Two Essays In Fertilizer Management For Improved Profitability, Shelby Dawn Wade Jan 2019

Two Essays In Fertilizer Management For Improved Profitability, Shelby Dawn Wade

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

Corn production in the United States has become increasingly efficient over the years. The use of nitrogen fertilizers has played a substantial role in this efficiency. Nitrogen drives biomass production which leads to increased yields. Unlike other nutrients, nitrogen is more mobile making it easier to lose through leaching and volatilization. The first part of this analysis uses an econometric model to examine the relationship between nitrogen usage and weather data. This relationship leads to farm management decisions to reduce nitrogen fertilization expenses. In addition to the use of nitrogen fertilizers, farmers in Kentucky take advantage of an abundance of …

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

This project was designed to evaluate the effect of ruminant grazing practices at Hickory Hill Farm on the surrounding environment by measuring soil nutrients and runoff chemistry. Three pastures on the farm (Goat, Cattle and Control) were selected for soil sampling and nutrient analyses were recorded. Physical water quality parameters were conducted on the runoff collected from the farm after Hurricane Sandy. The sites with animal activity had higher levels of sulfate, phosphate, nitrate, Mehlich 3 phosphorus and conductivity when compared to control site. However, the control site had slightly higher pH and chloride levels. Nitrogen and phosphorous levels were …

Whole Farm Modeling Of Precision Agriculture Technologies, Jordan Murphy Shockley Jan 2010

Whole Farm Modeling Of Precision Agriculture Technologies, Jordan Murphy Shockley

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation investigated farm management concerns faced by grain producers due to the acquisition of various precision agriculture technologies. The technologies evaluated in the three manuscripts included 1) auto-steer navigation, 2) automatic section control, and 3) autonomous machinery. Each manuscript utilized a multifaceted economic model in a whole-farm decision-making framework to determine the impact of precision agriculture technology on machinery management, production management, and risk management. This approach allowed for a thorough investigation into various precision agriculture technologies which helped address the relative dearth of economic studies of precision agriculture and farm management. Moreover, the research conducted on the above …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this research is to provide quantitative and limited qualitative analysis for the United States Intermountain West on the economic effectiveness of risk management alternatives in an agricultural operation. This research is not meant to be an exhaustive comparison of every potential combination of alternatives and risk scenarios. Instead, specific parameters such as farm size, crops grown, risk attitudes and risk management strategies are set to guide the research and offer a basis of comparison.

This research evaluates several levels of coverage using Multiple Peril Crop Insurance, Crop Revenue Coverage Insurance, Adjusted Gross Revenue – Lite Insurance and …

The Rfid-Enabled Dairy Farm: Towards Total Farm Management, Adam Trevarthen, Katina Michael Apr 2008

The Rfid-Enabled Dairy Farm: Towards Total Farm Management, Adam Trevarthen, Katina Michael

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is currently being deployed in government mandated livestock identification schemes across the world. RFID in its basic function can help authorities identify animals, especially when traceability becomes paramount during disease outbreaks across regions. This paper provides a view of how an RFID-enabled dairy farm can leverage mobile network infrastructure towards achieving total farm management. The data for the study was collected from two case studies, both NLIS (national livestock identification system) compliant dairy farms on the South Coast of New South Wales in Australia. The Cochrane and Strong Farms were used as models to illustrate the core …

Animal health is not sold in a bottle, syringe or sack. It comes as a result of proper management. The increased concentration and movement of cattle and demands for greater production necessitate an improved level of management to maintain cattle health.

The Costs And Benefits Of Soil Erosion Control In The North Lake Chicot Watershed, Robert N. Shulstad, C. Tim Osborn, Alan D. Mcqueen Mar 1983

The Costs And Benefits Of Soil Erosion Control In The North Lake Chicot Watershed, Robert N. Shulstad, C. Tim Osborn, Alan D. Mcqueen

Technical Reports

Lake Chicot is divided by a levee into two basins, the high quality northern basin and the extremely polluted southern basin. Water quality in the northern basin of Lake Chicot is diminishing due to soil erosion. Costs for alternative control programs for the seventeen fare, 11,470 acre northern watershed were estimated. Twenty-nine combinations of rotations and best management practices were evaluated. Soil loss can be reduced almost 25 percent from 4.2 tons per acre to 3.2 tons per acre, while increasing net returns to farmers from $83.94 per acre to $107.28 per acre by altering present cropping patterns. A prohibition …

An Application Of Statistical Decision Theory To Farm Management In Sevier County, Utah, Suwaphot Lakawathana May 1970

An Application Of Statistical Decision Theory To Farm Management In Sevier County, Utah, Suwaphot Lakawathana

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The major purpose of this study is to present selected empirical results of a study employing decision-making theory as a framework for considering decision making under risk. The particular problem involves choices between alternative crop rotations for Sevier County farmers. The study demonstrates the usefulness of the Bayesian theory that gives more than a point estimation.

A multiple regression model using two linear terms was employed to determine the influence of snow pack and reservoir storage on water availability for irrigation purposes during July, August, and September.

The Bayesian approach was employed. The optimal action or decision was first determined …

An Economic Study Of Farms In The Spring Wheat Area Of South Dakota, C. M. Hampson, P. Christophersen May 1934

An Economic Study Of Farms In The Spring Wheat Area Of South Dakota, C. M. Hampson, P. Christophersen

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars

This is the first of a series of three circulars being published as progress reports of a five year study which was begun in 1930, on the economics of agriculture in the Spring Wheat Area of South Dakota. The study was started as a modified cost route in Potter County with 48 farmer cooperators keeping records, some of which were quite complete in that labor and feed records were also kept. During the first year a representative of the college lived at Gettysburg and visited the cooperators at least once each month to check on the completeness of the records …

Estimated Returns From Farms Of Large, Medium And Small Size Of Business In The Spring Wheat Areas Of South Dakota, C. M. Hampson, P. Christophersen May 1934

Estimated Returns From Farms Of Large, Medium And Small Size Of Business In The Spring Wheat Areas Of South Dakota, C. M. Hampson, P. Christophersen

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars

Size of farm business is recognized by all farm management investigators and by many farmers as one of the most important factors making for success or failure in farming. A moderately large size of business, doubtless is more profitable in so-called normal times than is a small sized business. Size of business in this circular is not measured in acres only, as is common in certain sections where most of the land is fertile and tillable, and most of the farms are of the same type. Size of business cannot be measured accurately, nor by a single descriptive term such …

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars

Purpose of Study.-This circular dealing with conditions in Clark County is part of a larger research project involving also a study of the farm mortgage situation in the counties of Brookings, Hyde, Haakon and Turner. Ever since the post-war deflation began in 1920 the farm credit problem has been more or less acute. This is an inevitable result of falling prices after a period of inflation such as that brought on by the World War. Because the bulk of the farm credit is based on real estate mortgages it has seemed particularly appropriate and timely to try to determine at …

Emergency Farm Adjustments In The Wheat Area Of South Dakota, R. S. Kifer, P. Christophersen, S. E. Johnson Jan 1933

Emergency Farm Adjustments In The Wheat Area Of South Dakota, R. S. Kifer, P. Christophersen, S. E. Johnson

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars

Summary
This circular tells briefly the story of some farmers in the Spring Wheat section of South Dakota. It shows the strenuous effort being made by these men to reduce expenses or to shift their production so that their income will equal their expenses.
It illustrates certain adjustments that are being followed on some of the farms and suggests some changes that might be profitable on these and other farms.
The most serious difficulty arises from the effort to pay the fixed charges-interest, taxes, and payments on indebtedness. On nearly all farms some adjustments are being made to obtain a …

Farm Mortgage Experience Of Life Insurance Companies Lending In South Dakota, H. A. Steele Dec 1932

Farm Mortgage Experience Of Life Insurance Companies Lending In South Dakota, H. A. Steele

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars

Life insurance funds play an important part in supplying farm mortgage credit. This source of credit has increased rapidly during the last twenty years and is now one of the principal sources of farm mortgage loans in the United States. The life insurance companies have found an important outlet for their funds in South Dakota; approximately five per cent of their total farm mortgage loans on December 31, 1931 had been made in this state.' Because of the nature of the institution of life insurance, its investments should be conservative. It is with this view in mind that the state …
