An overview of the oral health problems of common disabilities is presented as well as behavioral management techniques that could be easily implemented in the dental office. A general review of good oral hygiene for those …

Agenesis Of Maxillary Lateral Incisors In Orthodontic Patients And The Relation To Overall Tooth Size, Jane Wright Apr 2011

Agenesis Of Maxillary Lateral Incisors In Orthodontic Patients And The Relation To Overall Tooth Size, Jane Wright

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The maxillary lateral incisor is the second most frequently missing tooth in the dental arch with clinical management requiring a complex and multidisciplinary treatment approach. It has been suspected that teeth could be smaller in the maxillary or mandibular arches in patients experiencing agenesis of the maxillary lateral incisor, making ideal occlusal relationships and space creation for restoration of the lateral incisor difficult to obtain. The purpose of this study is to determine if a tooth size discrepancy exists in orthodontic patients with agenesis of the maxillary lateral incisor(s).

Forty sets of dental casts from Caucasian orthodontic patients (19 male …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Results of evaluating chemotherapeutic effectiveness have focused on planktonic, two-dimensional bacterial existence. Biofilms exist as three-dimensional structures which shelter bacteria deep within. Current research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of various chemotherapeutics against bacteria residing inside of a biofilm. In order to do so, this study evaluated the effectiveness of four common chemotherapeutics (cetylpyridinium chloride, chlorhexidine gluconate, chlorine dioxide, and essential oils) against four bacteria (S. mutans, S. sobrinus, F. nucleatum and P. gingivalis) in both planktonic and biofilm modeled culture media. Data was obtained through the measurement of zones of inhibition (ZOI) surrounding test discs placed on experimental …

The Quantification Of Displacement Of The Anterior Teeth In The Human Dentition, Peggy Jean Van Scotter-Asbach Aug 2010

The Quantification Of Displacement Of The Anterior Teeth In The Human Dentition, Peggy Jean Van Scotter-Asbach

Dissertations (1934 -)

The credibility of bite mark analysis as a forensic science is under fire in our legal system. The basis of opinions regarding the probability of a dental pattern observed in bite mark evidence matching a suspect's dentition has not been objectively substantiated. Though guidelines and standards are in place, bite mark analyses have failed to provide basic scientific methods in order to be deemed of evidentiary value. Forensic scientists need to take a step back and develop valid and reliable methodologies that provide a statistical approach for defining dental characteristics in the human dentition.

For this study, three computer-generated, mathematically …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Research suggests mood can influence recall of emotionally-relevant information. Yet, despite multiple studies examining the association of anxiety and exaggerated prediction and recall of dental pain, the influence of other moods on prediction and recall of dental pain remains poorly investigated. Further, the potential moderation and mediation effects for dental fear, fear of pain, and mood state have not been properly researched. The present study investigated variables associated with predicted pain (pain expected during the dental procedure) and recalled pain in oral surgery patients. Data were provided by a sample of 157 patients undergoing tooth extraction under local anesthetic. Patients …
