When Urban Education Meets Community Activism: A Case Of Student Empowerment In New Orleans, Lisa Richardson
When Urban Education Meets Community Activism: A Case Of Student Empowerment In New Orleans, Lisa Richardson
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This is an ethnographic study of urban education and community development in the city of New Orleans. In New Orleans, as in all American cities, the public schools are at the center of local politics and the policies that affect community life. Institutions of public education have come under fire for failing to prepare youth to compete in the global economy. This is particularly true in urban communities, where schools serve a higher proportion of students of color facing greater incidences of poverty, underemployment and economic distress. As education policymakers and business leaders look to improve education, many of the …

Fair Use Guidelines For Educational Multimedia, Aziza Ellozy
Faculty Journal Articles
Faculty at AUC are facing questions that many educators in the US and around the world are facing: What guidelines are there for the production of multimedia materials? Under what conditions can we introduce video and audio clips, digitize images and text for educational purposes? How do we take advantage of innovative instructional technologies and changing educational needs without running the risk of violating the copyright law?

More Thoughts On Plagiarism From A Colleague, Aziza Ellozy
Faculty Journal Articles
The subject matter of our last issue, “The New Plagiarism”, generated a lot of feedback from faculty, and is obviously a high priority on many of our colleagues’ minds. Following are excerpts from a memo circulated by Ms. Cynthia Sheikholeslami, an ELI teacher, to her colleagues in the ELI, which she passed on to me. The issues that she raises address another important aspect of the problem, namely our own responsibilities as faculty.

Relationship Between Self-Perception Of Individuals With Learning Disabilities And Coping Strategies, Nicholas Frantz Pontius
Theses & Honors Papers
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between one's understanding of his/her own learning disability (LO) and coping strategies he/she employs to mitigate the effect of the disability. The subjects (N = 120) of this study were students with learning disabilities who attended and graduated from a private school in Richmond, Virginia between 1976 and 1997. A self-developed questionnaire with two parts was used to collect data for this study. The data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Of the 120 surveys mailed, 55 (45.8%) subjects responded. Hypothesis regarding relationship between knowledge and coping strategies …

The Experiences Of First-Year School Counselors From Novice To Expert, Anne E. Luther
The Experiences Of First-Year School Counselors From Novice To Expert, Anne E. Luther
Student Work
This study described the common lived experience of 10 first year school counselors. This study explored the experiences within four areas: relationships with staff and students, graduate program training, skills implementation, and relationships with building and district administration. The phenomenology relied on an initial structured interview after eight weeks on the job as the main data source. Other data sources included participant journal entries, non-participant observations, veteran counselor contact logs, and a follow-up interview at the end of the school year. The data triangulation and constant comparative analysis resulted in common themes that described the essence of the common lived …

The Effects Of Interdisciplinary Team Size On Student Achievement, Behavior, Attendance, And Student Perceptions About Community, James Vernon Sutfin
Student Work
This study explored the impact of interdisciplinary team size on student achievement, behavior, attendance, and perceptions about community in an affluent Midwestern suburban middle school. Interdisciplinary teams were divided up in to three-, four- and five-teacher configurations. Data were gathered through the use of the district's School Information and Management System (SIMS) as well as the School Ethical Climate Index (SECI) (Schulte et al., 2002). The dependent variables were (a) academic achievement, (b) student behavior, (c) student attendance, and (d) student perceptions about community. Independent variables were the interdisciplinary team and grade level. All four research questions were answered using …

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)
Within the context of an AUTC funded Project: Information and Communication Technologies and Their Role in Flexible Learning, this paper presents an analysis of learning designs using ICTs and how this grounded approach might be a more useful structure to design effective learning environments. The project has developed generic or reusable frameworks for technology-enhanced high quality learning experiences in higher education and this paper will present several examples, of the original design and how the key elements were selected and developed for use by others. As this project is currently developing these generic exemplars of learning designs, the final presentation …

The New Plagiarism, Aziza Ellozy
Faculty Journal Articles
As a “newcomer” to AUC, I attended this year’s Newcomer’s Orientation program, where plagiarism and cheating were discussed at length in one of the sessions. Although plagiarism is not new, it is apparently on the rise, and is a topic of great concern not only here at AUC, but at institutions of higher learning in the US and the UK among others.

Critical thinking theory has its roots in the works of Benjamin Bloom, a psychologist at the University of Chicago. Bloom (1956) categorized thinking into six processes. Bloom’s Taxonomy, as it is called, is one of the most influential critical thinking models and continues to be as applicable today as it did then.

Differences In Achievement Between Graded And Nongraded Elementary School Students, Amanda M. Arkfeld
Differences In Achievement Between Graded And Nongraded Elementary School Students, Amanda M. Arkfeld
Student Work
Nongraded schools have recently regained popularity. A variety of researchers have compared student achievement levels between nongraded and traditional graded programs to determine efficacy, however results have been inconsistent. The current researcher further examined achievement differences between nongraded and graded classrooms through replication and extension of a previous study performed by Kelly-Vance, and Ruane (2000), in order to contribute additional research in an area lacking in consistent support. Students were recruited from two schools (i.e., Schools A and B) containing comparable percentages of students receiving free or reduced-cost lunch. Students from School A served as a graded control group, while …

If there is one feature that distinguishes an AUC education from that of all other institutions in the region, it is that ours is a Liberal Arts education. As faculty, we recognize that critical thinking figures prominently at the core of a liberal arts education, and that our goal is to change our students from being passive receptors of information to being “critical thinkers”.
