Use Of English Articles By Korean Students, Minhui Choi Dec 2017

Use Of English Articles By Korean Students, Minhui Choi

Culminating Projects in English

Correct use of English articles is a challenge for many English learners. English learners of various native language backgrounds make frequent mistakes when it comes to choosing appropriate articles to denote definiteness in English. Korean language falls into a language group that lacks an overt article system, which causes many Korean English learners to struggle with English articles. This study investigates the use of English articles by Korean students who are studying in an American college using English as a second language. An oral translation task of a Korean story into English, which involved voice recording, transcribing those recordings and …

Dialogue And "Dialect": Character Speech In American Fiction, Carly Overfelt

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the linguistic construction of race and place in turn-of-the-century American novels and short stories. Literary analyses of character speech continue to reinforce the old dichotomy of Standard versus nonstandard/dialectal English. I challenge the ideology of Standard English in my readings of works by Mark Twain, Charles Chesnutt, Sarah Orne Jewett, and little-known Cherokee author, Ora V. Eddleman Reed, among others. I argue that these texts create their own standards that interact with (and sometimes resist) the language ideology of their time. By analyzing all variation, rather than only what has been traditionally viewed as “dialect,” I reveal …

She will describe strategies for using texts such as Your Voice is All I Hear (2015), Thirteen Reasons Why (2007), and The Impossible Knife of Memory (2014) to analyze and critique representations of mental illness in young adult literature. Drawing on research by Koss & Teale (2009) and Richmond (2014), this presenter will help session attendees interrogate “the power of language choices” and “become empowered to confront the stigma associated with mental illness and confront bullying” (p. 24).

Foreword To D.W. Robertson, Jr., Uncollected Essays, Paul Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

During the late summer of 1992, I received a call from Darryl Gless, a professor of Renaissance literature at the University of North Carolina and my former student, asking me if it would be all right if he and other people looking after the literary remains of D. W. Robertson would send me a package of published and unpublished articles that Robertson had left behind upon his death in July of that year. Gless had been a friend of Dr. and Mrs. Robertson in Chapel Hill, visiting with them frequently while trying a bit to look after their well-being in …

The Difference Between English And Math High School Teachers' Attitudes And Perceptions Toward The Inclusion Of English Language Learner Students, Ashley Sibert Williamson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Within the last 10 years, the United States experienced an influx of non-English speaking students, which challenged teachers, administrators, and other educational stakeholders on how to successfully accommodate these English Language Learners (ELL). This causal-comparative study examined the attitudes and perceptions of secondary English and math teachers in relation to ELL inclusion. Specifically, the study presented the main question of whether there is a difference between English and math teachers’ attitudes and perceptions toward the inclusion of ELLs. Teacher attitudes have been found to play a role in determining student academic achievement; therefore, assessing teacher attitudes toward ELLs could be …

Content Teachers' Perceptions Of Effective Language Teaching Strategies, Alexandra Badger

Culminating Projects in English

This study investigated the perceptions of content teachers about language teaching and serving EL students. Using survey instruments and semi-structured interviews, content teachers were asked to express their beliefs about best language teaching practices. Quantitative data from surveys were analyzed in order to determine where content teachers’ beliefs of language teaching practices coincided or differed with research-based TESL pedagogy. Content and EL teachers were both interviewed in order expand on teachers’ reported perceptions and allow for a comparison between the two population groups. Content teachers’ perceptions of effective teaching practices mostly coincided with educational and TESL theory especially on questions …

An Antidote To War? An Examination Of The Success Of The Once And Future King By T.H. White, Emily L. Ward

HON499 projects

This paper seeks to evaluate the level of success of The Once and Future King by T.H. White. It examines the financial success of the book and its popularity among readers, both immediately upon publication and in later years. It also considers the book within its historical context, during and after World War II, and hypothesizes that the war negatively impacted the success of the book since it has a pacifist agenda. Finally, the paper examines White’s own goals and intentions while writing the book, and whether the book achieved those purposes. In order to study these matters, the text …

Mobility limitations were defined as having a Short Physical Performance Battery score ≤9, and fear of falling by participant report of being somewhat, fairly, or very afraid of falling.
