Implementation Of An Education Program To Decrease Inpatient Falls, Elizabeth M. Carpenter, Jewyl Gibson
Graduate Publications and Other Selected Works - Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
BACKGROUND: Inpatient falls are affecting 1 million patients across the United States every year with 25% of fall resulting in injury. Approximately 25% of falls are preventable with accurate assessment and appropriate fall precaution interventions. According to the literature, obtaining an accurate fall risk assessment is the first step in inpatient fall prevention.
LOCAL PROBLEM: Patient falls increased on 2 cardiac stepdown units in a level III trauma center in Knoxville, Tennessee. From 2020- 2022, the combined units experienced a 48% increase in patient falls. Nursing leadership identified staff knowledge deficits and inaccurate scoring of fall assessments as primary contributors …

Camera Assisted Monitoring Device As A Tool To Reduce Falls In Inpatient Adults: An Integrative Review, Pamela Oriaifo
Camera Assisted Monitoring Device As A Tool To Reduce Falls In Inpatient Adults: An Integrative Review, Pamela Oriaifo
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Background: Adult inpatient falls remain a significant challenge in many hospitals, resulting in poor quality of life and severe financial burden. There have been tremendous efforts to curb the number of falls ranging from environmental modification, clinician education, review of medications, and use of assistive devices. One such assistive device is the use of camera monitoring systems. This systemic review scopes camera/video-assisted fall prevention programs in hospitals. It was hypothesized that camera/video-assisted fall prevention programs would reduce adult inpatient fall and costs significantly. The outcomes of camera or video-assisted fall prevention programs were considered in some hospital settings. Method: The …

Impact Of Fall Education To Nursing Staff On Oncology Patient Fall Rates, Danni Nina Sloane
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Falls and fall-related injuries impact patients' health outcomes and are the most commonly reported adverse event in hospitals for patients over 65 years of age. This scholarly project was conducted to evaluate the effect of evidence-based education to the Registered Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistance in the medical and surgical oncology inpatient on reducing the number of patients falling. Retrospective reviews of patient fall rates, were conducted two months before the fall educational sessions, and prospective reviews were conducted after implementing fall education. Patient falls also affect reimbursement rates and, on average, increase a patient’s length of stay by about …
The Fall And Natural Suffering, Andrew Banacos
The Fall And Natural Suffering, Andrew Banacos
Obsculta
Evolutionary theory poses several questions for Christian notions of origins: 1) common ancestry of all creatures rather than monogenesis; 2) the violent history of evolution as a challenge to the notion of a fall from paradise into sin, death, and suffering; and 3) the relationship between suffering and evil in light of evolutionary process. This paper seeks to address the concept of the fall in the context of dialogue between evolution and the Christian faith.

Managing Recurrent Delayed Pleural Effusion Post Rib Fracture In An Elderly Female, Yaseen Ramadan, Fnu Swatisikta, Mushfeka Baker Golawala
East Florida Division GME Research Day 2023
INTRODUCTION Delayed pleural effusion (DPL) post rib fracture is a lesser known and not adequately studied entity. DPL is associated with increased hospital/ICU length of stay (LOS) and poorer disposition at discharge. Some case series have reported incidence as high as 40.8 % making it a clinically significant complication to watch for.
CASE An elderly female presented to the ED after a mechanical fall leading to right side fractured ribs (5th to 9th rib posteriorly) and pneumothorax. Patient was hypoxic in ER and an ICD was placed. Trauma series showed right pulmonary contusion but no hemothorax or any other injury. …

Inter-Step Height Variation Of Stairways And Observations Of Fall-Related Events, Chayston B. Brown, Shandon Poulsen, Chris Dakin, Sara Harper, Tyson Barrett
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
INTRODUCTION: Variation in step height within a stairway could negatively impact safe stairway negotiation by decreasing step height predictability, and consequently, increasing stair users’ fall risk. Unfortunately, inter-stairway step height variability is common, particularly in older stairways, but its impact may be lessened by highlighting steps’ edges using high-contrast stripes on the top front edge of each step. Such contrast enhancement may draw greater attention to the steps’ edges and potentially enhance the precision of the edge’s estimated location. PURPOSE: To determine (1) if fall-related events are associated with greater inter-step height variation, and (2) if such fall-related events are …

Judicial Ethics In The Confluence Of National Security And Political Ideology: William Howard Taft And The “Teapot Dome” Oil Scandal As A Case Study For The Post-Trump Era, Joshua E. Kastenberg
St. Mary's Law Journal
Political scandal arose from almost the outset of President Warren G. Harding’s administration. The scandal included corruption in the Veterans’ Administration, in the Alien Property Custodian, but most importantly, in the executive branch’s oversight of the Navy’s ability to supply fuel to itself. The scandal reached the Court in three appeals arising from the transfer of naval petroleum management from the Department of the Navy to the Department of the Interior. Two of the appeals arose from President Coolidge’s decision to rescind oil leases to two companies that had funneled monies to the Secretary of the Interior. A third appeal …

Patient falls are unfortunate events in healthcare that are an essential quality improvement focus during patients’ hospital stays. At Hospital X, a private institution located in the suburbs of a large city, there had been 23 maternal falls within the last three years. This increase in maternal fall rate puts this hospital’s maternity unit above the average of other hospital’s fall rates according to the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators. This quality improvement project aimed to reduce the rate of maternal falls on postpartum units through various forms of staff education. Education included Morse Fall Scale scoring, Sara Stedy …

Hourly Rounding To Reduce Patient Falls - A Quality Improvement Project, Shelley L. Lloyd
Hourly Rounding To Reduce Patient Falls - A Quality Improvement Project, Shelley L. Lloyd
MSN Capstone Projects
Patient falls are devastating. They can result in injury and even death. They also result in extra costs for the patient as well as they facility. Hourly rounding is a simple process that can help reduce the number of patient falls within an acute care facility. Purposeful hourly rounding will help meet the needs of the patient as well as allow the staff member to asses the environment for safety issues. Rounding should happen every hour during the day and every two hours at night. During these rounds, staff will ask the patient about pain, bathroom needs, comfort, peacefulness of …
