The Forensic Burke: A For(U)Mative Member Of The Parlor, Courtney James Wright
The Forensic Burke: A For(U)Mative Member Of The Parlor, Courtney James Wright
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
In this study, I detail the forensics education of Kenneth Burke, a leading rhetorical theorist and critic of the twentieth century. After investigating this previously unexamined area, I argue that Burke’s competitive forensics experiences pivotally informed his rhetorical schema. Theoretically guided by Burke’s pivotal term the forensic, I begin by mapping the contours of Burke’s educational biography. Next, I analyze and reconstruct Burke’s forensics education by focusing on the forensic organizations of Peabody High School, Burke’s literary society experiences at Ohio State University and Columbia University, and the literary activities of Greenwich Village. Finally, I proffer connections between forensics …

Jfk, Don Draper, And The New Sentimentality, Gary R. Edgerton
Jfk, Don Draper, And The New Sentimentality, Gary R. Edgerton
Gary R. Edgerton
The semiotic similarities between JFK and Don Draper are unmistakable. Each is tall, handsome, and typically turned out in a custom-made dark suit with a matching skinny tie. Their demeanors are outwardly cool but sexy; old-school handsome if a bit aloof; elegant in style while projecting a kind of ironic intelligence. They both embody what David Newman and Robert Benton characterized in a feature article for Esquire in July 1964 as 'The New Sentimentality.' By that time, the Kennedy mystique was reaching mythic proportions in the immediate wake of his assassination on November 22, 1963, which in turn ushered in …

Pride And Prejudice: Treatment Of Immigrant Groups In United States History Textbooks, 1890-1930, Stuart J. Foster
Pride And Prejudice: Treatment Of Immigrant Groups In United States History Textbooks, 1890-1930, Stuart J. Foster
Education and Culture
Between 1881 and 1890 more than five million immigrants entered the United States. The decade marked the beginning of a period of unprecedented growth in the number of newcomers arriving on America's shores. Indeed, between 1890 and 1930 approximately twenty four million immigrants poured on to the nation's soil continually adding to the rich and complex mix of American humanity. The impact of mass immigration on public education was profound. By 1909, for example, when the U. S. Immigration Commission investigated the ethnic origins of students in thirty seven of the nation's largest cities, officials discovered more than sixty nationalities …

Leta Stetter Hollingworth And The Speyer School, 1935-1940: Historical Roots Of The Contradictions In Progressive Education For Gifted Children, Rose A. Rutnitski
Education and Culture
Leta Stetter Hollingworth, a pioneer of gifted education in America, embodies the dichotomy between the ideals of progressive education and the measurement movement prevalent at the beginning of this century, the movement most closely associated with the identification of gifted and talented students. The Speyer School experiment illustrated how the measurement paradigm could dominate a very democratic model of elementary education for exceptional children. There are vestiges of the strictly "objective" measurement paradigm in the identification of students for gifted programs today, juxtaposed with a very democratic paradigm in curriculum and teaching in those same programs. This article briefly documents …
Cyberterrorism In The Context Of Contemporary International Law, Yaroslav Shiryaev
Cyberterrorism In The Context Of Contemporary International Law, Yaroslav Shiryaev
San Diego International Law Journal
The present Article addressed the legal issues surrounding cyberterrorism. In the first chapter, the author explains why cyberterrorism should be described as “the use of electronic networks taking the form of a cyber-attack to commit a) a substantive act criminalized by the existing legal instruments prohibiting terrorism, or b) an act of terrorism under international customary law.” Further, with a special emphasis on existing anti-terrorism conventions and customary international law, it was demonstrated which actors are likely to engage in acts of cyberterrorism (non-state actors, corporations and individuals), as well as which targets are protected by law and which aims …

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
Objectives Community-based services, such as Meals on Wheels (MOW), allow older adults to remain in their homes for as long as possible. Many MOW recipients experience decreased appetite that limits intake at mealtimes. This pilot study aimed to determine the feasibility of providing high protein high energy snacks to improve nutrient intakes of MOW clients in a regional centre of New South Wales, Australia.
Participants A convenience sample of 12 MOW clients.
Intervention Participants received snacks five times a week, in addition to their usual MOW order, for four weeks.

Writing A Pedagogy Of Whiteness: A Relational Ethic Of Teaching, Chris Mcrae, John T. Warren
Writing A Pedagogy Of Whiteness: A Relational Ethic Of Teaching, Chris Mcrae, John T. Warren
Communication Faculty Publications
Our experiences teaching about whiteness in communication classrooms have resulted in a wide spectrum of responses from students. We are troubled in particular by the overly resistant and compliant student responses to this subject, as we desire to engage with our students in a critically nuanced and potentially transformative dialogue about race and racism. This essay builds from our experiences in the classroom and works to articulate the dilemmas we often face as we teach about whiteness in our courses. These dilemmas mirror similar concerns we face in our own scholarly practices of reflexivity. By troubling our reflexive practices, as …

Leverage And Alcohol Addiction, Tom Gallagher
Leverage And Alcohol Addiction, Tom Gallagher
Northeast Popular Culture Association
This paper confronts the question of whether messages can be diluted or even contradicted by the format in which they are delivered through a textual analysis of the TNT procedural drama Leverage, examining the portrayal of alcoholism in the program. The procedural drama, which often focuses on figures in law and order occupations, is characterized by close-ended episodes that often feature happy endings. Alcohol addiction has been a staple of many television programs, but these programs were mostly comedies or serial dramas. Leverage, a procedural drama with a light touch, is a modern day Robin Hood tale focused on five …

Narratives Serially Constructed And Lived: Ethnicity In Cross-Gender Strikes 1887-1903, Ileen A. Devault
Narratives Serially Constructed And Lived: Ethnicity In Cross-Gender Strikes 1887-1903, Ileen A. Devault
Ileen A DeVault
[Excerpt] The strikes narrated in this paper have illustrated different ways in which individuals' recognition of ethnic identity could interact with their recognition of gender and class identities. In each strike workers' identities developed along with the serial narrative of the particular strike situation. The use of Sartre's concept of the series helps us think about the many possible variations of class, ethnicity, and gender. Though Sartre planned to use his concept of series as a way to examine peoples' class identities, my employment of the concept broadens it to include other categories of identification as well. Using the concept …

A Modest Proposal: A Chamber Opera In One Act, Kevin Morse
A Modest Proposal: A Chamber Opera In One Act, Kevin Morse
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
A Modest Proposal is a chamber opera in one act adapted from the 1729 satirical essay of the same name by Jonathan Swift. The opera’s narrative was developed in close partnership with Toronto-based Governor-General’s Literary Award-nominated playwright Lisa Codrington, whom I commissioned to write the libretto. Set in an unnamed city in the present day, the work explores themes of economic disparity, social class, political power and process, parents and children, love, anger, and revenge. I integrate musical quotations from (or references to) folk lullabies and the works of Mahler, Debussy, and Schoenberg to support and enhance the richness and …
