Statistics For Middle And High School Teachers: A Resource For Middle And High School Teachers To Feel Better Prepared To Teach The Common Core State Standards (Ccss) Relating To Statistics, Nanci Kopecky

All Capstone Projects

The purpose of this project is to create a two-day workshop to better prepare middle and high school teachers to teach probability and statistics as required by the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which have broadened the mathematics curriculum to include in depth understanding of probability and statistics. Many teachers are not prepared to address probability and statistics concepts. Research has demonstrated a need for greater professional development and resources for teachers in this area. The two-day workshop will allow teachers to review their knowledge and enhance their understanding of statistics by emphasizing student-centered teaching examples. Technology and/or software will …

Bringing Pacific Bluefin Tuna Back From The Brink: Ensuring The Submission Of Operational Data To The Western And Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, Chris Wold, Mitsuhiko Takahashi, Siwon Park, Viv Fernandes, Sarah Butler

Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law

The Commission of the Convention on the Conservation and Management of Highly Migratory Fish Stocks in the Western Pacific Ocean (WCPFC) manages fish stocks of significant financial and ecological value across an area of the Pacific Ocean comprising 20% of Earth. WCPFC members, however, have disagreed sharply over management measures for tuna, sharks, and other species, in part because some WCPFC members have refused to provide the WCPFC with vessel-specific data, known as operational data, which is needed to manage the stocks sustainably. Despite a legal requirement to submit operational data to the WCPFC, these members, including Japan and Korea, …

Mechanism Design For Land Acquisition., Soumendu Sarkar Dr. Sep 2016

Mechanism Design For Land Acquisition., Soumendu Sarkar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Conversion of land use from agriculture to industry is a typical feature of economic development in many densely populated countries. Large scale construction often requires industry or the government to acquire vast areas of land that are inhabited and often cultivated, by hundreds and even thousands of people. For some landowners, possession signifies power and status in society, while for others, it is the only means for earning a livelihood.Adamopoulos and Restuccia (2014) use data from World Census of Agriculture to show that average farm size in the poorest 20% of countries is 1.6 hectares, while that in the richest …

Addressing The Stem Challenge Through Targeted Teaching : What’S The Evidence?, Dianne Siemon Aug 2016

Addressing The Stem Challenge Through Targeted Teaching : What’S The Evidence?, Dianne Siemon

2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences

Numerous public reports are pointing to the critical importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to Australia’s future, but the number of students studying STEM subjects in senior years is declining, and many students in the primary and middle years of schooling do not have access to the ways of thinking and learning needed to succeed in school mathematics. Research over the past 10 years has established the critical role of multiplicative thinking in building student knowledge and confidence at this level of schooling, but there is a need for an expanded, evidence-based learning and teaching framework to support …

No, We Don’T Just Read Books All Day. Developing The Statistical Narrative/Infographic For Technical Services, Amy B. Parsons

Faculty Bibliography

This poster illustrates the development of statistical narratives for the work that is done in cataloging and technical services. Our work is behind the scenes but we do the technical work that transforms ordinary books into library books with access points for discoverability. Using infographics, tech services staff can illustrate the quality, quantity, and value of our important work in the library.

No, We Don’T Just Read Books All Day… Developing Statistical Narratives/Infographics For Technical Services, Amy B. Parsons

Library Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This poster is an example of the work I have created using cataloging statistics from Sierra, Google Sheets, and Excel. The graphs illustrate the number of books I have cataloged and discarded throughout a span of years. The graphs tell a story with the numbers. This is called a statistical narrative. These stories can be created by any library department and ultimately allow outsiders, and constituents to see the value of the academic library.

A Physiologically Motivated Approach To The Classification Of Natural Sounds Using High Order Sound Statistics, Brian B. Bishop Aug 2016

A Physiologically Motivated Approach To The Classification Of Natural Sounds Using High Order Sound Statistics, Brian B. Bishop

Master's Theses

The ability of humans and animals to classify sounds into behaviorally relevant categories is an ongoing field of study in auditory neuroscience and psychophysics. We employed a physiologically motivated signal processing scheme to extract time-varying statistics from a large database of real sounds. Our hypothesis is that two sound statistics, intensity and contrast, will be sufficient to classify broad categories of sounds using a naïve Bayesian classifier. We seek to evaluate this hypothesis, determine to what extent these two time-varying statistics can be used to classify sounds and to evaluate the limitations of the technique. The sounds themselves were organized …

Twin Lakes Site: A Look Into Prehistoric Minnesota, Elizabeth K. Sharkey Aug 2016

Twin Lakes Site: A Look Into Prehistoric Minnesota, Elizabeth K. Sharkey

Culminating Projects in Cultural Resource Management

Middle Archaic archaeological sites in Minnesota are rarely discovered and the cultural context of this period is poorly known. This thesis presents the research conducted on a recently identified Middle Archaic site in central Minnesota called Twin Lakes. The site was dated using modern dating techniques. This along with the in depth lithic and statistical analysis adds to the interpretation of the lifeways of early Minnesota people and an elusive time period in the state’s archaeological record.

How Do You Count That?: Statistical Reporting Of Online Library Instruction Activities, Tim Bottorff, Andrew Todd Jul 2016

How Do You Count That?: Statistical Reporting Of Online Library Instruction Activities, Tim Bottorff, Andrew Todd

Andrew Todd

Until recent years, library instruction (LI) was usually conducted in face-to-face (F2F) settings. Statistical reporting of LI activities tends, therefore, to focus on measures relevant to F2F settings -- for example, the number of "sessions" (classes) and the number of "participants" (students). However, newer forms of LI conducted in the online realm (from librarians embedded in classes through courseware, to online library tutorials, to for-credit online library research courses, and beyond) may be difficult to count in traditional ways, with significant implications: the way librarians quantify their activities can affect everything from advocacy efforts to funding decisions to individual or …

Attitudes Toward Statistics Studies Among Students With Learning Disabilities, Orly Lipka, Itay Hess

Numeracy

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of a support course to change attitudes toward statistics studies of post-secondary students who were diagnosed with learning disabilities (LD) and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The participants were 22 students in a support course that was provided over a single academic term on a weekly basis. The design of the study was according to 'Pre-Post' comparison. The effects on attitudes toward statistics were examined quantitatively and qualitatively to provide a comprehensive methodology for the research purposes. Results suggest that the weekly support course model that was taught simultaneously to the on-line course …
