The Millennial Novel: Examining A Generation Through Literature, Isabella Bokan May 2024

The Millennial Novel: Examining A Generation Through Literature, Isabella Bokan

English Honors Theses

This undergraduate thesis examines the relationship between contemporary social circumstances and fiction novels. Generational novels are focused on cohorts or individuals who share traits that reflect recognizable social conditions of a specific era. The new generational novel is the Millennial novel. These Millennial novels generally depict American characters in American settings, but the characters are increasingly ethnically and racially diverse. These characters are often in economic precarity, they are generally highly educated and invariably find themselves at odds with traditional romantic, occupational, and domestic expectations. In many of these novels, new technologies play an important role in the narrative and …

The Decline In Attendance At Local Churches In Queens, New York: A Biblically Based Strategic Revitalization Plan To Bring Local Churches Back To Spiritual Health, Marilyn A. Dolloway Jun 2023

The Decline In Attendance At Local Churches In Queens, New York: A Biblically Based Strategic Revitalization Plan To Bring Local Churches Back To Spiritual Health, Marilyn A. Dolloway

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The decline in church attendance is not a new phenomenon. Historical evidence shows that God has intervened to revitalize and restore the church to a healthy state. Unfortunately, attendance at churches in contemporary times worldwide has declined, as congregations at approximately ninety percent of churches have shrunk. This trend is evident in the United States, where upwards of fifty congregations close their doors permanently each week, resulting in an annual attendance decline of one to two percent. The decline is remarkable in the New York borough of Queens. Churches have been declining for decades, with only fifteen to twenty-five members …

Molar Macrowear As A Proxy For Age In A Captive Sample Of Papio Hamadryas, Lauren Conrad May 2023

Molar Macrowear As A Proxy For Age In A Captive Sample Of Papio Hamadryas, Lauren Conrad

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

This study is methods-focused, centering around molar crown macrowear and its performance as a proxy for age in a sample of pedigreed, non-human primates. It analyzes the correlation between age-structured variables and molar wear among both males and females in a captive group of baboons. Here, I examined whether wear is significantly correlated with age-related variables (i.e., generations/cohorts) and whether the structure of the “age” dataset differed across wear categories. Because chronological age is unknown, I used documented pedigrees and parent-offspring relationships to group individuals into possible generations. I then used dental development charts to group individuals into cohorts based …

The tools used to both create and integrate these features were created in Houdini with Unreal Engine 5 as the intended final destination. This study aimed to address common challenges with generational research and assist in distinguishing between truly valid and simply popular information. This study’s purpose was to identify differences in values between members of major generational cohorts and individuals in microgenerations …

Companies that want to attract top talent are making DEI a priority. Are Generational Attitudes Toward Digital Marketing Technology Exhibited In Automobile Purchase Behaviors?, Scott Whitaker

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

This dissertation was focused on the current digital purchasing trend in the used automotive industry in order to understand which factors impacted the growth of this trend through the lens of generational cohort theory. The growth of consumer informedness in the automotive sector has created drastic changes in how consumers are able, and willing, to purchase vehicles. Used car dealerships who adopt successful internet marketing techniques can capture and engage potential customers and then convert that engagement into sales. Companies like Carvana, Vroom, and CarMax have seized this opportunity and created a digital marketing phenomenon with major impacts on consumer …

Muse: A Genetic Algorithm For Musical Chord Progression Generation, Griffin Going Dec 2022

Muse: A Genetic Algorithm For Musical Chord Progression Generation, Griffin Going

Culminating Experience Projects

Foundational to our understanding and enjoyment of music is the intersection of harmony and movement. This intersection manifests as chord progressions which themselves underscore the rhythm and melody of a piece. In musical compositions, these progressions often follow a set of rules and patterns which are themselves frequently broken for the sake of novelty. In this work, we developed a genetic algorithm which learns these rules and patterns (and how to break them) from a dataset of 890 songs from various periods of the Billboard Top 100 rankings. The algorithm learned to generate increasingly valid, yet interesting chord progressions via …

Findings were fourfold: 1) participants chose between following established and creating new rules when code-switching; 2) participants shared experiences and strategies regarding knowing when and how to code-switch; 3) preparing audiences for …

The Netherlands-Indies; Rethinking Post-Colonial Recognition From A Multi-Voiced Perspective, Nicole L. Immler Oct 2022

The Netherlands-Indies; Rethinking Post-Colonial Recognition From A Multi-Voiced Perspective, Nicole L. Immler

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In the communication of pain, language matters. Telling someone to feel pain is not just a description of one’s pain, it is – as philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein informs us – also asking for recognition of that pain. This requires a shared language which communicates it. Do we need a new language which can communicate and recognize the pain of the colonial past more effectively? Commencing with the recent apology for waging a colonial warin Indonesia by the Dutch prime minister, this article suggests an intervention in post-colonial recognition politics by exploring the idea of the multi-voicedness. Multi-voicedness …

Thereby Hangs A Tail: Creation And Procreation In Medieval Werewolf Romances, Vicki Blud Jan 2022

Thereby Hangs A Tail: Creation And Procreation In Medieval Werewolf Romances, Vicki Blud

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

How do you make a werewolf? Moreover, who makes a werewolf, and why? In medieval romance, the latter questions are often the more pressing, since the transformation of man into wolf is connected less with lunar phases than with human interference—especially the intervention of an unfaithful wife. Following in the pawprints of Marie de France’s lai of Bisclavret, these romances are noted for their “courtly” wolves and antifeminist slant, but they also offer unusual perspectives on procreation. While in Aristotelian thought the generative principle was broadly associated with the male partner, the male werewolf of medieval romance is most often …

Insurer Accountability In The Next Generation Of Health Reform, Katie Keith Jan 2022

Insurer Accountability In The Next Generation Of Health Reform, Katie Keith

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

Democrats continue to debate how to extend health insurance coverage to the remaining uninsured and improve the affordability and quality of coverage and care. Prior intraparty debates—over whether to build upon the Affordable Care Act, create a public option, or expand the Medicare program to all (or more)—have centered on how to best accomplish these goals and whether health care delivery should be mediated through public versus private payers. These are worthwhile debates, but the history of health reform suggests that private health insurers are here to stay. This Article accepts the premise that future coverage expansions will likely rely …
