An Interview With Michael Martone, Matthew Baker
An Interview With Michael Martone, Matthew Baker
Booth
Depending on whom you ask, Michael Martone is either contemporary literature's most notorious prankster, innovator, or mutineer. In 1988 his AAP membership was briefly revoked after Martone published his first two books -- a "prose" collection titled Alive and Dead in Indiana and a "poetry" collection titled Seeing Eye -- which, aside from Seeing Eye's line breaks, were word-for-word identical. His membership to the Society of Scottish Novelists was revoked in 1991 after SSN discovered that, while Martone's registered nom de plume had been "born" in Edinburgh, Martone himself had never been to Scotland. His AWP membership was revoked …

A Case Study In Frontier Warfare: Racial Violence, Revenge, And The Ambush At Fort Laurens, Ohio, Kyle Somerville
A Case Study In Frontier Warfare: Racial Violence, Revenge, And The Ambush At Fort Laurens, Ohio, Kyle Somerville
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
In February of 1779, a combined British and Native American raiding party ambushed a small group of American soldiers at an isolated fort on the Ohio frontier. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least 13 soldiers, many of who died from massive head injuries that, to modern researchers, do not appear to have been tactically necessary. However, rather than being an isolated instance of savagery or wartime atrocity this paper considers the ideological and cultural bases of violence behind the trauma, and will argue that the Fort Laurens ambush was just one example of violence in a long …

Attorney General Mukasey’S Defense Of Irresponsibility , Kent Greenfield
Kent Greenfield
Attorney General Mukasey’s commencement speech at Boston College Law School did a disservice to the institution. First, it gave a platform to one whose position on torture is contrary to the humanitarian values of the school. Second, by encouraging students to divorce their own morals from their legal reasoning and simply “say what the law is,” it reduced the practice of law to a mere exercise in research, devoid of any of the principles for which the school (and legal education in general) stands. This Article addresses two issues surrounding Attorney General Michael Mukasey’s invitation to speak at Boston College …
Book Review: Robert W. Demaree And Don V Moses. The Masses Of Joseph Haydn: History, Style, Performance. Rochester Hills, Mi: Classical Heritage, 2008. Xxxvi, 854 Pp. Isbn: 978-0-615-26052-5., Bruce C. Macintyre
HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America
Young choral directors who wish to learn everything about Haydn’s masses should first consult this up-to-date and information-packed book. (This reviewer did not say “read” because the background histories and music analyses are very detailed and, as a result, the volume is inordinately long – and not a book easily read through from cover to cover.)

Romantic Transports: Tabitha Tenney's Female Quixotism In Transatlantic Context, Rachel Carnell, Alison Tracy Hale
Romantic Transports: Tabitha Tenney's Female Quixotism In Transatlantic Context, Rachel Carnell, Alison Tracy Hale
English Faculty Publications
A literary criticism of several books including "Female Quixotism" by Tabitha Tenney, "The Female Quixote" by Charlotte Lennox, and "Angelina" by Maria Edgeworth is presented. According to the authors, these novels constitute a transatlantic genre which highlights the moral and cultural complexities faced by women in the 18th and 19th centuries. Particular focus is given to the novels' political contexts. Realism, the French Revolution, and republican government are also discussed.

Adventures In North America According To My Own Experiences: My Military Service, Andreas Hanselmann, Ch. H. Im Bundt, Richard Blatter, Translator, Leo Schelbert, Editor
Swiss American Historical Society Review
I came back to New Orleans. There one talked about nothing else but war. The northern and southern states rebelled against each other. In the latter, Negro slaves were used in the cotton- and sugar cane plantations. The others abhorred the trade with people and worked toward the abolition of slavery. For many years the Democrats, as the friends of slavery called themselves, were successful in winning for one of theirs the presidential election that took place every four years and thereby dominated the federal government.

First Amendment Based Copyright Misuse, David S. Olson
First Amendment Based Copyright Misuse, David S. Olson
David S. Olson
We are at a crossroads with respect to the underdeveloped equitable defense of copyright misuse. The defense may go the way of its sibling, antitrust-based patent misuse, which seems to be in a state of inevitable decline. Or—if judges accept the proposal of this Article—courts could reinvigorate the copyright misuse defense to better protect First Amendment speech that is guaranteed by statute, but that is often chilled by copyright holders misusing their copyrights to control others’ speech. The Copyright Act serves First Amendment interests by encouraging authors to create works. But copyright law can also discourage the creation of new …
