Art Teaching For Peace And Justice, Kristin G. Congdon
Art Teaching For Peace And Justice, Kristin G. Congdon
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The social goals of peace and justice are not removed from art processes and products, and especially not from curricula in art classrooms. In this article, six topic areas are suggested for the art educator which further the causes of peace and justice: 1) Appreciating diversity; 2) Understanding that art creates individual and group identity; 3) Encouraging collaboration in art processes; 4) Working respectfully with the earth's ecosystems; 5) Analyzing art which deals specifically with war and violence; and 6) Promoting peace and justice through art.
Visibility And Invisibility In Art And Craft, Fiona Blaikie
Visibility And Invisibility In Art And Craft, Fiona Blaikie
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The visibility and invisibility or censorship of art and craft is determined by individual and group ontologies. Their production has often been constricted and/or defined by gender, class, culture, race, religion, and politics. In this paper, I am concerned with the visibility of varieties of art, design, and craft. I will examine censorship based on three criteria; gender, culture, and class, with the censorship of artwork because of gender being the dominant theme.
The Development Of An Instrument To Measure Global-Mindedness, E. Jane Hett Edd
The Development Of An Instrument To Measure Global-Mindedness, E. Jane Hett Edd
Dissertations
The leaders of the twenty-first century will need remarkable insight into other cultures and peoples and unprecedented concern for the well-being of the world community. The generally stated goal of global education in the United States is to foster a sense of global belonging through lessening ethnocentrism, increasing knowledge of other cultures, and promoting a concern for the global ecosystem. Despite the resources dedicated to this end, only limited research has been done to assess the effectiveness of programs designed to foster global-mindedness. Global-Mindedness, as the definition emerged through the qualitative component of this research, is a worldview in which …

The composition of the work force in this country is changing from one in which the White male was dominant to one in which by the year 2000 women and ethnic minorities will be dominant. Work force diversity will impact organizations at all levels, including top management, which has been closed to women and minorities, and in particular, minority women. The diverse work force's expectation for advancement into top levels of management will present challenges to organizations. Some organizations have recognized that to remain competitive they need to manage a more diverse work force. The purpose of this study is …

Teaching Laws With Flaws: Adopting A Pluralistic Approach To Torts, Taunya Lovell Banks
Missouri Law Review
It is important to say at the outset that this discussion about one case, O'Brien v. Cunard Steamship Co.1, would not have been as rich without access to the pleadings and trial record in the case. Too often we teach law courses as perspectiveless, adopting an analytical approach that consciously acknowledges no specific cultural, political, or class characteristics, but which is decidedly male, white and elitist. Today's law school classroom is more diverse both as to gender, race, and class, than ten or twenty years ago. This more diverse student body enters law school with life experiences and perspectives not …

The growing diversity of the work force is having and will continue to have a significant impact on organizations. The diversity of cultures, lifestyles, and household compositions compels managers and organizational leaders to make a variety of organizational changes. Additionally, the globalization of business, the integration of the world economy, and the rapid changes in corporate life require a reexamination of how organizations are thought of, and how employees are managed (Copeland, 1988; Betters-Reed & Moore, 1988-89; Goldstein, 1988). Since in the past organizations have been based on white male European traditions, a revolutionary response is needed from organizational leaders …

Compelled To Speak: Women Confronting Institutional Racism, 1910-1950, Sharlene Voogd Cochrane
New England Journal of Public Policy
Women within and outside the YWCA have been able to move this organization to confront its own racism. Although the strategies and goals for this endeavor took several decades to work out, the organization moved more quickly than other similar institutions. One reason for this movement was the power of women speaking out in an institution that encouraged them to make connections between their faith and their daily lives. Their strategy was a profound commitment to connecting talk and action. They constantly set a context for and educated others to see connections between YWCA rhetoric, ideals, and practices.

The "Politically Correct" Way, Maine Perspective
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
From Duke to Stanford, and from UCLA to MIT to UW-Madison, a fire storm of debate has been ignited over the "politically correct" (or "PC") way to shape university policy on issues of racial, gender, academic and intellectual diversity. The so-called PC agenda on women's studies, ethnic studies, gay and lesbian issues, Eastern history, and the recruitment and retention of minority students and faculty has attracted considerable heat on may of our nation;s compuses - even though PC-ism occupies the attention of just a small miniority of individuals on both sides of the issue.

Ronald Takaki, a 1962 Wooster graduate, came to speak on an increasing need for diversity in colleges as well as other sectors of society. A student writes about the current affairs between the United States government and the government of South Africa, especially concerning continuing apartheid. The College Republicans group on campus had their advertising material and posters torn down. Athletic updates for the past week are from page nine to page eleven. Diverse Voices Of Leadership: Different Rhythms And Emerging Harmonies, Kathleen E. Allen Edd
Dissertations
In our current research literature leaders have been identified through traditional sampling techniques; techniques in which individuals are selected by positions, reputation, and organizational success. The background assumptions for these techniques include that of leadership as a top-down phenomenon, under the purview of CEOs and presidents. Articulated by these sampling techniques is a voice of leadership that is based within the American individualistic culture, a voice from leaders who are white, older, and men. The purpose of this study was to explore whether there are different voices of leadership which are not presently reflected in the leadership literature. Fifteen individuals …
Respect For Diversity: The Case Of Feminist Legal Thought, Carl W. Tobias
Respect For Diversity: The Case Of Feminist Legal Thought, Carl W. Tobias
Law Faculty Publications
Respect for diversity was one quality many faculty members considered significant when searching in 1987 for a new dean of the University of Michigan School of Law. Yet other so-called elite law schools and less prestigious institutions recently have evinced little concern for diversity and even indifference toward the idea. Tenure and appointment disputes at several Ivy League schools have sparked heated controversy and call into question their institutional commitments to diversity. Those disputes have involved the legitimacy of work by women in legal theory and feminist legal thought, although considerable contentious activity also seems to reflect a general lack …
