Exploring Students' Perceptions And Performance On Predict-Observe-Explain Tasks In High School Chemistry Laboratory, Praveen Vadapally May 2014

Exploring Students' Perceptions And Performance On Predict-Observe-Explain Tasks In High School Chemistry Laboratory, Praveen Vadapally

Dissertations

This study sought to understand the impact of gender and reasoning level on students’ perceptions and performances of Predict-Observe-Explain (POE) laboratory tasks in a high school chemistry laboratory. Several literature reviews have reported that students at all levels have not developed the specific knowledge and skills that were expected from their laboratory work. Studies conducted over the last several decades have found that boys tend to be more successful than girls in science and mathematics courses. However, some recent studies have suggested that girls may be reducing this gender gap. This gender difference is the focal point of this research …

Development And Evaluation Of A Thermochemistry Concept Inventory For College-Level General Chemistry, David A. Wren Aug 2013

Development And Evaluation Of A Thermochemistry Concept Inventory For College-Level General Chemistry, David A. Wren

Dissertations

The research presented in this dissertation culminated in a 10-item Thermochemistry Concept Inventory (TCI). The development of the TCI can be divided into two main phases: qualitative studies and quantitative studies. Both phases focused on the primary stakeholders of the TCI, college–level general chemistry instructors and students. Each phase was designed to collect evidence for the validity of the interpretations and uses of TCI testing data. A central use of TCI testing data is to identify student conceptual misunderstandings, which are represented as incorrect options of multiple– choice TCI items. Therefore, quantitative and qualitative studies focused heavily on collecting evidence …

Design, Development, And Psychometric Analysis Of A General, Organic, And Biological Chemistry Topic Inventory Based On The Identified Main Chemistry Topics Relevant To Nursing Clinical Practice, Corina E. Brown Aug 2013

Design, Development, And Psychometric Analysis Of A General, Organic, And Biological Chemistry Topic Inventory Based On The Identified Main Chemistry Topics Relevant To Nursing Clinical Practice, Corina E. Brown

Dissertations

This two-stage study focused on the undergraduate nursing course that covers topics in general, organic, and biological (GOB) chemistry. In the first stage, the central objective was to identify the main concepts of GOB chemistry relevant to the clinical practice of nursing. The collection of data was based on open-ended interviews of both nursing and chemistry teaching faculty as well as practicing nurses. From the resulting interviews, three themes emerged: topics that were Important--had a direct application in nursing clinical practice; topics that were Foundational--not directly important for nursing clinical practice but facilitated the understanding of the important topics; and …

Organic Chemistry Preconceptions And Their Correlation To Student Success, Jodie T. Wasacz May 2010

Organic Chemistry Preconceptions And Their Correlation To Student Success, Jodie T. Wasacz

Dissertations

When general chemistry students register for organic chemistry, they often have a negative connotation associated with the topic. It has been observed that students talk as if they are experts in what organic chemistry is and exactly how hard it is when many of them have had very little background on the subject. Some students do not even know what topics organic chemistry encompasses. By establishing a framework of where their preconceptions come from and what they are, instructors, will have a better understanding of how to address preconceptions when beginning an organic chemistry course, or perhaps even before. Furthermore, …
