Enhancing Mental Toughness In Dancers: An Intervention Study With Longitudinal Analysis And Clustering Approaches, Zoe Beck, Logan Lefke, Grant Morgan, Andreas Stamatis
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Mental toughness (MT), a psychological construct, is pivotal in achieving peak athletic performance. The literature on MT, predominantly observational in nature, remains notably limited within the realm of dance. PURPOSE: To understand the impact of an MT intervention on dancers by examining score changes over time and identifying distinct response patterns through clustering. METHODS: Female athletes (N = 39; Mage = 19.86, SD = 1.21) participated in a structured intervention designed to enhance MT, with scores collected before the intervention, after, and at a 6-week follow-up. MT scores were collected using the Mental Toughness Index …

Background
Walking patterns in stroke survivors are highly heterogeneous, which poses a challenge in systematizing treatment prescriptions for walking rehabilitation interventions. Objectives
We used bilateral spatiotemporal and force data during walking to create a multi-site research sample to: (1) identify clusters of walking behaviors in people post-stroke and neurotypical controls and (2) determine the generalizability of these walking clusters across different research sites. We hypothesized that participants post-stroke will have different walking impairments resulting in different clusters of walking behaviors, which are also different from control participants. Methods
We gathered data from 81 post-stroke participants across 4 research sites and …Multi-Site Identification And Generalization Of Clusters Of Walking Behaviors In Individuals With Chronic Stroke And Neurotypical Controls, Natalia Sanchez, Nicolas Schweighofer, Sara J. Slack, Location, Diversification, Or R&D Intensity? How The Most (And Least) Innovative Firms Deploy Resources, Jamil Kreugel, Matthew Farrell, Chris H. Willis
College of Business (Strome) Posters
Firms frequently innovate by recombining knowledge components. Through bringing together diverse scientific or technological concepts, firms can reassemble these extant knowledge components into novel and useful innovations. At the same time, many of the mechanisms firms use to recombine knowledge components carry substantial agency costs. When firms conduct research and development, diversify, hold slack resources, or locate near close competitors, they become vulnerable to misappropriation of investor resources due to opportunistic actions by agents. Using patent citation data from semiconductor firms, we study how firms, which consistently produce high-quality innovations, balance the need for knowledge recombination with the need to …

Cluster Typologies And Firm Survival: Complementary And Substitutive Effects, Chris H. Willis, Matthew Farrell, Hami Usta
College of Business (Strome) Posters
Agglomerations, or "clusters," are typically defined as the idea that firms can benefit from shared locations through mutual knowledge, labor pools, and suppliers, and have long been a subject of scholarly interest. However, research in geographic economics has identified a broad array of agglomeration externalities beyond such supply-side clusters, which problematizes the use of the term "cluster" to refer to any geographic grouping of firms. Clusters can be groups of firms from the same country ("country-of-origin" clusters), demand side (clustering to lower search costs for customers), Jacobsian clusters (tight groups of diverse firms), internal (groupings of firms from the same …
The Impact Of Cluster Strength On Wages: An Empirical Analysis, Devan Schaefer
The Impact Of Cluster Strength On Wages: An Empirical Analysis, Devan Schaefer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I examine the relationship between clusters (i.e., the grouping of competitive, interconnected industries within a geographical area) and wages, building upon the work of Marshall (1890) and Porter (2003) on the importance of clusters for regional economic development. I seek to answer two research questions. First, after accounting for robustness tests, do clusters continue to affect wages positively? Second, is labor force productivity the only channel through which this relationship occurs? In my analysis, I employ ordinary least squares, two-stage least squares, and fixed effects regression analyses using panel data from 2009 to 2014 for every U.S. …

Context: Some individuals represent forms of "atypical diabetes" (AD) that do not conform to typical features of either type 1 diabetes (T1D) or type 2 diabetes (T2D). These forms of AD display a range of phenotypic characteristics that likely reflect different endotypes based on unique etiologies or pathogenic processes.
Objective: To develop an analytical approach to identify and cluster phenotypes of AD.
Methods: We developed Discover Atypical Diabetes (DiscoverAD), a data mining framework, to identify and cluster phenotypes of AD. DiscoverAD was trained against characteristics of manually classified patients with AD among 278 adults with diabetes within the Cameron County …
Two’S A Crowd? Implications Of Economic Geography For Corporate Governance, Matthew Farrell
Two’S A Crowd? Implications Of Economic Geography For Corporate Governance, Matthew Farrell
Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration
Although literature on corporate governance and economic geography often explores similar constructs, theories, and other matters, little work has been done examining their joint effects. This two-essay dissertation integrates these literatures in order to partially fill this gap by asking the following research questions:
1.) Do geographic proximity and multiple directorships function as substitutes or complements?
2.) How is the governance of highly innovative firms affected by the presence of Marshallian externalities?
While some scholars suggest that multiple directorships lead to board members neglecting their advisory and monitoring obligations, others have embraced the idea that holding multiple board seats can …

Stability, Electronic Structure, And Nonlinear Optical Properties In Clusters And Materials: A Synergistic Experimental-Computational Analysis, Maksim Kulichenko
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The main objective of Chemistry as a science is an understanding of how and why certain atoms are bonded together and what effects these bonds cause. Modern computational chemistry offers a wide range of tools that greatly assist the exploration of vast chemical space replacing expensive trial-and-error experimental approaches. Computational chemistry may serve to characterize newly synthesized compounds and provide atomic scale insights inaccessible to experimentalists’ vision. Moreover, predictive power of computational chemistry may be used as a guidance for future experiments and for the rational design of new compounds with desired properties.
This dissertation demonstrates the capabilities of joint …
Indicators Of Deception: Science Or Non-Science, Kristina Vasquez
Indicators Of Deception: Science Or Non-Science, Kristina Vasquez
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Deception detection is used by many law enforcement professionals who work in interviews and interrogations. The ability to detect deception or having knowledge on the signs of deception is very important in not only law enforcement, but in other careers and everyday life. The question remains: is deception detection a science or not a science? There are three areas where someone can learn how to detect deception and those are verbal communication, non-verbal communication, and paralanguage. The use of verbal communication looks at what the person is saying with their words. The use of non-verbal communication looks at what someone …

Periodic Trends In The Infrared And Optical Absorption Spectra Of Metal Chalcogenide Clusters, Alain Ward
Theses and Dissertations
We have investigated the Optical absorption, Infrared spectra, Binding Energies, and various other cluster properties to determine the existence of periodic trend for Transition Metal Chalcogenide Clusters ligated with CO ligands. We were motivated to answer the question of whether periodic behavior can be observed in properties of octahedral metal-chalcogenide clusters. We have used the Amsterdam Density Functional code to calculate the electronic structure of Transition Metal Chalcogenide Clusters using gradient-corrected density functional theory. We determined the existence of several periodic trends in properties of octahedral Transition Metal Chalcogenide Clusters TM6Se8(CO)6. To investigate these …

Carbon atom functionalization via generation of carbanions is the cornerstone of carborane chemistry. In this work, we report the synthesis and structural characterization of free ortho-carboranyl [C2B10H11]−, a three-dimensional inorganic analog of the elusive phenyl anion that features a “naked” carbanion center. The first example of a stable, discrete C(H)-deprotonated carborane anion was isolated as a completely separated ion pair with a crown ether-encapsulated potassium cation. An analogous approach led to the isolation and structural characterization of a doubly deprotonated 1,1′-bis(o-carborane) anion [C2B10H10] …

The Spatial-Temporal Model Of Covid-19 Tests, Cases, And Deaths In The State Of Nebraska, Makayla Schissel
The Spatial-Temporal Model Of Covid-19 Tests, Cases, And Deaths In The State Of Nebraska, Makayla Schissel
Capstone Experience
The goal of this project was to illustrate the spread of COVID-19 tests, cases, and deaths within the state of Nebraska and identify non-random clusters using a spatial-temporal model. This project is pertinent and innovative, as few spatial-temporal models in the United States revolving around COVID-19 offer information at the county, let alone, the state level. De-identified data was extracted from the State of Nebraska’s Department of Health and Human Services COVID-19 dashboard, transformed and prepared for analysis using SAS coding language. Clusters were identified though SaTScan software using a space-time permutation model. The model identified 5 different clusters related …

Ligand Effects On Electronic, Magnetic, And Catalytic Properties Of Clusters And Cluster Assemblies, Dinesh Bista 9288522
Theses and Dissertations
Ligands commonly protect metallic clusters against reacting with outside reactants. However, ligands can also be used to control the redox properties enabling the formation of super donors/acceptors that can donate/accept multiple electrons. This thesis focuses on how the ligands can be used to control the electronic and magnetic features of clusters and ligand stabilized cluster-based assemblies, leading to nano pn junctions with directed transport, the possibility of light-harvesting, and catalysts for cross-coupling reactions. The thesis addresses three distinct classes of clusters and their applications. The first class of cluster “metal chalcogen clusters” is the central idea of the thesis focused …
Phase Clusters And Chimeras In Networks Of Kuramoto Oscillators With Inertia, Barrett N. Brister
Phase Clusters And Chimeras In Networks Of Kuramoto Oscillators With Inertia, Barrett N. Brister
Mathematics Dissertations
Modeling cooperative dynamics using networks of phase oscillators is a common practice for a wide spectrum of biological networks. Patterns of synchronized clusters are some of the most prevalent instances of such cooperative behavior, manifesting themselves in ways similar to groups of neurons firing together during epileptic seizures or Parkinson's tremors. Despite significant interest, the emergence and hysteretic transitions between stable clusters in oscillator networks have still not been fully understood. In particular, the celebrated Kuramoto model of phase oscillators is known to exhibit multiple spatio-temporal patterns, including co-existing clusters of synchrony and chimera states in which some oscillators form …

Formation Pathways In Brightest Cluster Galaxies: Measuring The Distribution Of Ages, Metallicities, And Hydrodynamics Of Stellar Populations, Priscilla E. Holguin West
Physics
Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) are the most massive galaxies in the local universe and have had the full age of the universe to build. This makes their formation and evolution history particularly interesting as they offer a glimpse at potential evolutionary pathways for younger systems. We present the radial profile of ages, metallicities, and preliminary classification of companions to 23 BCGs observed using the SparsePak instrument on WIYN by running the STARLIGHT stellar population synthesis models. This analysis of the BCGs’ stellar populations is done by separating each BCG into different regions, and preliminary results of the stellar populations for …

Clustering And Classifying Geophysical Rock Properties Of The San Andreas Fault, Jared Bryan
Physics Capstone Projects
Borehole geophysical data provide important in situ observations for identifying and characterizing geologic and structural features in the subsurface. We perform an unsupervised classification of geophysical logs from the Sand Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) borehole in order to define intervals of distinct geophysical properties. We focus on borehole geophysical data collected during Phase 3 drilling operations from 3.0-3.3 km measured depth, which encompasses the active trace of the San Andreas Fault. We use dimensionality reduction to increase the interpretability of the retrieved clusters, and we compare the performance of distance- and density-based clustering techniques. K-means clustering produces highly …

Zinc–Phosphorus Clusters For Solution Synthesis Of Zinc Phosphide Nanoparticles, Kyungseop Lee
Zinc–Phosphorus Clusters For Solution Synthesis Of Zinc Phosphide Nanoparticles, Kyungseop Lee
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Synthesis of zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) nanoparticles is an emerging topic of investigation as Zn3P2 is a candidate material for the next generation solar cells. Despite the early discovery of its favorable electronic properties that are well-suited for photovoltaic applications, a major focus of synthetic strategy was with vapor/chemical deposition methods. Solution methods with greater control over size, crystal structure and composition at a lower production cost, has been underdeveloped in comparison. In this context, this thesis describes the synthesis, characterization and reactivity of zinc phosphido clusters: [Zn2(μ-PPh2)2(PPh …
A Foundational Study Of A New Synthetic Method Of Metal Carbonyl Clusters, Miles Shaun Millard
A Foundational Study Of A New Synthetic Method Of Metal Carbonyl Clusters, Miles Shaun Millard
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
“Traditional” Metal Carbonyl Clusters (MCCs) contain a framework of multiple metal atoms bound together through formal metal-metal (M-M) bonds. Current methods of synthesis result in different cluster sizes and lack a method to control growth. This project proposes a new method of MCC synthesis to build larger structures utilizing secondary non-covalent interactions to develop “non-traditional” MCCs. The N,N’-diarylurea moiety is a strong hydrogen bond donor/acceptor that can induce self-assembly into larger secondary structures. The union of metal carbonyl and urea chemistry provides a potential method of “non-traditional” MCC synthesis. This proof of concept experiment will elucidate foundational information such …

Canadian cities have experienced an increase of immigrants, more notably, from Nigeria and Ethiopia. Both groups have settled in Canadian cities to improve their overall Quality of Life (QOL). Areas such as education, employment, safety, and housing conditions were top priorities in choosing a new location to live. Studies, however, show a large proportion of immigrants from Nigeria and Ethiopia have settled in regions that contradict their desires and actually obtain a ‘high’ standard of quality of life. The research findings show both groups have settled in areas with high unemployment rates; highly educated populates with lower-paying jobs; and lower …
