Exploring The Impact Of An Online Leadership Course On Japanese Undergraduates' Conceptions Of Leadership, Ryosuke Watanabe Mar 2022

Exploring The Impact Of An Online Leadership Course On Japanese Undergraduates' Conceptions Of Leadership, Ryosuke Watanabe

Dissertations

Today’s complex problems transcend borders and require a collective and adaptive learning response. Literature suggests that, because the traditional hierarchical or positional style of leadership cannot effectively address problems we face today, leadership should take a more collaborative and systemic form. Rost (1991) characterized this new approach as the postindustrial paradigm of leadership. Unfortunately, changing the existing conception of leadership is not easy. Furthermore, assessing people’s leadership perceptions is challenging because leadership is often a tacit and latent construct. Because formal leadership education is still in its infancy in Japan, little is known about the impact of leadership education in …

Fundamental Shifts In Research, Ethics And Peer Review In The Era Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Edward Barroga, Janet B. Matanguihan

Biology Educator Scholarship

The era of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to fundamental shifts in research, ethics, and peer review including reframing of the research design, adapting methodologies to the study type, transitioning of research mechanics, changing research methodologies, overcoming data collection and standardization constraints, upholding research standards and ethics, maintaining informativeness and social value, and providing guarded peer review flexibility. Indeed, the COVID-19 crisis, despite disrupting research worldwide to an unprecedented degree, has also become a catalyst to develop strategies of adaptation to this disruption. As the COVID-19 pandemic continuous to evolve, new, cost-effective, and highly flexible research models …

Becoming Internationalized: Faculty Directors Of International Programs At Universities In Japan, Robert Joseph Schalkoff Ii Jan 2020

Becoming Internationalized: Faculty Directors Of International Programs At Universities In Japan, Robert Joseph Schalkoff Ii

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Internationalization is a key component in the strategic visions of universities worldwide. Japanese universities are no exception. The strategic internationalization or Kokusaika of universities in Japan is led at the national level by the central government. Faculty members, in particular those charged with campus internationalization, are the drivers of internationalization at the institutional level. These faculty members are highly internationalized themselves. However, little is known about how faculty members at Japanese universities become internationalized. Research on the paths they take, what factors play a role in the process of internationalization, and what influence their internationalization has on the institutions they …

Learning From The Pine And The Bamboo: Bashō As A Resource In Teaching Japanese Philosophy, Stephen C. Leach Apr 2018

Learning From The Pine And The Bamboo: Bashō As A Resource In Teaching Japanese Philosophy, Stephen C. Leach

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In American universities, even Asian Philosophy is still often taught following methods adapted from European universities of the nineteenth century. Whether or not this approach is well-suited to philosophy as it was conceived in that era, it is inadequate if the aim is to develop a deep appreciation of Japanese philosophy. To limit what we consider Japanese philosophy to only what bears a distinct resemblance to academic Western philosophy, and accordingly to approach Japanese philosophy purely theoretically, is to risk missing the greater part. Much of Japanese philosophy is applied philosophy, or in other words, what Pierre Hadot calls a …

Mapping Researcher Mobility: Measuring Research Collaboration Among Apec Economies, Ali Radloff Apr 2017

Mapping Researcher Mobility: Measuring Research Collaboration Among Apec Economies, Ali Radloff

Ali Radloff

Researcher mobility is an important form of cross-border education (CBE). It has the potential to generate significant benefits for economies as expert scholars and scientists come together to solve some of the most pressing challenges in the contemporary world. Among members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Community (APEC) researcher mobility can strengthen ties between economies and enable the minimisation of barriers to economic growth and sustainability. There are not currently any comparable or rigorous data available on researcher mobility among APEC economies. Proxy measures are needed to gain a sense of the extent to which researchers in APEC economies are collaborating …

Realizing Internationalization At Home Through English-Medium Courses At A Japanese University: Strategies To Maximize Student Learning, Yukiko Ishikura Sep 2011

Realizing Internationalization At Home Through English-Medium Courses At A Japanese University: Strategies To Maximize Student Learning, Yukiko Ishikura

Higher Learning Research Communications

In 2009, the Japanese government launched the Global 30 (G30) Project, a new initiative to internationalize universities. Selected universities had to create English-medium degree programs at undergraduate level in order to stimulate “internationalization at home.” The G30 Project represented a major shift in the focus of internationalization efforts from quantitative to qualitative outcomes. Using a case study approach, this paper investigates one G30 program and the attempts made to open up English-medium course offerings to the wider student body. It explores two related issues: level setting and student attrition. A mixed methods approach was used with data gathered from students …

Learning By Example: Standardized Testing In The Cases Of China, Korea, Japan, And Taiwan, Osman Ozturgut

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Kandel (1881–1965) is the most widely recognized leader and founder of modern comparative education. He asserted that the direction of education in democratic nations ought to be “borrowed and adjusted” within the cultural context of each nation. He further argued that, “so many of the problems in education are today common to most countries; in their solution certain common principles . . . are involved; the practical outcomes may, however, differ because of differences in tradition, in social and political principles, and in cultural standards”(Kandel, 1936, p. 401). As Kandel (1933) suggested, the problems and purposes of education have in …

Language And Care: Tensions For Japanese Teachers And Foreign Students In Japanese Schools, Mito Takeuchi, Francis Godwyll Jul 2010

Language And Care: Tensions For Japanese Teachers And Foreign Students In Japanese Schools, Mito Takeuchi, Francis Godwyll

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Current Japanese schools have maintained the homogeneous discourse, based on the majority, ethnic Japanese, embedded in the national curriculum. In addition to the homogeneous discourse, Tsuneyoshi (2003) argues that Japanese schools have an educational philosophy of egalitarianism, asserting that “all children are treated the same.” Egalitarianism in schools refers to working to provide the same materials for all students, teaching all at the same pace, and, frequently not offering additional support for particular students (Gordon, 2006). In other words, students need to share a high level of commonalities, such as a common language, a shared belief system and behavioral norms, …
