Eating Disorders In Hispanic Females Living In The Us: A Review Of Literature, Yesenia P. Stephens, Natalia Miles
Eating Disorders In Hispanic Females Living In The Us: A Review Of Literature, Yesenia P. Stephens, Natalia Miles
Research Day
INTRODUCTION: According to the United States Census, Hispanics make up 19.1% of the total population, making it the nation’s largest racial or ethnic minority. Of interest, nearly 22% of Hispanic adults report having a mental illness, yet only 36% receive mental health services compared to non-Hispanic Whites (52%).2
OBJECTIVES: There is limited research on diagnosing eating disorders in Hispanic females living in the US. To understand this disparity, the aims of this study are to 1) gain understanding of what psychological constructs are unique to the experience of Hispanic females living in the US and 2) determine the risk factors …

In And Through The Body: A Quantitative Exploration Of Embodiment In Eating Disorders, Lauren Zaniboni
PsyD Program in Clinical Psychology Doctoral Dissertations (New England)
The field of clinical psychology has long privileged cognitive and affective experience and information over that which is stored in, and communicated by, the body (Caldwell, 2018; Young, 2006). Despite the profound and complex web of interactions between mind and body in EDs, this subspecialty has been no exception. The need for improvements in eating disorder (ED) treatment outcomes is well documented and transtheoretically accepted. Current practice guidelines for the treatment of adult EDs recommend the utilization of cognitive, behavioral, and interpersonal strategies to target problematic thinking and deficits in emotion regulation that are thought to fuel ED behaviors (American …

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
In terms of metabolism, eating disorders manifest in two extreme directions: overnutrition, which can lead to obesity, and malnutrition, which can result in underweight or even starvation. Both extremes compromise the quality of life. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5 (DSM-5) standard, eating disorders affect up to 17.9% of young women and 2.4% of young men. Although eating disorders are primarily defined as mental disorders rather than metabolic disorders, they are intertwined with complex emotions and sensory perceptions. However, in contemporary animal research related to eating disorders and feeding behaviors, the majority of neuroscientists still examine …
Implications Of California State Standards In Relation To Disordered Eating For School Aged Children, Jessica De Mott
Implications Of California State Standards In Relation To Disordered Eating For School Aged Children, Jessica De Mott
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Food is a part of people’s lives, even when it is not acknowledged. It is distinctly tied to various cultures, ethnicities, and religions; with elements of restriction and gluttony abundant. Then, there is the complication of modern nutrition and health education that is taught in American, and more specifically in Californian schools. But, the education received on this issue has failed some students. Many school aged children reported that they experienced disordered eating, and learning content has further exacerbated this issue. This senior capstone research will examine the implications of California State Standards in relation to disordered eating for school …

Editorial: Physiology And Pathology Of Neuroglia, Daniel Reyes-Haro, Alejandro Lopez-Juarez, Adrián Rodríguez-Contreras
Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Neuroglia is the largest population of cells in the brain and participates in formation, maintenance, and modulation of synaptic circuits. This heterogenous group includes macroglia (astroglia and oligodendroglia) and microglia. Neurons and neuroglia form assemblies that potentiate the cognitive capability of the brain. In this topic, nine articles highlight structural and functional roles of neuroglia in brain physiology, which is fundamental to better understand the biology of neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases.
Our understanding of brain connectivity evolves rapidly and the cytoarchitecture of underexplored brain regions such as the cerebellum need to be revisited (De Zeeuw et al., 2021). …

Natural Variation In Host Feeding Behaviors Impacts Host Disease And Pathogen Transmission Potential, Alaina C. Pfenning-Butterworth, Rachel E. Vetter, Jessica L. Hite
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Animals ranging from mosquitoes to humans often vary their feeding behavior when infected or merely exposed to pathogens. These so-called “sickness behaviors” are part of the innate immune response with many consequences, including avoiding orally transmitted pathogens. Fully understanding the role of this ubiquitous behavior in host defense and pathogen evolution requires a quantitative account of its impact on host and pathogen fitness across environmentally relevant contexts. Here, we use a zooplankton host and fungal pathogen as a case study to ask if infection-mediated feeding behaviors vary across pathogen exposure levels and natural genetic variation in susceptibility to infection. Then, …
Outpatient Physical Therapists’ Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors Regarding Eating Disorder Screening, Esther Thomas, Morgan Russo, Kara Martin, Kristen Karnish, Audrey Campbell
Outpatient Physical Therapists’ Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors Regarding Eating Disorder Screening, Esther Thomas, Morgan Russo, Kara Martin, Kristen Karnish, Audrey Campbell
Student Research Poster Presentations 2023
Background & Purpose: Approximately 9% of Americans will have an eating disorder in their lifetime1 and these disorders can impact the recovery of patients receiving physical therapy services. Physical therapists (PT) should be aware if a patient has a history of, or current history of an eating disorder or nutritional deficiency as these can negatively impact a patient’s participation and optimal functioning. Minimal research has been performed related to physical therapy and eating disorders. Determining outpatient physical therapists’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors towards eating disorders and if they are screening for eating disorders is the first step in furthering research …
Eating Disorders: Barriers To Peer And Self Recognition And The Ability To Seek Or Give Help, Savannah Mcvey
Eating Disorders: Barriers To Peer And Self Recognition And The Ability To Seek Or Give Help, Savannah Mcvey
Honors College Theses
A lack of knowledge concerning eating disorders has been found to play a major role in self-recognition, peer recognition, and barriers to seeking treatment at all. More specifically, straight men were more often not able to identify these issues in themselves or others. Theories that have been presented involve the image of eating disorders being a “woman’s issue” and a possible obsession with weight lifting and changing one’s body to take on a more masculine build. Combatting this issue needs to begin in the form of basic education on college campuses due to the prevalence in this particular age group. …
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Family-Based Treatment Education On Provider's Knowledge, Anticipatory Use, And Attitudes Who Treat Adolescent Patients Diagnosed With Anorexia Nervosa, Treven Back
DNP Projects
Background. Anorexia Nervosa is a chronic, disabling, and costly disease with a higher mortality rate than any other psychiatric illness. Because of the need for medical, psychiatric, and nutritional care, treatment is complex. The current literature supports Family-Based Treatment as a first-line treatment for adolescent patients diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa. However, a gap exists between translating family-based treatments into clinical practice. Literature shows that education and understanding providers' attitudes and beliefs are the first steps to successfully implementing family-based treatments.
Purpose. This DNP project aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a family-based treatment education intervention on providers' attitudes, knowledge, and …

Anorexic Behaviors And Spirituality In Medieval Holy Women, Amanda Reece
AWE (A Woman’s Experience)
This body of mine remains without any food, without even a drop of water: in such sweet physical tortures as I never at any time endured; insomuch that my life hangs by a thread.” At only thirty three years old Saint Catherine of Siena lay in an almost constant state of hallucination, unable to stand, and on the verge of death. Saint Catherine lived the majority of her life in a near constant state of starvation as a form of suffering for religious worship, but four months before her death, she expressed she had lost the ability to take water …
Eating Disorders: Creating A New Standard, Bree Carlton
Eating Disorders: Creating A New Standard, Bree Carlton
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Eating disorders are perhaps one of the most misunderstood diseases. Unlike other diseases, there has never been an epidemic of eating disorders. Rather, there has been an ebb and flow in the awareness surrounding them and the support for those that suffer. This research details eating disorders and the stereotypes regarding who falls victim to them, causes, the effect society has on eating disorders, and the effect disordered eating has on society. This study assessed the relationship sociocultural factors like culture, social media, and age have on eating disorders. Also assessed was the relationship between biological factors like gender and …
Movement In Meal Time: A Movement Observation Assessment For Individuals With Eating Disorders, Ellery Mills
Movement In Meal Time: A Movement Observation Assessment For Individuals With Eating Disorders, Ellery Mills
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This paper advocates for the use of dance/movement therapy (DMT) as part of treatment for individuals with eating disorders, while also proposing a DMT based method of assessment to be used with clients during meal times. This assessment, based on elements of DMT movement observation techniques, works as a tool to analyze the client’s consumption behavior and level of risk, thus providing insight for treatment planning, goal setting, and themes for dance/movement therapy interventions. The proposed assessment was applied with an at-risk adolescent female during a lunch period in a school setting. The results of the assessment were then further …

Medical Necessity Of Residential Treatment For Anorexia: Can Parity Be Achieved?, Abbey Derechin
Medical Necessity Of Residential Treatment For Anorexia: Can Parity Be Achieved?, Abbey Derechin
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
This Note examines the statutory landscape of mental health parity in the United States. The lens of this Note is through the mental illness of anorexia. Parity laws mandate analogous limitations between mental and physical illness. Therefore, because anorexia has many physical manifestations, it serves as a nice juxtaposition to physical illnesses. This Note will argue for broad interpretation of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) through comparative analysis of counterpart statute, the California Mental Health Parity Act (CMHPA). It will explore how courts have interpreted the CMHPA broadly to suggest that the MHPAEA should be interpreted …

To The Bone And Back, Noelle Christine Thomas
Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-
To the Bone and Back, a memoir by Noelle Thomas explores Thomas’s college journey while struggling with mental health conditions. To the Bone and Back primarily focuses on how anxiety, depression, and eating disorders can impact friendships. Thomas documents her journey through college and grad school in four parts. In a way, Thomas’s memoir is a story of self-assembly.
Part one, made up of poems, narratives, letter excerpts, YouTube transcripts, and text messages, mirrors the clutter and chaos of Thomas’s brain at that time. Part one establishes the friendship between the main characters: Thomas and Jenna.
Part two begins to …
The Implementation Of Disordered Eating Interventions In Institutions Of Higher Education, Hannah Thalberg
The Implementation Of Disordered Eating Interventions In Institutions Of Higher Education, Hannah Thalberg
Scripps Senior Theses
Eating disorders are incredibly debilitating, dehumanizing, and detrimental mental illnesses that affect diverse populations around the world. Disturbing over 28.8 million Americans alone per year, eating disorders remain the deadliest mental illness. Yet, there exists a gap between the academic and medical literature around eating disorders, and the societally crafted perspective towards eating disorders. While medically, eating disorders are crippling and life-threatening, eating disorders are socially praised and accepted as a norm. Not only are eating disorders vastly regularized in society, but they are also glamorized from the broad media saturation of Eurocentric thin idealization. These ideals are encapsulated by …
Physiological Effects Of Activity-Based Anorexia In Female Rats And An Overview Of Eating Disorders, Madelyn Uyemura
Physiological Effects Of Activity-Based Anorexia In Female Rats And An Overview Of Eating Disorders, Madelyn Uyemura
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The aim of this thesis is to bring AN to the foreground of conversation both in a scientific and sociological framework. Nearly 40 million Americans suffer from anxiety disorders, which is characterized by the feeling of a loss of control. In some cases, another disorder called anorexia nervosa (AN) can codevelop. AN is characterized by a refusal, and inability, to maintain a healthy body weight. Some suffering from anxiety may restrict caloric intake and increase exercise to cope with stress. This results in extreme caloric deprivation. AN can be modeled in rats using an activity-based anorexia (ABA) method. In …
Mind Over Matter: How A Dancer’S Mind Affects The Physical Body, Kayla Johnson
Mind Over Matter: How A Dancer’S Mind Affects The Physical Body, Kayla Johnson
Honors College Theses
This thesis is an exploration of how a dancer’s mind can affect its physical body. Undoubtedly, there is a strong connection in every human between their mind and their body, but for an artist whose entire career depends on the ability of their body to create movement, there must be extra emphasis placed on their mental health care. Dance is just as mentally demanding as it is physically. To begin this project I collected research articles relating to injury, anxiety, self-confidence, body image and eating disorders performed on dancers. I noticed throughout my research that there was a lack of …
Orthorexia: When Healthy Eating Becomes Problematic, Courtney R. Retzlaff
Orthorexia: When Healthy Eating Becomes Problematic, Courtney R. Retzlaff
Counselor Education Capstones
Counselors must help clients differentiate between healthy eating and disordered eating. Thus, this review of the literature examines when healthy eating becomes dangerous, and in some cases, life threatening by comparing a condition known as orthorexia to identified mental health disorders. Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is defined as, “a pathological obsession with proper nutrition that is characterized by a restrictive diet, ritualized patterns of eating, and rigid avoidance of foods believed to be unhealthy or impure” (Koven & Abry, 2015, p.385). Orthorexia is not included in the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) as a disorder. Even so, …

Picky Eating In Children: Associations With Iq And Executive Functioning, Ara Nazmiyal
Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses
Picky eating is an under-researched behavior in children. The current study aims to assess what behaviors correlate with picky eating to better understand potential risk factors for Anorexia Nervosa. 111 children were evaluated at 5 and 6 years old, and a subset was evaluated again at 7 and 8 years old (n=36). Executive function and IQ were evaluated using parent reports and behavioral measures at baseline. Picky eating was reported by a parent questionnaire. Results showed deficits in shifting to be a predictor of higher picky eating behaviors at ages 5-6 years. Additionally, children who were reported extremely picky eaters …

To understand the current use of exercise in outpatient eating disorder rehabilitation centers, a survey was conducted. The two major research questions covered in this survey included ""Are outpatient eating disorder rehabilitation programs currently incorporating exercise into their treatment program? and ""Are outpatient eating disorder rehabilitation programs currently incorporating individualized exercise for clients in the treatment programs?"" Three results were collected from the survey analysis and addressed the research questions. These three results indicated the use …
Okay, Kassie H. Bohannon
Okay, Kassie H. Bohannon
Honors College Theses
Okay is a minimalistic literary fiction short story cycle that examines the lives of Collin and Charlotte Grearson, two children who grow up with a working class status in a broken home, and their journeys to adulthood as they both respectively cope with their underlying mental health problems. The stories in Okay exemplify how refusal to seek help for a mental health problem, or the lack of support from others even if the illness is communicated, can cause a disconnect between family members, the worsening of the illness itself, and the eventual possibility of fatal conclusions. Okay is composed as …

Appetite for palatable foods may impact eating-related behaviors in everyday life. The present study evaluated the real-world predictive validity of the Power of Food Scale (PFS) using ecological momentary assessment (EMA).
Methods
30 women who reported binge eating completed the PFS and related measures. Subsequently, during a 14-day assessment period, participants completed five daily EMA surveys of appetite and binge eating via text message and web.
Results
Results of generalized estimating equations showed that higher PFS scores were associated with higher momentary levels of hunger, eagerness to eat, and urge to eat but were unrelated to fullness, preoccupation with …
The Experiences Of Women Who Have A Child Diagnosed With An Eating Disorder: A Narrative Inquiry, Jennifer Scarborough
The Experiences Of Women Who Have A Child Diagnosed With An Eating Disorder: A Narrative Inquiry, Jennifer Scarborough
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Eating disorders (EDs) are serious, life-threatening illnesses that typically occur in adolescence. Immediate intervention is necessary in order to interrupt the associated behaviours. Typically, adolescents struggling with EDs minimize the severity the illness has on their psychological and physiological wellbeing. For this reason, family involvement in the intervention is strongly recommended. Additionally, family involvement has shown to increase the likelihood of better outcomes. Parents are typically tasked with the responsibility of making and monitoring meals and/or interrupting compensatory behaviours. These tasks often lead to high conflict. Despite the importance of parental involvement, predominantly, it is mothers who fulfill the intensive …

When Ice Isn’T Slippery, Alyssa Witbeck Alexander
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis is the start of what I envision to be a full-length memoir that addresses themes of perfectionism and sacrifice. I begin with an introductory chapter, then move into three chapters that highlight different elements of my life that are affected by these themes. I begin exploring childhood, passion for figure skating, perfectionism, Mormonism, and my first romantic relationship. The next chapter shows ways in which this commitment to perfectionism and sacrifice results in a severe eating disorder, and the ways in which that affects me, my family, and my relationship with figure skating. The final chapter chronologically covers …

Exploring The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire, Clinical Impairment Assessment, And Autism Quotient To Identify Eating Disorder Vulnerability: A Cluster Analysis, Natalia Stewart Rosenfield, Erik Linstead
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Eating disorders are very complicated and many factors play a role in their manifestation. Furthermore, due to the variability in diagnosis and symptoms, treatment for an eating disorder is unique to the individual. As a result, there are numerous assessment tools available, which range from brief survey questionnaires to in-depth interviews conducted by a professional. One of the many benefits to using machine learning is that it offers new insight into datasets that researchers may not previously have, particularly when compared to traditional statistical methods. The aim of this paper was to employ k-means clustering to explore the Eating Disorder …

The Multidisciplinary Approach In The Treatment Of Eating Disorders, Laura Brown
Nutrition Masters Projects
This purpose of this project was to take an in-depth review of the multi-disciplinary approach in the treatment of eating disorders from both a literature and narrative interview perspective. Eating disorders are the second deadliest mental health disorder and affect people of all genders, races, ethnicities, ages, and sexual orientations. It is estimated that 70 million people worldwide have an eating disorder, with up to 30 million in the United States alone. The etiology of eating disorders are multi-factorial and include genetic, biologic, individual, family, psychological, and socio-cultural factors and as such require a multi-disciplinary treatment approach. We conducted video …
