The Status Quo Bias Of Students And Reframing As An Educational Intervention Towards Entrepreneurial Thinking And Change Adoption, Stojan Debarliev, Aleksandra Janeska-Iliev, Viktorija Ilieva
Economic and Business Review
The purpose of this research study is to examine the status quo bias and reframing interventions among business students in an attempt to understand their role in the students’ entrepreneurial decision making, aiming eventually to find out whether we can affect students’ entrepreneurial thinking by using an educational intervention towards innovation and change adoption. Though these research topics have previously been examined separately and mostly in a non-entrepreneurial context, this research paper aims to integrate them into one laboratory experiment study in an educational context, considering business students at the university. The experimental study is conducted on a sample with …

Remote: Office Not Required—A Book Review, Paul Hill, Andrea Schmutz
The Journal of Extension
Remote: Office Not Required by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson offers a novel perspective into the modern workplace practice of remote work. This book provides an outline for becoming an expert in remote work, both as a leader and as a practitioner. Fried and Hansson describe tools and methods that help practitioners find success when implementing remote work and explain how to avoid common obstacles. Although drawbacks and challenges exist, the authors maintain that remote work is likely more compatible with organizations than leaders might think, maintaining that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
The Relationship Between Social Innovation And Active Mobility Public Services, Silvia Stuchi Cruz, Sonia Paulino
The Relationship Between Social Innovation And Active Mobility Public Services, Silvia Stuchi Cruz, Sonia Paulino
Journal of Law and Mobility
This article aims to discuss the relationship between social innovation and public services on active mobility. Two active mobility initiatives are considered in the city of São Paulo, and analyzed based on 11 variables that characterize social innovation. Through the mapping of recent Brazilian regulatory frameworks for active mobility and a low-carbon economy, we can propose the following relationship: the more local (municipal) the public policy, the greater its social influence and participation. However, despite the advances indicated by both experiences of active mobility analyzed (highlighting the role of organized civil society), and by the progress in the regulatory framework, …

Unplanned Obsolescence: Interpreting The Automatic Telephone Dialing System After The Smartphone Epoch, Walter Allison
Unplanned Obsolescence: Interpreting The Automatic Telephone Dialing System After The Smartphone Epoch, Walter Allison
Michigan Law Review
Technology regulations succeed or fail based upon their ability to regulate an idea. Constant innovation forces legislators to draft statutes aimed at prohibiting the idea of a device, rather than a specific device itself, because new devices with new capacities emerge every day. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) is a federal statute that imposes liability based on the idea of an automatic telephone dialing system (ATDS). But the statute’s definition of the device is ambiguous. The FCC struggles to coherently apply the definition to new technologies, and courts interpret the definition inconsistently. Federal circuit courts have split over these …
Adapting To Provide Innovative In-Person Extension Programming During A Pandemic, Brad Stokes, Elizabeth Lynn, Tiffany Belt
Adapting To Provide Innovative In-Person Extension Programming During A Pandemic, Brad Stokes, Elizabeth Lynn, Tiffany Belt
The Journal of Extension
The success of Extension programming is often predicated on in-person events, and numerous Extension programs are preplanned and scheduled well in advance of the anticipated programming date. In-person events help foster community, collaboration, and the human connection within our society. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical for Extension to be adaptive and innovative and react proactively to worldwide, nationwide, and local authorities' and health professionals' recommendations to protect clientele, staff, and volunteers. Extension educators can tailor in-person programs to align with health professionals' recommendations by using creative, innovative, and adaptive measures. We describe two such programs.

Remote Hiring Innovation During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Melanie D. Jewkes, Jonathan J. Swinton, Shannon Cromwell, David G. Schramm, Naomi Brower
The Journal of Extension
Extension's in-person hiring processes have been complicated in 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic. To prevent delays in hiring for three vacant county faculty positions, our search committee conducted remote interviews using a variety of innovative techniques, such as a live "we're hiring" webinar, an icebreaker session, and live and recorded candidate presentations. The results of our innovative efforts included a larger pool of applicants, relaxed web-based video interviews, and savings in time and expenses. These strategies could be considered as new and effective approaches and practices to hiring and interviewing in Extension as the pandemic continues and into the future.

Innovation, Corruption, And Economic Growth In Emerging Asia, Aurolipsa Das, Devi Prasad Dash, Narayan Sethi
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
In this paper, we investigate the impact of innovation and corruption on economic growth for 13 emerging Asian economies over the period of 2009 to 2018. Using global innovation and corruption indices, we show that innovation has no significant impact on growth. In contrast, corruption slows down growth in the region. Our results indicate that innovation in the region is not robust enough to attract growth and that corruption is the major hindrance to growth.

Innovation In A Legal Vacuum: The Uncertain Legal Landscape For Shared Micro-Mobility, David Pimentel, Michael B. Lowry, Timothy W. Koglin, Ronald W. Pimentel
Journal of Law and Mobility
The last few years have seen an explosion in the number and size shared micro-mobility systems (“SMMS”) across the United States. Some of these systems have seen extraordinary success and the potential benefit of these systems to communities is considerable. However, SMMS have repeatedly ran into legal barriers that either prevent their implementation entirely, confuse and dissuade potential users, or otherwise limit SMMS’s potential positive impact.
This paper reflects a detailed study of state laws relating to SMMS and the platforms commonly used in these systems. The study uncovered many inconsistencies with micro-mobility laws across the country. Currently, many states …

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
In the first part of this paper, we provide an example of a project designed to foster mathematical creativity among students at an independent, all-girls school in the Northeast United States. The mathematical motivator for the project is a polyomino proof by induction first formulated by Solomon Golomb. We explain how the project has been implemented over the past two years at the school’s Innovation Lab in collaborative work between a mathematics instructor and an educational technologist, provide instructions and background information to facilitate the implementation of this project at other learning sites, and show examples of student work along …
Risk Taking And Rights Balancing In Intellectual Property Law, Clark D. Asay
Risk Taking And Rights Balancing In Intellectual Property Law, Clark D. Asay
Akron Law Review
Scholars have long worried that risk aversion can have significant negative effects in the marketplace. In the intellectual property law domain, some have worried that risk-averse actors can negatively influence the development of important intellectual property law doctrines, which can ultimately hamper innovation. For instance, risk-averse actors may frequently choose to obtain licenses for rights that the relevant laws do not actually require of them. When they do so, they inadvertently increase the scope of intellectual property rights because their risk-averse activities inform courts’ development of key intellectual property law doctrines.
In this Article, prepared as part of the IP …

Twenty-First-Century Innovation Pathways For The U.S. Navy In The Age Of Competition, James A. Russell
Naval War College Review
Recent programs such as the littoral combat ship, the Zumwalt-class guided-missile destroyer, and the Ford-class aircraft carrier all have highlighted the Navy’s failure to produce innovative, afford-able ships in the quantity and of the quality needed to configure a larger, redesigned fleet. Unless the Navy can address mistakes made in these programs it will have difficulty innovating success-fully—with potentially disastrous consequences.

Supporting Professional Development Through Digital Principal Leadership, William Sterrett, Jayson W. Richardson
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
A core role of the K-12 school leader is to support and nurther the growth of others. That growth is commonly thought to be at the student level. However, school leaders must also focus on the growth of their teachers. School leaders are adjusting to a world where technology has crept into many aspects of the profession. And sometimes, technology innovation comes during a time of sudden disruption, such as the COVID-19 pandemic in Spring 2020 where digital learning and leadership become the new norm, even when uncertainty and change were omnipresent. As such, while it is clear that principals …
Modern Privacy Advocacy: An Approach At War With Privacy Itself?, Justin "Gus" Hurwitz, Jamil N. Jaffer
Modern Privacy Advocacy: An Approach At War With Privacy Itself?, Justin "Gus" Hurwitz, Jamil N. Jaffer
Pepperdine Law Review
This Article argues that the modern concept of privacy itself, particularly as framed by some of its most ardent advocates today, is fundamentally incoherent. The Article highlights that many common arguments made in support of privacy, while initially seeming to protect this critical value, nonetheless undermine it in the long run. Using both recent and older examples of applying classic privacy advocacy positions to key technological innovations, the authors demonstrate how these positions, while seemingly privacy-enhancing at the time, actually resulted in outcomes that were less beneficial for consumers and citizens, including from a purely privacy-focused perspective. As a result, …

Subsidiarity & Innovation During The Pandemic, Timothy D. Uhl
Journal of Catholic Education
As the pandemic has unfolded, schools have been faced with challenges in finance, human resources, and curriculum, to name only a few. A system founded on subsidiarity provides an uneven capacity for each school. A system founded on allowing each school to make its own decisions has provided uneven results.

The Role Of Foreignness In The Relationship Between Disruptive Innovation And Mne Performance, Chuandi Jiang, Xing Zhao
The Role Of Foreignness In The Relationship Between Disruptive Innovation And Mne Performance, Chuandi Jiang, Xing Zhao
American Business Review
The innovation-performance literature has failed to make a distinction between the effects of incremental and disruptive innovation on multinational enterprise (MNE) performance. The understanding of the role of foreignness has overemphasized the negative side. From the institutional anomie theory perspective, this study investigates how foreignness, which consists of national culture, industrial competition, and innovative national capacity, affects the relationship between disruptive innovation and MNE performance. We illustrate the distinctiveness between incremental and disruptive innovation and then build a conceptual model to show the moderating role of foreignness on the innovation-performance link. The model suggests that foreignness provides contextual conditions under …

The Essential Nature Of Experience In A Time Of Crisis And Beyond, Jason A. Wolf
Patient Experience Journal
As we have engaged with community members around the world, the last few weeks have provided a unique window into the face of this crisis as we have seen not only the deadliest days on record, but have also had some of the most hopeful conversations at the same time. While we are and still will face challenges in the weeks to come, we too have seen humanity elevated in profound and powerful ways. While it can be offered with little argument that things will never be the same, in moving forward, we too can assert and I believe, that …

Emphasis On Role Of Technology Sciences In Supply Side Reform Of Science And Technology Innovation, Yang Zhongkai, Liang Yongxia, Liu Zeyuan
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The concept of technology sciences was proposed by Mr. Tsien Hsue-shen. It occupies a middle position in the chain of basic science and engineering technology innovation and plays a bridging role. For a long time, the concept of technology sciences has been rarely mentioned in China's science and technology policy making process, which to a certain extent has led China's science and technology policy to either favor the basic research or the engineering and technology, which is not conducive to the output of major scientific and technological innovations. It can also lead to the occurrence of the "neck jam" phenomenon. …
The Replicability Crisis In Patent Law, Janet Freilich
The Replicability Crisis In Patent Law, Janet Freilich
Indiana Law Journal
There is a “replicability crisis” in the scientific literature. Scientists attempting to redo experiments in reputable, peer-reviewed journals have found that staggering numbers of these experiments—up to 90%—do not work. Patents, like scientific articles, contain experiments. These experiments often form the backbone of the patent and provide crucial support for patentability. Patent examiners use these experiments to evaluate whether the invention works, and thus whether the patent should be granted. The replicability crisis in the scientific literature is therefore of utmost importance to the patent system. Transferring the insights of the replicability crisis to patents begs the question of whether …

Open Access Textbooks In A Professional Communication Classroom: A Pilot Study, Sherena Huntsman, Avery C. Edenfield, Erin L. Davis
Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence
In this paper, we share our findings from a curricular innovation project: a small pilot study replacing a conventional professional communication textbook with an open access book. Results showed that students received the change favorably and a final grade comparison showed no variation between similar courses that used conventional books and those that used open access books. While far from definitive, this study demonstrates the promise of open access books and open educational resources (OER), and that further study is needed in this area.
