Revitalizing Decay, Owen Carey
Revitalizing Decay, Owen Carey
Masters Theses
Revitalizing Decay focuses to reimagine brick design, diverging from the conventional standardized brick, to introduce a crafted brick integrated with flora. Through the exploration of innovative sustainable solutions, this research aims to breathe new life into buildings facing advanced decay by embedding flora within the very structure of the brick. Buildings slotted for demolition typically go through a long process of approvals, signatures, etc. This thesis also aims to address the long process and instead pose an intervention that would streamline a typical demolition plan. With a primary focus on enhancing air quality, ensuring cost efficiency, and offering a temporary …

Masters Theses
The following project is an exploration and argument for greater acceptance of material change. The argument finds its narrative through the story of five historic coastal properties in Rhode Island that have become increasingly threatened by rising sea levels.
Despite undergoing foundation upheaval, relocation and leveling onto stilts, all but two homes remain intact. This project is a proposal for an alternative past in which the homes are not moved or raised, but instead ushered into states of decay that challenge our notions around sub-natures and their viability.
The Ecology Of American Noir, Katrina Younes
The Ecology Of American Noir, Katrina Younes
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In The Ecology of American Noir, I investigate the relationship between the conventions of noir fiction and film and its sub-types in relation to environmental crises. Specifically, I address questions that not only allow us to (re)read early hardboiled literature and neo-noir films, but that also help us identify a new sub-genre of noir and develop an ecocritical methodology: I call this contemporary sub-genre and methodology “eco-noir.” I trace the development of strategies of mapping urban blight and environmental deterioration in classic hardboiled fiction of the 1940s, neo-noir films of the 1970s, and eco-noir texts of the post millennial …
The Investigation Of A Likely Scenario For Natural Tornado Genesis And Evolution From An Initial Instability Profile, Alexios Nicolas Philippou, Kakkattukuzhy M. Isaac
The Investigation Of A Likely Scenario For Natural Tornado Genesis And Evolution From An Initial Instability Profile, Alexios Nicolas Philippou, Kakkattukuzhy M. Isaac
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A likely mechanism for the little-understood tornado genesis is proposed and its numerical implementation is presented. The Burgers-Rott vortex with its axis in the vertical direction is introduced as an instability mechanism, and the flow field then evolves under the influence of the atmospheric pressure, temperature and density variations with altitude. Buoyancy effects are implemented using the Boussinesq model. Results are presented and discussed for a set of conditions including mesh type and size, different turbulence models, and a few different boundary conditions. Post-processed results of the transient simulations including animations contain a wealth of information to help analyze tornado …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The study explored the role of school libraries in curbing the decay in reading habits among secondary school students in Nigeria. It adopted the conceptual research approach by relying on existing literature. The study discovered that reading makes a knowledgeable student, and facilitates self-discovery, vocabulary expansion, development of effective communication skills and students’ overall academic success. It also revealed that effective reading habits is a crucial skill that students should possess as it adds value to life; frees the mind from the shackles of information poverty and enriches their problem-solving skills. The study showed that the causes of decay in …
The Reactivation Of Desolate Architecture, Logan Dolezal
The Reactivation Of Desolate Architecture, Logan Dolezal
Masters in Architecture Program: Theses
A guiding concept for my thesis is the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi. Wabi-Sabi, as defined by Valentina Marin, “refers to an aesthetic philosophy and vision applied to objects, which alludes to beauty in imperfections and the value of the passage of time, and openly accepts the deterioration and transience of existence, both human and material.”
I believe that this concept can be applied to architecture and that we can utilize disregarded and desolate structures by creating insertions that promote interaction with decaying architecture. This notion eventually led to my discovery of my thesis statement, “The reactivation of desolate architecture through …
Total Absorption Spectroscopy Of Mo-106 And Tc-106, Michael Cooper
Total Absorption Spectroscopy Of Mo-106 And Tc-106, Michael Cooper
Doctoral Dissertations
Total absorption spectroscopy is a method of gamma-ray spectroscopy that has gained prominence in the past several decades, as nuclear data revisions are performed on older nuclear data, which is often incomplete. A strong understanding of underlying nuclear data, particularly fission and beta decay data, is essential for nuclear reactors and nuclear fuel decay heat. This PhD work involves the analysis of fission fragments 106Mo [Mo-106] and 106Tc [Tc-106]. These neutron rich isotopes contribute upwards of 6% of the cumulative fission yield of 241Pu [Pu-241] fission, and 4% of 239Pu [Pu-239] fission. Prior data for these two fission fragments only …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is an important determinant of endurance performance. Heat acclimation/acclimatization (HA/HAz) strategies elicit improvements in endurance performance. When heat exposure is reduced, intermittent heat training (IHT) is potentially beneficial to alleviate HA/HAz adaptation decay, however corresponding VO2max responses are unknown. PURPOSE: To determine the effects of HA/HAz and IHT on VO2max in endurance runners and identify how long VO2max adaptations remain following removal of repeated heat exposure. METHODS: Twenty-seven male endurance runners (mean ± SD; age, 36 ± 12 years; body mass, 73.03 ± 8.97 kg; height, 178.81 ± 6.39 cm; VO …

Energy Decay And Blow-Up Of Solutions For A Class Of System Of Generalized Nonlinear Klein-Gordon Equations With Source And Damping Terms, Zeynep Sümeyye Çeli̇k, Şevket Gür, Erhan Pi̇şki̇n
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this work, we investigate generalized coupled nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations with nonlinear damping and source terms and initial-boundary value conditions, in a bounded domain. We obtain decay of solutions by use of Nakao inequality. The blow up of solutions with negative initial energy is also established.

The Ephemerality Of Building: A Case Study Of Material Life And Reuse, John Brewster Loud
The Ephemerality Of Building: A Case Study Of Material Life And Reuse, John Brewster Loud
Senior Projects Spring 2023
Western colonialist architecture has a long and complicated relationship with its materiality and the surrounding ecosystem. For the past millennia, buildings and structures have permanently altered the landscape. These changes are not always bad. An ecosystem is constantly evolving, and sometimes these changes allow for growth and metamorphosis. In other cases, however, these colonialist structures can bring about ecosystem destruction and deterioration over time. Materiality and change are approached in this project as they relate to architecture. In Western architecture, materials are almost always new and standardized and have exact lengths and widths that can be ordered to certain dimensions. …

Effects Of Peer-Supported And Self-Guided Exercise On Self-Reported Anxiety And Depression Among Young Adults - A Pilot Study, Xihe Zhu, Michael D. Kostick, Justin A. Haegele
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications
Mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression became heightened issues for college-aged young adults during the global pandemic. The main purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a peer-supported exercise intervention on young adults (vs. self-guided exercise) who reported elevated levels of anxiety and/or depression. A parallel group design was used where young adults (n = 27) were randomly assigned to either a peer-supported or self-guided exercise group which lasted for eight weeks. The generalized anxiety and depression subscales of the Counseling Center Assessment of Psychological Symptoms (CCAPS-34) were measured for a baseline and then at …

Doorway, Jaycee R. Guttormson
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Artist Statement
Doorway is a piece that exists in a state of duality and cyclicality, just as a door operates both as an opening and a barricade. Through decay, there is new life and new life gives way to decay. This fact of life and death existing synchronously is furthered through the cohesion of natural forms and manmade structures. In this state, the form is both familiar and unrecognizable and asks the viewer to step into a world that is as alien as it is commonplace.
This dichotomy of life and death, growth and decay, and familiar and strange is …
Objects In Transformation, Caroline Coxe Lippincott
Objects In Transformation, Caroline Coxe Lippincott
Masters Theses
Traces and marks left behind tell the stories of buildings and their materials. Remnants of the past remain, while new construction is layered on top, creating a kind of palimpsest. Artifacts of material time - rust, erosion, growth - are inevitable, yet often feared. Typically in search of longevity, architects gravitate toward materials and finishes that promise durability. My work questions some of the assumptions we have about material quality as a function of time. Through experimental artifacts, this thesis reorients our perceptions of time’s effects on the built and natural environments, and introduces a new and expanded time scale.
Between The Garden And The Gardener, Sara Lynne Lindsay
Between The Garden And The Gardener, Sara Lynne Lindsay
Theses and Dissertations
My work uses plant material and soil as a record of personal, cultural, and ecological history. History is not only held in the buildings and monuments, but in the soil itself. I gather this soil and foliage from both cultivated and uncultivated locations for my artwork. Using traditional domestic techniques of drying and canning, I preserve the materials that I have gathered. These will then be sewn together, cooked, and encrusted into objects. Despite my labor of preserving, these organic art supplies are transient. When made into works of art, they can be viewed in their vulnerable state, fighting against …

Enigma - Ongoing Development Towards Novel Beta-Decay Spectroscopy Station At Isolde, Philipp Wagenknecht
Masters Theses
Beta decay and collinear laser spectroscopy are proven efficient tools to study nuclear structure far from stability. Two areas of significance are investigations into nuclear deformation and shape coexistence, as well as delayed neutron emissions used in nuclear energy applications. This contribution presents the ongoing development towards a novel beta-decay spectroscopy station for the VITO experiment at CERN’s radioactive ion beam facility ISOLDE. The setup will utilize both collinear laser spectroscopy and beta-decay spectroscopy to measure the energy and spin-parities of the ground and excited states of radioactive beams. Initial designs of the support structure, magnetic field, and detector array …
Calculated Charge State Distributions And Anisotropies Following The Β-Decay Of 6he, Eva E. Sculhoff
Calculated Charge State Distributions And Anisotropies Following The Β-Decay Of 6he, Eva E. Sculhoff
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
According to the standard model the beta-decay of 6He is a pure Gamow-Teller transition. The aim of this thesis is to provide theoretical support in the search for new physics beyond the standard model by examining the angular distribution of beta particles following decay. The simple structure of 6He, along with its ability to under go beta-decay into 6Li+ makes it an ideal candidate for studying the weak force. Due to the sudden increase in nuclear charge from Z = 2 to Z = 3, and the recoil momentum of the daughter nucleus resulting from the emitted leptons, this decay …
My Condolences; Mourning, Decay And Intimacy In John Donne’S Songs And Sonnets, Sarah Nunez-Lafontaine
My Condolences; Mourning, Decay And Intimacy In John Donne’S Songs And Sonnets, Sarah Nunez-Lafontaine
Scripps Senior Theses
In John Donne's poetry on death, he describes grave as this intimate, secluded or safe location. Donne seems to believe that death is not the antithesis to love or intimacy, but rather a final place for two people to meet. His poetry, in an attempt to alleviate the fears surrounding death, romanticize and idealize decay. But this brings forth new questions; How is this intimacy that Donne describes affected by the funeral and the mourning process.

Wet, Flowering, Dry, Caroline A. Minchew
Theses and Dissertations
Wet, flowering, dry is a series of photographic works that explore how vernal pools are a macrocosm for holding memory and a site of omnipresent solitude and decay. This installation distills an embodied and ephemeral experience of how we are grounded in a network of invisible connections with our surroundings. This network becomes evident through biological, historical, and field research conducted at the vernal pools for over a year. Through slow observation and consideration of how multiple stories of place can weave together into a larger parable, Wet, flowering, dry reveals how the life cycle of a vernal pool is …
First Measurement Of B(Ξc0 → Π−Λ+C ), Michael Kent Wilkinson
First Measurement Of B(Ξc0 → Π−Λ+C ), Michael Kent Wilkinson
Dissertations - ALL
The first measurement of the branching fraction of the Ξc0 baryon in its decay to π− and Λ+c hadrons, B(Ξc0 → π−Λ+c ), is presented. This measurement was conducted with the LHCb detector, located on the Large Hadron Collider, using 13 TeV proton-proton collisions. There have been a number of theoretical predictions for the size of this branching fraction, spanning more than an order of magnitude; this large difference is primarily due to differing assumptions about the internal interactions contributing to the decay. The branching fraction measured here provides the first experimental evidence for the nature of these interactions; it …
Field Durability Test Of Clt Wall Envelope Using Physical Barriers Against Termites And Structural Performance Of Nailed Hold-Down Brackets Connected To Fungus-Exposed Clt Walls, Kamal Neupane
Theses and Dissertations
The effectiveness of using commercial polyethylene flashing and stainless-steel mesh in CLT wall systems as the termite barriers were evaluated in a short-term field test. American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) E21's visual ratings ranged from 10 to 9 in the specimens showing little damage when no physical barriers were used. Termites were able to crawl beyond the physical barriers in few specimens showing the necessity of further research on height and installation method of physical barriers. On the second part, the effect of decay caused due to Postia placenta, a brown-rot fungus, on the structural performance of hold-down brackets connected …

According to the introduction:
Vacant spaces are the non-utilized or underutilized lands due to their parcel shape, size, or geographic location. These vacant lands are often associated with illegal dumping of construction and general waste due to avoidance of refuse collection fee payments, leading to social, environmental, and financial risks. With the rise in illegal dumping over the years, we aim to address this problem at the avoidance, minimization, and recovery level of waste management.

Exploring The Overlap, Saliency, And Consistency Of Environmental Predictors In Crime Hot Spots: A Remote Systematic Social Observation And Case-Control Examination, Nathan T. Connealy
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Despite the common finding that crime is highly concentrated in space, the specific locations, characteristics, and contexts of crime hot spots are not consistently the same or generalizable across unique units of analysis and crime types. This dissertation will simultaneously integrate different types of environmental criminology predictors, including crime generators and attractors and environmental disorder indicators, to best identify the situational predictors of hot spot street segments relative to empirical controls in Indianapolis for several different crime types. Hot spot and control units will be compared based on the presence of spatially joined crime generators and attractors and environmental disorder …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Table Grapes (Vitus vinifera) are highly valued horticulture crops world-wide. Often, table grape production in the southern United States is restricted due to climate and pest issues. Viticulture production could be expanded to this region by the use of controlled environment growing systems, such as high tunnels (HT). The objective of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of HT systems for grape cultivation and compare the effects of different cluster thinning treatments on vines. In this two-year study, the cultivars Faith, Gratitude, Hope, and Jupiter were grown in HT systems and assessed for postharvest qualities at harvest and during …
