Adult Texting In Context : Exploring Norms For Mature Users Of Text-Messaging Technologies., Angela M. Barlow Dec 2008

Adult Texting In Context : Exploring Norms For Mature Users Of Text-Messaging Technologies., Angela M. Barlow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An online survey exploring the patterns of adult text-message use was completed by 150 traditional college age young adults ages 18-24 and 171 adults ages 25-68. Because youth traditionally are among the first group to adopt new communication technologies, much research has been conducted among the adolescent and young adult population regarding the prevalence and importance of text-messaging; however, a research deficit exists regarding adult textmessage use. Data gathered from this survey were categorized and analyzed for emergent content regarding the use of text-messaging, what roll texting plays in adult's communication patterns, the sociological impact of text-messaging on survey respondents, …

Communication, Crisis, And Identity: Dialectical Tensions In Family Narratives About Hurricane Katrina, Laura Poole Rogers Dec 2008

Communication, Crisis, And Identity: Dialectical Tensions In Family Narratives About Hurricane Katrina, Laura Poole Rogers

Dissertations

In this study victims of Hurricane Katrina ordered their experiences with the crisis into meaningful themes which expressed their values, actions, inactions, occupations, needs and losses, and feelings. In interviews participants explained what happened, when it happened, how they responded, how they thought they should have responded, and how they handled situations surrounding the storm. Narratives about situations after the storm revealed descriptions of their and others' relationships in interactions with representatives of larger social units. The dialectical analysis revealed dialectical tensions that emphasized participants' dynamic and changing relationships and identities. Dialectical analysis of narratives about those relationships revealed dialectical …

An Integrated Routing And Distributed Scheduling Approach For Hybrid Ieee 802.16e Mesh Networks For Vehicular Broadband Communications, Rahul Amin Dec 2008

An Integrated Routing And Distributed Scheduling Approach For Hybrid Ieee 802.16e Mesh Networks For Vehicular Broadband Communications, Rahul Amin

All Theses

An integrated routing and distributed scheduling approach for fast deployable IEEE 802.16e networks is presented where distributed base stations with dual radios form a mesh backhaul and subscriber stations communicate through these base stations. The mesh backhaul is formed via an IEEE 802.16e mesh mode radio on each base station, while the subscriber stations communicate with base stations via PMP mode radios. The proposed routing scheme divides the deployed network into several routing zones. Each routing zone contains several base stations that form the mesh backhaul with one base station equipped with either a fiber, satellite or any other point-to-point …

The Drama Of Collaborative Creativity: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Hollywood Film Making-Of Documentaries, Robert M. González Jr. Nov 2008

The Drama Of Collaborative Creativity: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Hollywood Film Making-Of Documentaries, Robert M. González Jr.

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Current creativity research is dominated by attention to the individual, with increasingly less attention paid to creativity in its context, in groups, and in filmmaking as a collaboratively creative enterprise. This study answers the research call to explore filmmaking as an exemplar for collaborative creativity. Utilizing the stories told on DVD extras on special edition releases of feature films, this study analyzes how collaborative creativity is storied. In turn, these stories reveal specific communication forms, practices, and strategies that enrich theoretical conceptions of collaborative creativity. Following dramatistic concepts elaborated by Kenneth Burke, this rhetorical analysis finds three emergent patterns of …

Mentoring Dialogues: An Investigation Of The Dialectical Tensions And Management Strategies In Mentoring Relationships, Paul J. Kosempel Nov 2008

Mentoring Dialogues: An Investigation Of The Dialectical Tensions And Management Strategies In Mentoring Relationships, Paul J. Kosempel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past 30 years, mentoring has gained perhaps the largest recognition of any phenomenon related to career success. Much of the current research that has explored mentoring relationships has been conducted in fields other than communication studies, although better communication is often the recommended solution to improve mentoring. The majority of research has focused on the outcomes of mentoring relationships, rather than the process of mentoring relationships. Mentoring has also not been studied through a relational dialectics perspective. This study explored the communication dynamics within mentoring relationships through a relational dialectics theoretical lens. The study utilized multiple methods including …

Real Lies, White Lies And Gray Lies: Towards A Typology Of Deception, Erin M. Bryant Oct 2008

Real Lies, White Lies And Gray Lies: Towards A Typology Of Deception, Erin M. Bryant

Human Communication and Theatre Faculty Research

Despite its aversive label, deception is an extremely common social behavior that the average person performs on a daily basis (Camden, Motley, & Wilson, 1984; DePaulo, Kashy, Kirkendol, Wyer, & Epstein, 1996; Turner, Edgley, & Omstead, 1975). In fact, the use of white lies is so widespread they are often viewed as a form of communication competency that is necessary to successfully negotiate social interactions (Camden et al, 1984; Di Battista, 1994; Knapp & Comedena, 1975; Knapp, Hart, & Dennis, 1974). This study aimed to explore how college students perceive white lies and differentiate them from other types of lies …

Speaking The Right Language: The Scientific Method As A Framework For A Continuous Quality Improvement Program Within Academic Medical Research Compliance Units, Kurt B. Nolte, Douglas M. Stewart, Kevin C. O'Hair, William L. Gannon, Michael S. Briggs, A Marie Barron, Judy Pointer, Richard S. Larson

Pathology Research and Scholarship

The authors developed a novel continuous quality improvement (CQI) process for academic biomedical research compliance administration. A challenge in developing a quality improvement program in a nonbusiness environment is that the terminology and processes are often foreign. Rather than training staff in an existing quality improvement process, the authors opted to develop a novel process based on the scientific method--a paradigm familiar to all team members. The CQI process included our research compliance units. Unit leaders identified problems in compliance administration where a resolution would have a positive impact and which could be resolved or improved with current resources. They …

In Phase Two, 36 in-depth interviews were conducted using video vignettes. Data collection and analysis employed grounded theory methodology.

RESULTS: Supervisors' assessments of trainee trustworthiness for independent clinical work involved consideration of four dimensions: knowledge/skill, discernment of limitations, truthfulness, and …

Autonomous And Intelligent Radio Switching For Heterogeneous Wireless Networks, Qiuyi Duan, Charles D. Knutson, Lei Wang, Daniel Zappala Sep 2008

Autonomous And Intelligent Radio Switching For Heterogeneous Wireless Networks, Qiuyi Duan, Charles D. Knutson, Lei Wang, Daniel Zappala

Faculty Publications

As wireless devices continue to become more prevalent, heterogeneous wireless networks - in which communicating devices have at their disposal multiple types of radios - will become the norm. Communication between nodes in these networks ought to be as simple as possible; they should be able to seamlessly switch between different radios and network stacks on the fly in order to better serve the user. To make this a possibility, we consider the challenging problems of when two communicating devices should decide to switch to a different radio, and which radio they should choose. We design an Autonomous and Intelligent …

Applications Of Combinatorial Designs In Key Pre-Distribution In Sensor Networks., Dibyendu Chakrabarti Dr. Sep 2008

Applications Of Combinatorial Designs In Key Pre-Distribution In Sensor Networks., Dibyendu Chakrabarti Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Key pre-distribution is an important area of research in Distributed Sensor Networks (DSN). Some improved techniques over the existing schemes (employing combinatorial designs) have been proposed in this thesis and detailed mathematical analysis of the schemes has been presented. At first, combinatorial design followed by randomized merging strategy is applied to key pre-distribution in sensor nodes. Our main target is to get more than one pair of common keys between any pair of nodes to provide a robust network in terms of security under adversarial conditions where some nodes may get compromised. A transversal design is used to construct a …

Shift Report And Sbar: Strategies For Clinical Postconference., Fatima Ascano-Martin Sep 2008

Shift Report And Sbar: Strategies For Clinical Postconference., Fatima Ascano-Martin

Nursing | Faculty Scholarship

Conducting an effective postconference continues to be challenging because of low levels of student participation. Many students are exhausted at the end of the clinical day, which lessens their participation in postconference. In my experience, students often omit important information, such as patients’ age, sex, race, and other medical problems, during initial reports. Some have trouble providing patients’ information in an organized manner as well. The SBAR (situation-background-assessment-recommendation) communication tool can be used as a strategy to conduct clinical postconference.

Photo-Elicitation As A Method Of Assessing Village Needs, Lulu Rodriguez, Denise Bjelland Sep 2008

Photo-Elicitation As A Method Of Assessing Village Needs, Lulu Rodriguez, Denise Bjelland

Journal of Applied Communications

Photo-elicitation is a method of gathering data from respondents who are asked to take photographs or critically examine and reflect on images taken by others to offer a more “native” view of often cross-cultural or inter-group experiences. This method was applied to determine what the residents of a village in China’s Hangzhou province saw as their community’s development priorities by asking them to take photographs of local scenes, characters and objects to depict their needs. Through their snapshots, they indicated the need to diversify their community’s economic base (currently limited to snake production and processing), the need for better transportation …

Penchant For Print: Media Strategies In Communicating Agricultural Information, Amanda Ruth-Mcswain Sep 2008

Penchant For Print: Media Strategies In Communicating Agricultural Information, Amanda Ruth-Mcswain

Journal of Applied Communications

The news media provide much of the information the public receives about agriculture and agricultural issues, but they are not the only players in the communication equation. Sources supply the news media with facts and information that eventually direct public thought and opinion about agriculture. Therefore, agricultural communication professionals play a significant role in the dissemination of agricultural information through the news media. In an attempt to better understand the role of agricultural communication professionals, the purpose of this study was to explore their media strategies and choices—specifically their use of different media outlets for their communication efforts. The present …

Pediatric Residents' Use Of Jargon During Counseling About Newborn Genetic Screening Results, Michael Farrell, Lindsay Deuster, Jodi Donovan, Stephanie Christopher Aug 2008

Pediatric Residents' Use Of Jargon During Counseling About Newborn Genetic Screening Results, Michael Farrell, Lindsay Deuster, Jodi Donovan, Stephanie Christopher

College of Professional Studies Faculty Research and Publications

OBJECTIVE. The goal was to investigate pediatric residents’ usage of jargon during discussions about positive newborn screening test results.

METHODS. An explicit-criteria abstraction procedure was used to identify jargon usage and explanations in transcripts of encounters between residents and standardized parents of a fictitious infant found to carry cystic fibrosis or sickle cell hemoglobinopathy. Residents were recruited from a series of educational workshops on how to inform parents about positive newborn screening test results. The time lag from jargon words to explanations was measured by using “statements,” each of which contained 1 subject and 1 predicate.

RESULTS. Duplicate abstraction revealed …
