Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Introduction: The choice of open access (OA) or non-open access (non-OA) publishing model is a serious concern and challenge for authors and journals. Therefore, the present study aimed to review the scientific literature related to the challenges and opportunities of the OA publishing model compared to subscription-based and hybrid publishing models.
Methods: The present study is a narrative review. Articles were searched in various databases such as Scopus and Web of Science (WoS), and articles concerning the research topic were reviewed.
Results: OA challenges were divided into five general categories: 1. Providing publishing fees 2. Fewer citations to OA articles …

Creating An Accessible Campus Environment, Megan Parker
Creating An Accessible Campus Environment, Megan Parker
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This project consists of a series of journalistic articles pertaining to the level of accessibility for current students, faculty, and/or visitors with physical disabilities and/or impairments at The University of Akron. Journalistic articles were selected as a method of investigating and increasing awareness of accessibility in the given situation. Interviews were conducted with members of the campus and those, in addition to press releases, were used as the basis of the content within each article. The conclusion drawn from this journalistic inquiry is that while the level of accessibility at The University of Akron is not optimal for current students, …

Wills Eye Hospital Papers
Background: The problem of access to medical information, particularly in low-income countries, has been under discussion for many years. Although a number of developments have occurred in the last decade (e.g., the open access (OA) movement and the website Sci-Hub), everyone agrees that these difficulties still persist very widely, mainly due to the fact that paywalls still limit access to approximately 75% of scholarly documents. In this study, we compare the accessibility of recent full text articles in the field of ophthalmology in 27 established institutions located worldwide.
Methods: A total of 200 references from articles were retrieved using the …

The Semantics Of Article Acquisition, Emily G. Renie
The Semantics Of Article Acquisition, Emily G. Renie
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
Accurately using articles has consistently been a difficult task for English language learners as articles are often treated as solely grammatical forms rather than also recognizing as representatives of complex semantic properties. This paper aims to synthesize individual research on semantic factors which influence article acquisition and explore how they interact with each other. This paper especially focuses on how native and second language speakers of English acquire and understand the concepts of definiteness and specificity and explores these features within the framework of Chomsky’s theory of Universal Grammar. This paper examines the Fluctuating Hypothesis (FH) and its use as …
Article Use Of English Learners Classified By The Givenness Hierarchy, Elizabeth Claessens
Article Use Of English Learners Classified By The Givenness Hierarchy, Elizabeth Claessens
Culminating Projects in TESL
The following research was conducted to understand the use of English articles in referential noun phrases (RNPs) by students from Nepal. English articles, “a/an” and “the”, are widely known to be one of the most difficult aspects of English to learn for second language learners of English. This thesis examines the article use of language learners by using the Givenness Hierarchy Framework, an implicational hierarchy of cognitive statuses proposed by Gundel, Hedberg, and Zacharski (1993). The data used for this study were written samples of students from Nepal, who had newly entered a university in the Midwest, who took a …
