Holidays And Holy Days: The Significance Of The Pagan/Christian Calendar In The French Vulgate Account Of King Arthur And His Round Table, Mark Lee Patterson Dec 2017

Holidays And Holy Days: The Significance Of The Pagan/Christian Calendar In The French Vulgate Account Of King Arthur And His Round Table, Mark Lee Patterson

Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology

The Merlin section of the thirteenth-century Old French Vulgate Cycle focuses on Arthur’s birth and the now iconic events that accompany his divine selection and coronation as King of Britain. A close reading of this account reveals that significant story events usually coincide with religious holidays. The transition from the pagan to the Christian calendar and the symbolic impact of the calendar on the early formation of the round table in the French Vulgate Cycle has been mostly overlooked by scholars. In this paper, I address this lacuna by examining the role the calendar plays in the development of characters …

Thanksgiving Monopoly Night, Carrigan Price Dec 2017

Thanksgiving Monopoly Night, Carrigan Price

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

We go to my Grandma Judy’s house and we eat stuffing and more pie and then everybody goes home except for the cousins that are 12 to 18, well 12 to 20 and we play a game of Monopoly that sometimes goes until 5 in the morning! And we just go until somebody wins the game. We play the board game and play house rules. We do it individually so like there’s no teams and one person is the banker and one person gives out the properties and everybody else just takes care of their piece. After we finish, we …

Columbus Day, Kristie Hinckley

Children's Book and Media Review

Columbus Day is an informational text that helps young students learn the background about the holiday we call Columbus Day. Christopher Columbus was an explorer born in Italy. He was commissioned to find new routes to China and Italy. In 1492, he arrived in America and every year on the second Monday in October we celebrate that monumental event. He led the way for many Europeans to come to America. Franklin D. Roosevelt is the president who made Columbus Day a national holiday.

Deep Fried Turkey, Carrigan Price Nov 2017

Deep Fried Turkey, Carrigan Price

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

My family celebrates Thanksgiving every year at our house, we don’t switch off and go to other people’s Thanksgivings or whatever. Every year Thanksgiving is at our house for the solid reason that we deep-fry our turkeys. I can’t remember the exact degree, but you get all of the oil, and basically you have to put cardboard down because it can spill and that will stain your driveway- if it’s windy, you need to take that into account. You never deep-fry a turkey inside because you’ll start a fire. Umm basically you check it every once in a while by …

"Holiday Scramble- Our Family Version Of Chex- Mix", Alexis Robb

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

I’ve had scramble every holiday for as long as I can remember, it’s not Christmas without it. (Pauses to reflect) You make it in a big bowl used for canning and it makes a lot. It takes almost all day for us to make it because it makes so much, I have memories of our family making it and watching White Christmas, that was our favorite movie to watch together. (Laughs, from the memories) I love it because it makes the house smell so good, and it’s a good snack.

Groundhog's Day Off, Carlie Smith

Children's Book and Media Review

Disgruntled by his community’s lack of interest in anything in his life other than weather predictions, Groundhog decides to take a day off right. He heads to the spa and contemplates a time when reporters will ask questions like, “Have you seen any good movies lately?” or “Do you like mushrooms on your pizza?” The town is forced to hold tryouts for a replacement animal. But no applicants have the right combination of schedule, size, and showiness that is necessary for the job. But when Groundhog hears a report about how special he truly is, he rushes back just in …

Battle For Dominion Over Time: War Of The Calendars In Thailand, Ronald J. Brown Jan 2017

Battle For Dominion Over Time: War Of The Calendars In Thailand, Ronald J. Brown

New York School for Career and Applied Studies (NYSCAS) Publications and Research

My annual January “get out of cold New York City” vacation was effectively ruined in the lounge of the Unification Theological Seminary. Shortly before I left for Thailand at the end of December 2016 I was describing my plans for a month in sunny Thailand when a student said “Oh, you’ll be in Bangkok for New Year’s. That should be wild!” Another student chimed in “And the Chinese New Year’s too!” “Double the fun and double the pleasure,” I responded, and everyone laughed.

The comment that ruined my vacation and turned it from a month of cheap red wine, beaches, …

Jennifer Eastman Att Ebery. Pole Raising And Speech Making: Modalities Of Swedish American Summer Celebration., Christopher Oscarson

The Bridge

In a conversation with a colleague several years ago, I was surprised to find out that we were both exactly one quarter Swedish—I through my paternal grandfather and he through his maternal grandfather. This was unexpected because based on his appearance, family traditions, and last name, I had never anticipated that we might share this common ancestral heritage. Whereas my family has tended to emphasize its connections to Swedish culture, his has focused on links to Japan. There are good reasons that account for the differences in our families’ respective cultural identification, but the variability of how we each see …
