While composition studies researchers have examined the ways social media are impacting our lives inside and outside of the classroom, less attention has been given to the ways in which social media—specifically Social Network Sites (SNSs)—may enhance our own research methods and methodologies by helping to combat research participant attrition and build a community around a research project. In this article, we share some of the successes and shortfalls of using SNSs for research purposes, based on our own experiences using Facebook in the context of our writing program’s Longitudinal Study of Student Writers. Specifically, we present five considerations related …

In human-computer interaction research and practice, policy concerns can sometimes fall to the margins, orbiting at the periphery of the traditionally core interests of design and practice. This perspective ignores the important ways that policy is bound up with the technical and behavioral elements of the HCI universe. Policy concerns are triggered as a matter of course in social computing, CSCW, systems engineering, UX, and related contexts because technological design, social practice and policy are dynamically entangled and mutually constitutive. Through this research, we demonstrate the value of a stronger emphasis on policy in HCI by exploring a recent controversy …

Social Comparison And Self-Presentation On Social Media As Predictors Of Depressive Symptoms, Janet L. Uhlir Jan 2016

Social Comparison And Self-Presentation On Social Media As Predictors Of Depressive Symptoms, Janet L. Uhlir

Scripps Senior Theses

Social media, an online arena for social behaviors such as self-presentation and social comparison, may have effects on users’ mood and mental health. Favorably presenting oneself is linked to positive outcomes such as higher self-esteem, whereas social comparison, in general and specifically upward social comparison to higher-performing others, is related to feelings of inadequacy, envy, and depression. Social comparison may explain the “Facebook depression effect,” acting as a mediator between time spent on social media and depressive symptoms. A correlational study is proposed that will ask 200 participants to report their time spent on various social media sites, self-presentation of …

Adolescent Peer-Related Computer-Mediated Communication And Its Relationship To Social Anxiety, Neil Matthew Parker Jan 2016

Adolescent Peer-Related Computer-Mediated Communication And Its Relationship To Social Anxiety, Neil Matthew Parker

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Adolescents are adopting computer-mediated communication (CMC) at a higher rate than any other age group, with CMC becoming integral to their social relationships. This is particularly significant given the role peer relationships play in adolescent mental health. The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental study was to explore the relationship between adolescent CMC and social anxiety. The research was guided by Erikson's theory of psychosocial development and Kock's media naturalness theory. This multiwave panel study included a convenience sample of 58 adolescents ages 11 to 18. Surveys were completed on participant's social skills and introversion, and daily data were gathered on …

Public Value Creation Through Social Media Networks: Mixed Methods Research On Indonesia's Disaster Management Agencies, Uuf Brajawidagda Jan 2016

Public Value Creation Through Social Media Networks: Mixed Methods Research On Indonesia's Disaster Management Agencies, Uuf Brajawidagda

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Public value represents the net benefits created by government for various stakeholders in society. Hence public value often includes both economic value and social value. While economic value includes efficiency gains and reduced costs of operating public programs, social value (or socially oriented value) can encompass intangible benefits such as government transparency, government accountability, citizens’ trust in government and public safety. The open government initiatives across the world have stimulated wide adoption and use of social media platforms by governments at all levels which can change the relationships and interactions between government and the public. Through the use of social …

The Effect Of Social Media On Sexual Cognitions And Behaviors, Joshua Duarte Jan 2016

The Effect Of Social Media On Sexual Cognitions And Behaviors, Joshua Duarte

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Pop culture and social media have become a prime source of entertainment and communication. The current study focuses on the potential effects of consuming this form of media and how it affects our sexual cognitions and behaviors. A sample of nine hundred and two university students were given self-reporting questionnaires concerning demographics, sexual cognitions, and exposure to sexual content in music. An analysis of music artist’s posts on social media was also performed. It was hypothesized that artists who have sexual content published in their work will also have the same amount of sexual content on social media. However, there …

The Interaction Between Body Image, Eating Attitudes, And The Use Of Social Media Platforms, Alexis Wells Jan 2016

The Interaction Between Body Image, Eating Attitudes, And The Use Of Social Media Platforms, Alexis Wells

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

It has been established that the media (such as television, magazines, etc.) can have a significant effect on body image and eating behaviors, but very few studies have examined the interactions between body image, eating behaviors, and social media. Where media is largely visual, in that material is presented to the viewers for consumption without conscious interaction, social media is almost entirely based upon interactions between the users and the accounts or "friends" they follow. We hypothesized that gender and the specific social media platforms used would be the most significant variables in relation to disordered eating and a low …

Harnessing The Power Of Text Mining For The Detection Of Abusive Content In Social Media, Hao Chen, Susan Mckeever, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference papers

Abstract The issues of cyberbullying and online harassment have gained considerable coverage in the last number of years. Social media providers need to be able to detect abusive content both accurately and efficiently in order to protect their users. Our aim is to investigate the application of core text mining techniques for the automatic detection of abusive content across a range of social media sources include blogs, forums, media-sharing, Q&A and chat - using datasets from Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, Kongregate, Formspring and Slashdot. Using supervised machine learning, we compare alternative text representations and dimension reduction approaches, including feature selection and …

The New Gatekeepers: How Blogs Subverted Mainstream Book Reviews, Rebecca E. Johnson Jan 2016

The New Gatekeepers: How Blogs Subverted Mainstream Book Reviews, Rebecca E. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Book reviewing has a fraught history in the United States. Reviewers have long been accused of not being analytical enough. It should be no wonder then with the emergence of social media that online book reviewing has become increasingly popular. Online reviewers, especially book bloggers, are no literary gatekeepers in their own right, shaping the tastes of readers across the world. Book blogs in particular pay special attention to titles which have long been derided by institutions such as libraries, academia, publishers, and bookstores. These literary gatekeepers typically ignore romance, fantasy, mystery, science fiction, young adult fiction, comic books, and …

Social Media And Crisis Management: Cerc, Search Strategies, And Twitter Content, Kenneth Lachlan, Patric Spence, Xialing Lin, Kristy M. Najarian, Maria Del Greco

Patric R. Spence

The current manuscript explores Twitter use and content in the precrisis stages of a major weather event in the northeast. A multi-level content analysis of tweets collected in the lead up to landfall suggests that emergency management agencies largely underutilized the medium, and that actionable information was easier to find when searching along localized hashtags. The findings are discussed in terms of the Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication (CERC) model of crisis management and implications for emergency management agencies.
