President's Notes, Joseph C. Strasser
President's Notes, Joseph C. Strasser
Naval War College Review
On these pages in the Summer 1991 edition of the Naval War College Review, I offered several thoughts addressing the important contributions of the Navy-Marine Corps team to the Desert Shield and Desert Storm operations subsequent to the August 1990 invasion of Kuwait by Iran. I concluded by noting that while the threat has changed recently, and instability rather than the Soviet Union appears to be our most immediate concern, there should be little doubt in anyone's mind chat our country's present and future leaders will continue to rely on naval forces in times of international turmoil.

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)
This article explores the role of accounting professionals in the emergence of the first set of accounting standards - Accounting Standards for Business Enterprises (ASBE) - in China between 1978 and 1992. Based on a variety of sources drawn from the archives of Chinese language accounting textbooks and highly ranked academic journals, this article reveals how accounting professionals adapted accounting thoughts and practice to fit the demands of the prevailing political ideologies, which facilitated the social conditions essential for the development of ASBE. Drawing on theoretical perspectives on the interplay between accounting and its social context, as pronounced and advocated …

Analysis of ground-based high-resolution solar FTIR absorption spectra from four sites was performed to determine trends and variability in OCS columns over the period 1992–2004. The sites were Wollongong, Australia (34.45° S, 150.88° E), Lauder, New Zealand (45.0° S, 169.7° E), Arrival Heights, Antarctica (77.8° S, 166.6° E) and Mauna Loa, Hawaii (19.5° N, 155.6° W). Small but significant long-term trends of −0.18±0.02% yr-1 above Hawaii, −0.30±0.12% yr-1 above Wollongong and −0.29±0.14% yr-1 above Lauder, were seen. No significant trend was seen above Arrival Heights. A large peak-to-peak seasonal difference observed in 1996–1997 above Wollongong and reported …

Development, Progress, And Accomplishments Of Institutional Assessment At Western Washington University 1990 To 1996, Joseph E. Trimble, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Richard Frye, Carl Simpson
Office of Institutional Effectiveness
Report 1996-02: Development, Progress, and Accomplishments of Institutional Assessment at Western Washington University-1990 to 1996 The fall of 1996 marked six years of assessment efforts at Western. In December, 1996, the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing produced a six-year retrospective of its work. The original purpose of the Washington State's assessment movement was to improve the quality of programs and provide performance accountability. These basic tenets have changed little in six years. Moreover, assessment did not just begin at Western in 1990. Before the statewide mandate for assessment, Western was already carrying out assessment activities: for instance, end-of-program assessment …

Spouse abuse is a significant social problem that has recently received considerable attention by family researchers. National studies have estimated the incidence of spouse abuse in the United States, but few studies have been conducted at the state or local level.

It is posited that victims of low socioeconomic status and victims of severe physical abuse are more likely to return to their own home after …

Executive Summary: The following report provides written and tabular summaries of student responses to the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Student Information Survey for Western Washington University's 1992 in-coming freshmen class. The CIRP Survey is used nationwide to gather normative data on the characteristics, attitudes, values, educational achievements, and future goals of in-coming freshmen, and has been used at WWU since 1971. Currently, the CIRP is administered to WWU freshmen annually. The 1992 CIRP was administered to freshmen only a few months after the highly publicized Rodney King verdict, and certain responses reflected concerns with racial issues. For instance, the …
