Applying A Tri-Learner Model Of Extension Collaboration: Local-State-Campus Partnership, Shannon Lipscomb, Barbara Bromley Brody, Megan Pratt, Toiresa Frazier
The Journal of Extension
The Tri-Learner model of Extension Collaboration offers an innovative approach to address community needs and advance research by convening faculty from academic research, statewide Extension, and community-embedded Extension. This article describes development of a new Tri-Learner Model through an early childhood resilience project, with data from 32 participants. We present four key factors for the model’s success: First, ensure that research and application are responsive to community needs rather than University-driven. Second, establish trusting, reciprocal relationships. Third, equally value each team member’s knowledge and skills. Finally, leverage collaborative University structures and/or funding to foster reciprocal partnerships to maximize research impacts.
An Ecological Approach To Forage Management, J L. Brock, R.J M. Hay
An Ecological Approach To Forage Management, J L. Brock, R.J M. Hay
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
The principles of defoliation management for maximum production of quality herbage are well researched, namely the manipulation of frequency and severity of defoliation, but their impact on the various levels of ecological organisation in pastures is nol fully understood or their interpretation appreciated. Using grazed ryegrass-white clover pasture as; example, detailed sward studies have suggested the following model. Defoliation frequency and severity interact lo produce varying levels of physiological stress and morphological adaptation which affecl the survival rate and size of individual growth units, the lowest level of organisation. Increasing frequency of defoliation reduces organ size but increases survival rate …
Developing A Stand-Alone Children’S Hospital In Southern Nevada: Improving Pediatric Care And Diversifying The Regional Economy, The Lincy Institute
Developing A Stand-Alone Children’S Hospital In Southern Nevada: Improving Pediatric Care And Diversifying The Regional Economy, The Lincy Institute
Lincy Institute Events
Southern Nevada is the largest metropolitan region in the country without a stand-alone children's hospital. The absence of such a facility results in poor health outcomes for children, fragmented and inadequate specialized care, and a shortage of pediatric medical professionals. Currently ranked last in clinical care nationwide, Nevada urgently needs a centralized, academic-based children's hospital to improve health services.
The Lincy Institute hosted a community forum to release the findings of a new report conducted by Tripp Umbach detailing why Southern Nevada needs a stand-alone children’s hospital. Tripp Umbach is a recognized industry leader, with 30 years of successful partnerships …

The Decline Of Mentorship And The Urgency To Share Valuable Knowledge With The Next Generation, Morgan Christopher
Masters Theses
Senior mentorship of junior professionals is in decline, risking the loss of generational guidance and support, limiting career opportunities, and hindering social and professional development for both parties.
The thesis discusses the definition of a mentor and types of mentor relationships, the benefits of participating in a mentor relationship, and the influence junior professionals have on these relationships. However, extensive research is lacking in determining the practical steps senior professionals can take to reverse the decline of mentorship and bring our society back to the mentoring mindset we once possessed.
The topics that have been examined are as follows:

Cultural Motivations And Effects Of Live Game Streaming, Gordon David Littleford
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Live game streaming combines many of the social mechanisms and cultural impacts of social media with the entertainment and social impacts of traditional media. Live game streaming (LGS) is growing in audience size and engagement. Further, the financial impact of LGS is rising to the level of Hollywood films and the music industry. As such this study focused on how the communicative environment of live game streaming impacts the live game streaming culture at large, as well as the effects on both the individual streamers and their communities during live game streams. The emergent design of this qualitative digital ethnography …

It is natural to want to offer help and support when someone we love or care about is experiencing loneliness. Paradoxically, this is one of the best ways to reduce our own loneliness. In response, Utah State University (USU) Extension faculty developed three fact sheets to describe some of the most effective ways to reduce loneliness. This fourth fact sheet suggests ways to ensure our efforts to support others who are experiencing loneliness are helpful and supportive.

The Hungry Heartland project integrates service learning, media literacy, and multidisciplinary collaboration. It engages students from three disciplines to produce multimedia communication and raise public awareness about the lack of healthy food access in Kansas. Interviews and surveys were used to gather student feedback. Overall, students found the project a challenging learning experience, gained a sense of social responsibility, but remained conflicted about multidisciplinary collaboration. Lessons were drawn to inform future iterations of the project.
Liberating Service Learning And The Rest Of Higher Education Community Engagement By Randy Stoecker (2016), Barbara Jacoby
Liberating Service Learning And The Rest Of Higher Education Community Engagement By Randy Stoecker (2016), Barbara Jacoby
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
The title and purpose of this book, Liberating Service-Learning and the Rest of Higher Education Civic Engagement, is an intentional double entendre. On the one hand, Stoecker seeks a form of service learning that “liberates” all those who are involved in it, whether they are inside or outside of higher education. In the second sense, Stoecker aims to liberate institutionalized service learning’s lack of significant accomplishments both in educating students and in enhancing communities. Stoecker proposes liberating service learning by making its current theory explicit, deconstructing it, and then building a new theory that leads to a new practice that …

The Importance Of Sense Of Community In Recovery For Individuals Living With Serious Mental Illness, Natalia Gomez
The Importance Of Sense Of Community In Recovery For Individuals Living With Serious Mental Illness, Natalia Gomez
Theses and Dissertations
People with serious mental illness face a variety of barriers to participating in community life. Some of these barriers include limits in social functioning which can then affect social relationships and life satisfaction (Sanchez et al, 2016). Devaluation based on mental health status is an important barrier to address due to its connection to stigma and relationships. The more an individual fears that they will be undervalued and discriminated against, the more they may fear interacting with others. They may hide that they are in mental health treatment or avoid social encounters that they consider as possibly rejecting. These behaviors …

Comprehensive Climate Vulnerability Assessment Of A Regional Karst Landscape For Hazard Mitigation Planning, Kara Brunot
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Climate change is the global phenomena affecting all sectors of society by creating conditions more conducive for the occurrence of extreme weather events. It is projected that the intensity and frequency of events will increase. Flooding, in particular, is projected to increase in frequency due to more intense precipitation events. Karst landscapes are especially vulnerable to climate change impacts because of their unique hydrology and geology. Karst flooding is most likely to occur from prolonged or intense rain events, which climate change will likely make more feasible. Areas are disproportionately affected by climate change due to population demographics and environmental …

Gamelan & Mental Health: Experiential Music Making In University Communities, Ethan Roger Rohl
Masters Theses
Gamelan ensembles in North American institutions, have served as a pedagogical tool in music curriculums since their initial proliferation abroad in 1960, with Mantle Hood’s (1960) concept of “bi-musicality” serving as the primary motivation. I argue that the usage of these ensembles needs to grow beyond the original pedagogical agenda that brought them here, and that universities and scholars should acknowledge the benefits these ensembles provide beyond Hood’s term of bi-musicality.
In recent years, the rapid decline in mental health, has constituted what some scholars call a crisis, or an epidemic of loneliness. This decline is especially present among millennials …

Selective Sheep Grazing In An Heterogeneous Wheatgrass Dominated Pasture Related To Stocking Rate, G L. Siffredi, M A. Brizuela, M S. Cid, C Cangiano
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
It has been hypothesized that patch and community selection are driven by forage quality and/or quantity. We assess the relationship between vegetation characteristics and community and patch selection by sheep under continuous grazing at different stocking rates in an heterogeneous pasture. Our results suggest that when communities strongly differed in nutritive value sheep recurrently select the higher quality community in spite of its low biomass. However, sheep do not completely exclude the poorer quality community, generating a patchy vegetation pattern.

"This Is How The West Ends”: A Content Analysis Of Conservative Youtuber's Notions Of Western Excellence, Michelle Johnson
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
In 2023, YouTube was one of the most used social media platforms in the United States alone. While existing scholarship (Finlayson 2022) has observed linkages between right-wing social media and distrust in institutions of government, family, and others, I seek to understand how conservatives use YouTube as a means to teach their audience racialized, gendered, and nationalistic ideas about the Western hegemonic order. To examine this issue, I conducted an in-depth qualitative content analysis of three key conservative content creators: Ben Shapiro, Matt Walsh, and Michael Knowles. Two videos were chosen within each creator's profile using keyword searches such as …

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Lucala-2 is a small village located in the northern part of Angola, with 750 residents situated by a bridge crossing the Lucala river. This area gained strategic importance during the Angolan Civil War (1975–2002), particularly due to the Lucala bridge, which served as a critical crossing point. Throughout the war, minefields were strategically laid at all four corners of the bridge, illustrating the extensive use of landmines that has continued to impact Angola. These mines remain a harrowing legacy, contributing to ongoing casualties and significantly hindering development efforts long after the war's conclusion. The community explained how they have been …
