Portrait Of A Collector: Reflections On An Influential Bibliophile, Meg Miner Oct 2016

Portrait Of A Collector: Reflections On An Influential Bibliophile, Meg Miner

Meg Miner

The purpose of this essay is to bring together disparate information on Myers’ book collecting habits. President Myers used both the objects of his collecting and the intellectual ideas they represent in the course of his presidential responsibilities. This work offers an overview solely of this aspect of Myers’ activities, in both written records and oral histories, and is not an attempt to analyze the entire arc of Myers’ tenure.

The following contains an overview of this project, a summary of collectors’ characteristics, generally, and an exploration of the specific type of collector Myers was based both on documentary …

The Problems Of Deficient Data When Planning For Religious Tourism: An Irish Case Study, Vreny Enongene, Kevin Griffin Oct 2016

The Problems Of Deficient Data When Planning For Religious Tourism: An Irish Case Study, Vreny Enongene, Kevin Griffin

Conference papers

This study stresses the importance of the availability of data and relevant statistics in the advancement of tourism knowledge and the enhancement of visitor experiences (pre-and post-experiences) for those particularly interested in visiting sacred sites, as well as its study. With sacred sites in the Island of Ireland as sites under study. The dearth in data and relevant statistics on religious tourism sites and their facilities, visitor numbers and their activities, management issues, and visitor experiences, at sacred sites in the Ireland of Ireland, although widely acclaimed as a country of saints and scholars, prompted the present investigation.

Can Government-Sponsored Sustainable Agricultural Farming Practices Reduce Land Decay Through Crop Biodiversity Conservation Under Production Uncertainties?, Sakib Mahmud Oct 2016

Can Government-Sponsored Sustainable Agricultural Farming Practices Reduce Land Decay Through Crop Biodiversity Conservation Under Production Uncertainties?, Sakib Mahmud

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Under income uncertainties, agricultural farmers might be influenced by government-sponsored programs that might lead to higher income opportunities by focusing on monoculture at the expense of crop diversification strategy. However, the latter strategy is likely to reduce production uncertainties for agricultural farmers and hence, ensuring sustainable agricultural development in the targeted area. A theoretical model is proposed to understand such possible economic trade-offs between high income-lower crop diversification and lower income-higher crop diversification outcomes resulting from government-sponsored programs and institutions.

Haploinsufficiency Of The Myc Regulator Mtbp Extends Survival And Delays Tumor Development In Aging Mice., Brian C. Grieb, Kelli Boyd, Ramkrishna Mitra, Christine M. Eischen Oct 2016

Haploinsufficiency Of The Myc Regulator Mtbp Extends Survival And Delays Tumor Development In Aging Mice., Brian C. Grieb, Kelli Boyd, Ramkrishna Mitra, Christine M. Eischen

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Alterations of specific genes can modulate aging. Myc, a transcription factor that regulates the expression of many genes involved in critical cellular functions was shown to have a role in controlling longevity. Decreased expression of Myc inhibited many of the deleterious effects of aging and increased lifespan in mice. Without altering Myc expression, reduced levels of Mtbp, a recently identified regulator of Myc, limit Myc transcriptional activity and proliferation, while increased levels promote Myc-mediated effects. To determine the contribution of Mtbp to the effects of Myc on aging, we studied a large cohort of Mtbp heterozygous mice and littermate matched …

Cover Crop Effect On Subsequent Wheat Yield In The Central Great Plains, David C. Nielsen, Drew J. Lyon, Robert K. Higgins, Gary W. Hergert, Johnathon D. Holman, Merle F. Vigil Oct 2016

Cover Crop Effect On Subsequent Wheat Yield In The Central Great Plains, David C. Nielsen, Drew J. Lyon, Robert K. Higgins, Gary W. Hergert, Johnathon D. Holman, Merle F. Vigil

David C. Nielsen

Crop production systems in the water-limited environment of the semiarid central Great Plains may not have potential to profitably use cover crops because of lowered subsequent wheat (Triticum asestivum L.) yields following the cover crop. Mixtures have reportedly shown less yield-reducing effects on subsequent crops than single-species plantings. This study was conducted to determine winter wheat yields following both mixtures and single-species plantings of spring-planted cover crops. The study was conducted at Akron, CO, and Sidney, NE, during the 2012–2013 and 2013–2014 wheat growing seasons under both rainfed and irrigated conditions. Precipitation storage efficiency before wheat planting, wheat water use, …

Virtual Values For Taint And Information Flow Analysis, Prakasam Kannan, Thomas Austin, Mark Stamp, Tim Disney, Cormac Flanagan Oct 2016

Virtual Values For Taint And Information Flow Analysis, Prakasam Kannan, Thomas Austin, Mark Stamp, Tim Disney, Cormac Flanagan

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

Security controls such as taint analysis and information flow analysis can be powerful tools to protect against many common attacks. However, incorporating these controls into a language such as JavaScript is challenging. Native implementations require the support of all JavaScript VMs. Code rewriting requires developers to reason about the entire abstract syntax of JavaScript. In this paper, we demonstrate how virtual values may be used to more easily integrate these security controls. Virtual values provide hooks to alter the behavior of primitive operations, allowing programmers to create the desired security controls in a more declarative fashion, facilitating more rapid prototyping. …

Ontology-Driven Search And Triage: Design Of A Web-Based Visual Interface For Medline, Jonathan Demelo, Paul Parsons, Kamran Sedig

Computer Graphics Technology Faculty Publications

Background: Diverse users need to search health and medical literature to satisfy open-ended goals such as making evidence-based decisions and updating their knowledge. However, doing so is challenging due to at least two major difficulties: (1) articulating information needs using accurate vocabulary and (2) dealing with large document sets returned from searches. Common search interfaces such as PubMed do not provide adequate support for exploratory search tasks.

Objective: Our objective was to improve support for exploratory search tasks by combining two strategies in the design of an interactive visual interface by (1) using a formal ontology to help users build …
