of globalization has been significantly affected by these governance systems. The thesis shows the reasons why investors, multinational corporations and nations have …

Urbanisms With Japanese Culture And Its Living Style, Madoka Yuasa
Architecture Senior Theses
"The current urban Japanese houses have lost its richness closely related to its nature, landscapes, and seasonal events which their traditional architectural spaces had an important role as a part of their lives. This situation is due to rapid economic grows they followed in the process of modernization after the WWII, and the urban situation with respect to architecture in their city is complex. In this project, I would like to propose a housing system that has their traditional design aspects to incorporate five senses with nature and also complex contemporary urban situation to enhance their livings."

Competition Policy In East Asia : The Cases Of Japan, People's Republic Of China, And Hong Kong, Ping Lin
Competition Policy In East Asia : The Cases Of Japan, People's Republic Of China, And Hong Kong, Ping Lin
CAPS Working Paper Series
This paper describes and evaluates the competition policies in Japan, China, and Hong Kong. A simple framework based on the economic incentive of violations of law is used to evaluate the effectiveness of competition policy. After half a century of effort, Japan has finally established of a modern antitrust system, although its surcharge system could be further improved so as to enhance the deterrence effect of the law. China and Hong Kong (as most other East Asia countries) are at the early stage of developing an adequate and effective competition policy. Their short experiences, however, demonstrate the importance and complexity …

Temporal Variation Of Seismic B-Values Beneath Northeastern Japan Island Arc, Aimin Cao, Stephen S. Gao
Temporal Variation Of Seismic B-Values Beneath Northeastern Japan Island Arc, Aimin Cao, Stephen S. Gao
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Analysis of a high quality seismic catalog reveals that the average of seismic b-values in the crust beneath most part of northeastern Japan island arc decreased from 0.86 between 1984 and 1990, to 0.73 between 1991 and 1995. The two areas with the largest decrease are found to be in the same areas where the coupling between the North American and the Pacific plates is the highest, as suggested by a recent geodetic study. In the same time period, the annual seismic moment release increased by 10 times. In addition, there seems to be a corresponding increase in volcanic activities …
China And Strategic Culture, Andrew Scobell Dr.
China And Strategic Culture, Andrew Scobell Dr.
Monographs, Collaborative Studies, & IRPs
The author examines the impact of strategic culture on 21st century China. He contends that the People's Republic of China's security policies and its tendency to use military force are influenced not only by elite understandings of China's own strategic tradition, but also by their understandings of the strategic cultures of other states. Gaining a fuller appreciation for how Chinese strategists view the United States and Japan, our key ally in the Asia-Pacific, will better enable us to assess regional and global security issues.
Potential For Floating Offshore Wind Energy In Japanese Waters, A. R. Henderson, R. Leutz, Tomoki Fujii
Potential For Floating Offshore Wind Energy In Japanese Waters, A. R. Henderson, R. Leutz, Tomoki Fujii
Research Collection School Of Economics
The prospects for large scale commercialisation of sea-bed-mounted offshore windfarms are currently excellent, with the existing small-scale prototype windfarms currently being joined by the first large-scale parks in the shallow seas off the Danish, German, Swedish, Dutch, Belgian, British and Irish coasts. However other countries, including Japan, have much more limited regions of the shallow waters suitable for such developments and hence other concepts will also need to be utilised if offshore wind energy is also to become a major source of energy there.

Will The United States Take The Plunge Into Global Patent Law Harmonization? A Discussion Of The United States' Past, Present, And Future Harmonization Efforts., Anneliese M. Seifert
Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review
Ms. Seifert discusses the factors that shape harmonization of a global patent law system. She touches on how the philosophical differences of the United States, Japanese, and European patent systems have created difficulty in establishing a cohesive patent law system. The author then discusses international harmonization efforts such as WIPO and TRIPs and national patent law changes, such as the eighteen-month publication period created under the American Inventors Protection Act. In conclusion, the author discusses the future of patent harmonization, suggesting the need for a global, uniform method of patent interpretation for meaningful harmonization.
