From Crypto-Muslim To Muslim Polemicist: The Self-Writing Of Aḥmad Ibn Qāsim Al-Ḥajarī, Paige Gibson
From Crypto-Muslim To Muslim Polemicist: The Self-Writing Of Aḥmad Ibn Qāsim Al-Ḥajarī, Paige Gibson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the self-writing of the Morisco writer Aḥmad ibn Qāsim al-Ḥajarī (b. 1569–1570) who fled his homeland in Spain for the Maghreb where he could live safely as a Muslim. While it may seem that the Moriscos were one static, monocultural group, studying them as individuals reveals the group’s diversity and complexity. Al-Ḥajarī is an excellent example of one Morisco writer who identifies more with the greater Muslim community than with the Iberian Moriscos. His most well-known work, Kitāb Nāṣir al-dīn, combines Arabic literary genres in order to create this self-portrait. Other Moriscos fought for their right to …

Al-Ghazali' S Views On Education Reform, Joshua Wheatley
Al-Ghazali' S Views On Education Reform, Joshua Wheatley
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghaziili" (1058-1111 CE) is best known for his development of Islamic philosophy and his embrace of Sufism, but he was also an important contributor to the theory of Islamic education. There is no shortage of scholarship on al-Ghazali"'s promotion of Sufism, his contributions to Islamic philosophy and his involvement in court politics. His position on education, however, is less well-known. Avner Giladi, an authority on the history of education in the Islamic world, has observed that in medieval Islam, education was an inseparable part of religion and politics. Therefore, it is only natural that, rather than writing …
Swine & Symphonies, Dilara Miller
Swine & Symphonies, Dilara Miller
Graduate Artistry Projects and Performances
Dilara Miller’s work critique’s and reflects on the social/cultural effects of being a Turkish-American Muslim woman in today’s society. Through referencing antiquities and how they are presented today, she identifies patterns of hierarchies that exist in human history through an eco-feminist lens. Miller’s work reflects on the role of the artist and the historical testimony we leave behind; like her Girl Birds, she seeks to record her experiences within our Anthropocene as colored by mythic and Islamic teachings. Miller pulls from historic epochs to generate a foundation from which to examine our contemporary treatment of women as related to our …

Conceptualizing An Islamic Character Education Program., Norma Nangju
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Character education, specifically faith-based character education, can provide a social, emotional, and academic benefit for students. Through this study, I wanted to take the first step: to design an Islamic character education program collaboratively with all stakeholders of the school. This study used participatory action research as a methodology. The first purpose was for administrators, teachers, parents, students, and community members at an Islamic school in Louisville, KY to collaborate to brainstorm the goals of a character education program at HIRA Institute using the Nominal Group Technique. The second purpose was, based on these goals, how can the strategies of …
The Practice Of Silence And Solitude And Its Results, Lizzie Suwala
The Practice Of Silence And Solitude And Its Results, Lizzie Suwala
Senior Honors Theses
Silence and solitude as a spiritual discipline is seen across many different worldviews including Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Humanism, and can be exercised alongside disciplines like prayer, meditation, and mindfulness. Each worldview has a unique purpose in why silence and solitude is practiced such as to commune with God, to prepare one’s heart for times of prayer, to avoid suffering, to experience revelations, and to find peace in an anxious world. Loneliness stems from unmet expectations of social interactions that lead to aversion in one’s current relationships and within themselves. Understanding the purpose of silence and solitude leads to the …
The Experience Of Religious Organizations In The Formation And Development Of The Chaplaincy Movement In Ukraine, Oleh Sokolovskyi, Vadym Sluysar, Olha Hordiichuk
The Experience Of Religious Organizations In The Formation And Development Of The Chaplaincy Movement In Ukraine, Oleh Sokolovskyi, Vadym Sluysar, Olha Hordiichuk
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The formation and development of relations between the Armed Forces of Ukraine and religious organizations, as well as the conditions and factors that influenced the formation of the institution of military chaplaincy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, were analyzed. It was determined that Russia's military aggression against Ukraine actualized the issue of urgent reform of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The modernization of the Ukrainian army required not only structural changes in the military administration, the transition to NATO standards, but also the creation of qualitatively new conditions for meeting the religious needs of Ukrainian servicemen. With the beginning …

Malaysia In 2023: Reconsolidation Under Pressure, Meredith Weiss
Political Science Faculty Scholarship
Prime minister Anwar Ibrahim steered his cobbled-together government through economic and sociocultural challenges in 2023, emerging stable but spooked. State-level elections in August sustained each party’s roster of states, but with declining margins for Anwar’s coalition. Fiscal pressures—high debt, declining revenues, rising cost of living, and a persistently weak currency—constrained room for maneuver, while state-level and societal cultural contests tested Malaysia’s multiracial, multireligious tolerance.

"No, Not Even Water": A Dei Approach To Embracing Ramadan's Richness, Essraa Nawar
Library Presentations, Posters, and Audiovisual Materials
"As Ramadan commences tomorrow, March 11, 2024, it presents a unique opportunity for both observant Muslims and those from other faiths or practices to come together in a period marked by reflection, renewal, and community. This sacred month offers a window into the discipline and devotion of fasting from dawn until dusk, underscoring values of empathy, gratitude, and solidarity with those less fortunate. For non-Muslims, it's an opportunity to learn about and respect these practices, perhaps by participating in communal Iftars, engaging in dialogue, or simply offering support and understanding to those observing the fast. By embracing the spirit of …

Insights Into The Relationship Between International And National Literature: Ahmed Shawky's Poetry As A Model, علي المومني
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
This research consists of an introduction, two chapters, and a conclusion. The introduction dealt with the importance of national literature and its role in illuminating the paths of generations to achieve freedom, and inspires hope in the hearts of those seeking to achieve it. The research also aimed to establish new concepts associated with the awakening of national consciousness, and there was no fundamental difference between awareness National and nationalist, especially in the shrines of the last century, and therefore the rooting of the concept of national literature in Egypt, from which our poet Ahmed Shawky Qareen descends, was the …

The Concept Of The Devarāja In Leadership At The Royal Palace Of Yogyakarta, Ghilman Assilmi
The Concept Of The Devarāja In Leadership At The Royal Palace Of Yogyakarta, Ghilman Assilmi
International Review of Humanities Studies
The Yogyakarta Palace is one of the Islamic sultanates that still exists in Indonesia. Even though the Yogyakarta Palace has an Islamic style and has been influenced by modernization which has penetrated aspects of state and society, the embodiment of the God-King concept from ancient Hindu eras remains embedded in the power of the king, state life, and the obedience of the surrounding community to the palace system. This paper has a problem regarding how to apply the concept of politics and power in the Yogyakarta Palace. A historical approach is used to reveal the meaning of the palace in …

It was determined that it is characterized by the use of many resources and modern media technologies. PR activity has a multi-channel nature: through print and electronic media, as well as radio and television, although Internet resources, including social networks, prevail. Somali Students In The American Elementary General Music Classroom, Alice L. Charland
Masters Theses
Education must be cognizant of the Somali culture’s inclination to classify music as a morally charged entity. It must also be careful not to forget American cultural values that have defined the music classroom. The purpose of this research was to identify Somali cultural expressions that occur in the American elementary general music classroom and to identify underlying concepts that contribute to these cultural expressions. Additionally, the research sought to bring light to the relationship between the two, so that future music educators might be inspired to create assessments and activities that better suit the needs of all learners.
Is Islam A Religion Of Peace?, Robert Greer
Is Islam A Religion Of Peace?, Robert Greer
Eleutheria: John W. Rawlings School of Divinity Academic Journal
One of the most troubling and controversial doctrines in Islam is that of jihad. Yet, in the West its meaning is unclear. Does it mean the struggle of the human soul to develop a wholesome spirituality, or is it more a struggle that results in terrorist attacks upon all who oppose Islam? Many politicians and academics in the West, along with many journalists and opinion-makers in the mainstream media insist that Islam, rightly understood, is a religion of peace. That means that Islamic jihadists who engage in wanton terrorism upon all who stand in their way are an aberration. They …
The Archaeology Of The Spiritual And Working Lives Of The Muslim Cameleers Of Western Australia In The Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries, Roger Bateman
Theses
This thesis describes the lifeways of cameleers (also identifiable as males, Muslims, Asians, ‘Afghans’) who worked in Western Australia’s transport industry in the period 1887 to 1920. With their camels’ unique capabilities in the dry and sandy terrain of Western Australia’s arid and semi-arid areas, they provided a critical service in the early mining and settlement history of Western Australia. This research has been done through the archaeological record of their campgrounds, other sites, and the historical record. The research’s four aims were to gather and compile archaeological evidence associated with the Afghans and their religious lives as Muslims; describe …
The Rise Of Isis: A Growing Threat To The World, Grace Ralstin
The Rise Of Isis: A Growing Threat To The World, Grace Ralstin
Pepperdine Policy Review
ISIS has inflicted terror onto civilians in several ways, through ransoms, kidnapping, beheadings, mass shootings, and bombings. These acts of terror are funded through the internet. They use this tool as a mechanism to spread online propaganda and radicalize people, in addition to terrorizing civilians with cyberterrorism to collect money. This analysis also compares ISIS to other terrorist organizations, specifically in their online propaganda tactics and funding. Further, it will posit policy recommendations that are aimed at helping policymakers combat online terrorist activity. The goal should be making cyberspace safer for the public and increasing challenges for terrorists to conduct …
Law, Society, And Religion: Islam And The West, Paolo Davide Farah
Law, Society, And Religion: Islam And The West, Paolo Davide Farah
Book Chapters
Law and religion are present in almost every society, where the predominance of one over the other can greatly vary, and, in some cases, they both contend for authority over the citizenry. From a historical standpoint, this resulted in a constant change in the relationship between law and religion. Globalization also had a role in this regard. In some instances, globalization exacerbates differences between religions instead of encouraging mediation; it seeks to fill the gap left by the diminishing role of religion in the West. Globalization also competes with religion; both are looking for ways to regulate conduct and push …
Aisha Bin Abu Bakr: A Discourse Analysis Of Social Media Constructions, Margaret Pierce
Aisha Bin Abu Bakr: A Discourse Analysis Of Social Media Constructions, Margaret Pierce
UVM Patrick Leahy Honors College Senior Theses
Many believe Aisha bin Abu Bakr married Muhammad, Islam’s Prophet, when she was only 6 years old. During their decade of marriage, Aisha witnessed the community of Muslims grow and strengthen under Muhammad’s leadership. After his death, she helped guide those he left in his wake. Aisha’s legacy continues to influence modern Muslims today as it did 1,400 years ago. As a critical female figure, her legacy informs gender roles and construction in Islam. This research analyzes the intersection between Aisha’s legacy and modern perspectives on gender in Islam through social media posts as my primary source material.

Unfolding Remembrance: Folding Islamic Principles Into Pondering Machines, Hind Al Saad Al-Kuwari
Unfolding Remembrance: Folding Islamic Principles Into Pondering Machines, Hind Al Saad Al-Kuwari
Theses and Dissertations
Principles of early Islamic art can be surveyed as a precursor to Western computational art. Though produced in different historical and cultural contexts, Islamic art and computational art are connected by underlying structures—arithmetic, harmony, and the concept of the Infinite.
Islamic developments in knowledge, like algebra, contributed to mathematics and mechanics—the building blocks of contemporary technology. Returning to Islam’s traditional harmony between religion and science, my creative practice constructs machines as an act of worship (ʿibadah), folding Islamic principles into the medium of computation.
Selected verses from the Quran are used as the core of each automaton (self-operating machine). Their …
A Litany For Survival: Exploring Activism, Feminism, And Collective Identity In Women's Movements In Pakistan, Nida Zehra
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Beginning from the history of women's activism and movements in Pakistan, to how differing forms of activism between the old and young generations are shaping the women's movement, this thesis sheds light on the Aurat (Woman) March in Pakistan, that first began in 2018 as an occasion to celebrate International Women's Day, that has heralded a fourth wave of feminism, began a new form of activism, and has been seen as a continuation of the women’s movement in modern-day Pakistan. My research studies its dynamics and the young Pakistani movement actors of today. It analyzes interviews of Aurat March participants …
The New Antisemitism, Edgar G. Soto
The New Antisemitism, Edgar G. Soto
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Following the Second World War, antisemitism appeared to be on a decline. Presently, however, there is an uptick in antisemitic hate crimes, worldwide. Modern-day Islamic antisemitism in particular is in large part recycled European Christian antisemitism adapted for Islamic audiences and intensified by the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict. This iteration of anti-Jewish bigotry is not the same as the “old,” but neither is it different. As will be explained, antisemitism has, throughout history, amounted to an anomaly in Islamic culture and in what may be called “normative” Islam.
Indeed, Muslims and Jews lived together amicably for centuries. In fact, within dar-al-Islam, …

Civic Values: Thematic Studies On Citizenship In Islam, Moh. Muchtarom, Abu Zarrin Bin Selamat
Jurnal Civics: Media Kajian Kewarganegaraan
Indonesia's diverse religious, tribal, cultural, and linguistic background has resulted in frequent disputes between different groups due to the lack of firmly established civic values. As the majority population, Islamic ummah holds a vital role in establishing and managing a peaceful, fair, and prosperous society. The Qur'an, being the primary source of Islamic law, contains principles and meanings of social values that laid the foundation of the first Islamic country in Medina. Therefore, it is essential for followers of Islam to explore civic values in the Qur'an that can be integrated into Indonesian civic values. However, previous research on the …

Background: Determining the potential barriers responsible for delaying access to care, and elucidating pathways to early intervention should be a priority, especially in Arab countries where mental health resources are limited. To the best of our knowledge, no previous studies have examined the relationship between religiosity, stigma and help-seeking in an Arab Muslim cultural background. Hence, we propose in the present study to test the moderating role of stigma toward mental illness in the relationship between religiosity and help-seeking attitudes among Muslim community people living in different Arab countries. Method: The current survey is part of a large-scale multinational collaborative …
