In Pursuit Of Water Justice In Jakarta, Widya Naseva Tuslian, Patricia Rinwigati, Stanislaus Sandyawan
The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies
Despite becoming a rapidly growing megacity, in some of Jakarta’s areas, particularly in the underprivileged areas, a significant portion of its citizens still lack access to adequate domestic water. For years, water privatization has been considered a major barrier to solving the issue. Jakarta’s citizens have mobilized themselves to publicly reclaim Jakarta’s water governance. One of the significant actions was filing a citizen lawsuit against the relevant state authorities, which eventually was ruled in favor of the state authorities due to procedural reasons. Using the ROLAX framework developed by Bedner and Vel, this paper tries to understand to what extent …

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
By applying the mixed research methods combining new historicism and digital humanities with AntConc-assisted distant reading techniques, this research aims to explore a reconstruction of Jakarta's history offered in From Batavia to Jakarta (1619–1999), a collection of poems by Zeffry J. Alkatiri. Results show that history can be reconstructed through the physical structure of narrative poetry represented by the dominant usage of pronoun "they" and intra-sentence conjunctions and prepositions such as "and", "in", and "the" instead of licentia poetica which can violate language rules. However, in the structural analysis, AntConc was not able to detect several linguistic aspects such …

Endangered; When Newspaper Archives Crumble, History Dies, Gerry Van Klinken
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Historians accept the death of oral sources, but expect newspaper archives in state institutions to be available for ever. Yet the majority of Indonesian newspaper titles in the National Library are today endangered. These crumbling papers are often the only copy in the world. This article frst reviews the role these archives have played in pathbreaking historical work, both Indonesian and foreign. Provincial newspapers record the chatter of a new, literate middle class that emerged in the middle of the tumultuous twentieth century. Indonesian historiography is transformed by the many surprises scholars experience when reading their lives there. When those …

This paper investigates the concept of ‘passage territories’ (Sennett, 2006), as living spaces constructed from one’s passage of movement from one separate space to another, and how it extends the discussion of interiority in contested contexts. Through observations of living spaces and the narrative accounts of dwellers’ in Kampung Pulo and Manggarai neighbourhoods of Jakarta, this study draws attention to the interiority of dispersed and layered spaces occupied by the kampungs’ dwellers. In this context, passage territories are driven by a) a limitation of space that, in turn, triggers the need to acquire more space; b) the occupation of a …

Modeling user check-in behavior provides useful insights about venues as well as the users visiting them. These insights can be used in urban planning and recommender system applications. Unlike previous works that focus on modeling distance effect on user’s choice of check-in venues, this paper studies check-in behaviors affected by two venue-related factors, namely, area attractiveness and neighborhood competitiveness. The former refers to the ability of an area with multiple venues to collectively attract checkins from users, while the latter represents the ability of a venue to compete with its neighbors in the same area for check-ins. We first embark …
