Same-Sex Weddings At The Jersey Shore, Joanna L. Grossman Oct 2013

Same-Sex Weddings At The Jersey Shore, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

As of today, gay and lesbian couples can get legally married in New Jersey. This development arises from a series of events, most importantly the refusal of the state’s highest court to delay enforcement of a lower-court ruling that said the state’s ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. But in refusing to delay enforcement, the New Jersey Supreme Court has signaled its views on the underlying question: Can New Jersey constitutionally restrict same-sex couples to civil unions now that the federal government gives effect only to full marriages? Its answer seems to be “no.”

Networking Young Citizens: Learning To Be Citizens In And With The Social Web, Suzanne Mellor, Terri Seddon

Suzanne Mellor

Many claims are made in the popular press and in professional education literature about the potential role of the social web for increasing the active civic engagement of young citizens, by either using it as a source of information or as a participatory tool. Empirical evidence supporting such claims is sparse and contested. Moreover, the impact of a young person’s general learning experience, especially that involving Web2, is rarely considered in terms of young people’s likely or actual active civic engagement. The Australian pilot research project Networking Young Citizens, supported by Monash University, examined the ways in which Web2 was …

Victimization Experiences And Adolescent Substance Use: Does The Type And Degree Of Victimization Matter?, Gillian M. Pichevsky, Abigail A. Fagan, Emily M. Wright

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Evidence indicates an association between victimization and adolescent substance use, but the exact nature of this relationship remains unclear. Some research focuses solely on the consequences of experiencing indirect victimization (e.g., witnessing violence), others examine direct victimization (e.g., being personally victimized), and still others combine both forms of victimization without assessing the relative impact of each on substance use. Furthermore, many of these studies only assess these relationships in the short-term using cross-sectional data. This study uses data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN) to explore the impact of experiencing only indirect victimization, only direct victimization, …

Increased Risk And Related Factors Of Depression Among Patients With Copd: A Population-Based Cohort Study, Tzung-Yi Tsai, Hanoch Livneh, Ming-Chi Lu, Pang-Yau Tsai, Pei-Chun Chen, Fung-Chang Sung

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background

Depression is a common and mostly undertreated problem in patients with chronic diseases. However, population-based studies on the association between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and subsequent depression are limited in Asian populations. This study evaluated the incidence and risk factors of depression for patients with COPD in Taiwan.

Methods

Using the claims data from the National Health Insurance of Taiwan, we identified 38,010 COPD patients newly diagnosed in 2000–2004 and 38,010 subjects without COPD frequency, matched by sex, age and index date. The incidence rate and hazard ratio for depression were estimated by the end of 2008.

Thinking Outside The Box Turtle: Public Perceptions Of An Imperiled Species, Colleen M. Hartel, Stuart Carlton, Linda S. Prokopy

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina) experience negative impacts from human activities. Collection for the pet trade or mortalities caused by lawn mowers and vehicles are detrimental to populations, which have experienced rapid decline in Indiana. Understanding perceptions and attitudes held about species can help outreach. This study aims to observe how perceptions and fear response differ between a) genders, b) contact with box turtles, and c) conservation group membership. Mail surveys were administered to 1,378 residents of the Blue River Watershed in Southern Indiana. Respondents rated box turtles on 11 semantic differential pairs and reported their agreement …

Development Of Non-Invasive In Vivo Ultrasound Imaging Techniques For Elastase-Induced Experimental Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms, Alexa A. Yrineo, Elizabeth A. Nunamaker, Hilary D. Schroeder, Amy E. Bogucki, Craig J. Goergen Oct 2013

Development Of Non-Invasive In Vivo Ultrasound Imaging Techniques For Elastase-Induced Experimental Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms, Alexa A. Yrineo, Elizabeth A. Nunamaker, Hilary D. Schroeder, Amy E. Bogucki, Craig J. Goergen

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are pathological dilations of the aorta which are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The underlying mechanisms that cause this inflammatory disease are not fully understood and thus, are currently under investigation. In the hopes of preventing disease progression, rodent models that mimic the human condition have been developed to provide insight into the pathogenesis of AAAs. In this study, porcine pancreatic elastase (0.44 U; Sigma-Aldrich) was infused into the infrarenal aortas of male, Sprague Dawley rats to induce aneurysms. To perform the surgery, temporary ligatures were placed around proximal and distal sections of the abdominal …

Residual Fmri Sensitivity For Identity Changes In Acquired Prosopagnosia, Christopher J. Fox, Giuseppe Iaria, Bradley C. Duchaine, Jason J. S. Barton Oct 2013

Residual Fmri Sensitivity For Identity Changes In Acquired Prosopagnosia, Christopher J. Fox, Giuseppe Iaria, Bradley C. Duchaine, Jason J. S. Barton

Dartmouth Scholarship

While a network of cortical regions contribute to face processing, the lesions in acquired prosopagnosia are highly variable, and likely result in different combinations of spared and affected regions of this network. To assess the residual functional sensitivities of spared regions in prosopagnosia, we designed a rapid event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment that included pairs of faces with same or different identities and same or different expressions. By measuring the release from adaptation to these facial changes we determined the residual sensitivity of face-selective regions-of-interest. We tested three patients with acquired prosopagnosia, and all three of these patients …

A Topics Analysis Model For Health Insurance Claims, Jared Anthony Webb Oct 2013

A Topics Analysis Model For Health Insurance Claims, Jared Anthony Webb

Theses and Dissertations

Mathematical probability has a rich theory and powerful applications. Of particular note is the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method for sampling from high dimensional distributions that may not admit a naive analysis. We develop the theory of the MCMC method from first principles and prove its relevance. We also define a Bayesian hierarchical model for generating data. By understanding how data are generated we may infer hidden structure about these models. We use a specific MCMC method called a Gibbs' sampler to discover topic distributions in a hierarchical Bayesian model called Topics Over Time. We propose an innovative use …

E-Bikes In The United States, John Macarthur Oct 2013

E-Bikes In The United States, John Macarthur

PSU Transportation Seminars

Electric bicycles (e-bikes) are well established in China and other Asian and European countries but have yet to realize their potential in the United States, although recently the number of e-bikes has been growing. Research on the economic, operational, and safety issues of e-bikes in the U.S. is limited. This research aims in part to understand if different bicycling technology, in this case electric assist bicycles or e-bikes, can reduce barriers to bicycling and encourage more bike trips and longer bike trips, and increase the diversity of people bicycling, including people with a disability or chronic injury to bicycle. Some …

Playing In The Sandbox: Using Mixed Methods And Social Network To Examine Interorganizational Relationships Between Nonprofit Housing Organizations In The Richmond Metropolitan Area, Tamarah Holmes Oct 2013

Playing In The Sandbox: Using Mixed Methods And Social Network To Examine Interorganizational Relationships Between Nonprofit Housing Organizations In The Richmond Metropolitan Area, Tamarah Holmes

Theses and Dissertations

Nonprofit housing organizations primarily exist to address the housing needs of low-income residents, whose housing needs are not sufficiently met by the public or private housing market. NHOs are very similar to private corporations in their size, productivity and commitment to the “bottom line.” However, unlike private firms, NHOs are “mission driven” instead profit-driven corporations. The development of affordable housing in the nonprofit housing sector requires a myriad of financial and non-financial resources. As competition for financial resources intensifies many organizations are adopting strategies as a means to not only reduce organizational uncertainty and sustain them, but also increase or …

Signal Processing Of Electroencephalogram For The Detection Of Attentiveness Towards Short Training Videos, Paul Nussbaum Oct 2013

Signal Processing Of Electroencephalogram For The Detection Of Attentiveness Towards Short Training Videos, Paul Nussbaum

Theses and Dissertations

This research has developed a novel method which uses an easy to deploy single dry electrode wireless electroencephalogram (EEG) collection device as an input to an automated system that measures indicators of a participant’s attentiveness while they are watching a short training video. The results are promising, including 85% or better accuracy in identifying whether a participant is watching a segment of video from a boring scene or lecture, versus a segment of video from an attentiveness inducing active lesson or memory quiz. In addition, the final system produces an ensemble average of attentiveness across many participants, pinpointing areas in …

Depending on their program of study, many students graduating from colleges and universities will have had few educational opportunities to learn about the influence of a changing Canadian demographic. However, the reality is that an aging population can be expected to impact their careers regardless of their chosen field of work. At Sheridan College, the Sheridan Elder Research Centre (SERC) has developed a comprehensive applied research training and mentorship program for college students. This training is designed as a week-long immersive and interactive series of workshops. In addition to laying a solid theoretical foundation, exploring current issues in the field …
