The Permaculture Discussion Group: Participatory Learning For Community Connection And Systems Transformation, Belu Katz May 2024

The Permaculture Discussion Group: Participatory Learning For Community Connection And Systems Transformation, Belu Katz

Honors College

There is a need in our society to have a more holistic understanding of the polycrisis, the intertwining of environmental and social crises that create compounding effects, and the underlying issues that have temporarily and psychologically separated humans from our local ecosystems and biophysical limits. This requires creating space to deeply discuss these issues and possible responses. Permaculture is an ethical framework for designing regenerative and resilient human systems that work within, instead of against, nature. The Terrell House Permaculture Living & Learning Center is a student housing project where four resident stewards run the Permaculture & Gardening Club (PGC) …

With Great Power: Using Comics To Facilitate Discussion Of Systemic Oppression In Higher Education Literature Classes, Keri Crist-Wagner

All Dissertations

Undergraduate student participation in general education classes constitutes a point of struggle for many educators, especially when it comes to lessons centered around systems of oppression like racism, sexism, or heterosexism. Using both constructivism and counter storytelling as theoretical frameworks, this multi-method phenomenological case study explored the experiences of undergraduate honors students in a semester long general education literature class. The purpose of this study was to 1) explore how comics can be used as a pedagogical tool in higher education classrooms to facilitate discussion of systems of oppression, 2) assess the ways in which students interacted with comics, and …

Connecting Through Controversy: Disagreement As Respect, Paul Chen Jan 2024

Connecting Through Controversy: Disagreement As Respect, Paul Chen

Journal of Educational Controversy

Educators praise the benefits and virtues of teaching students how to discuss controversial topics with their peers with civility and respect. But in addition to developing these deliberative skills and intellectual dispositions, I suggest that a further goal of using controversial discussions as a pedagogy (CDAP) is to help students cultivate a respectful form of disagreement with others, openness to hearing opposing viewpoints, greater self-awareness of their own biases, and ultimately recognizing mutual integrity in everyone, including in those with whom they disagree.

In this paper, I first discuss why and then describe how I use CDAP in my classes …

School Voices: An Exploration Of Early Career Teachers’ Narratives On Student Voice And Dialogic Practices, Rachel Ada Meiklejohn May 2023

School Voices: An Exploration Of Early Career Teachers’ Narratives On Student Voice And Dialogic Practices, Rachel Ada Meiklejohn

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Classrooms are typically organized around the expectation that students’ voices should be used primarily for reciting answers elicited by teachers. Numerous studies show that moving away from this recitation model towards more dialogic practices has the potential to make literacy learning more effective and inclusive. Yet, dialogic classrooms in which students’ voices work together to create knowledge and make meaning of texts remain rare, especially in classrooms serving students of low-income and minority backgrounds. In order to understand how teachers develop their thinking about student voice and dialogic practices in literacy learning, I completed a qualitative case study of ten …

Knowledge, Awareness, And Intercultural Communication Effectiveness Among Us And Egyptian Student Physical Therapists Following An Educational Intervention, Jordyn Ann Bernstein Spt, Alysa Nichole Gregg Spt, Jessica Deanne Schmidt Spt

Physical Therapy Student Research Projects

Widespread technology has enhanced international collaboration opportunities. In healthcare professions, communication amongst different cultures is an essential skill to help professionals excel in diverse clinical settings. Physical Therapy programs in the US address the need for cultural competence with classroom activities, but direct interactions with student physical therapists (SPTs) from differing countries are rare. The goal of the study was to investigate changes in intercultural communication effectiveness among US and Egyptian SPTs following four educational sessions. Each session featured an educational video about aspects related to physical therapy in each country and was followed by small group discussions, during which …

Online Teaching Conference - A Blog Post, Manzoor Chowdhury

Title III Professional Development Reports

Attended the Online Teaching Conference in Long Beach, California (June 29 – July 1) and got the opportunity to learn about recent trends, new technology, and new challenges in online teaching. Presentations at the conference ranged from narrowly focused topics such as how to create great audio clips to more broad topics on online course design and student engagement. The conference also had sessions for open discussion where anyone could bring up any topic, ask questions, and participate in the discussion. A great conference that certainly helped me as a faculty member in my professional development.

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this action research was to evaluate how the implementation of asynchronous online discussions into the classroom impacts the critical thinking skills of secondary language arts students. Although critical thinking has shown to be an important 21st century skill (Paul & Elder, 2002), many students are leaving high school lacking the thinking skills necessary to succeed in a modern society (Arum & Roksa, 2011; Conley, 2015). Standardized testing results within the population of this study indicated similar critical thinking deficits as the rest of the nation. This study focused on two central research questions: (1) To what extent …

Using Flipgrid Discussions To Increase School Counseling Students’ Cultural Competence In The Online Classroom, Rebekah F. Cole

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

This pre-test/post-test quasi-experimental design study investigated the use of Flipgrid to increase school counseling students’ cultural competence, which was measured by the Global Perspectives Inventory (GPI). Student participants in the experimental group utilized Flipgrid to engage in cultural discussions while participants in the control group utilized Blackboard discussion boards.
