True catalases are tyrosine-liganded, usually tetrameric, hemoproteins with subunit sizes of ∼55-84 kDa. Recently characterized hemoproteins with a catalase-related structure, yet lacking in catalatic activity, include the 40-43 kDa allene oxide synthases of marine invertebrates and cyanobacteria. Herein, we describe the 1.8 Å X-ray crystal structure of a 33 kDa subunit hemoprotein from Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (annotated as MAP-2744c), that retains the core elements of the catalase fold and exhibits an organic peroxide-dependent peroxidase activity. MAP-2744c exhibits negligible catalatic activity, weak peroxidatic activity using hydrogen peroxide (20/s) and strong peroxidase activity (∼300/s) using organic hydroperoxides as co-substrate. Key amino …

High Frequency Of The D Allele Of The Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Gene In Arabic Populations, Abdel Halim Salem, Mark A. Batzer

Faculty Publications

Background. The angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene in humans has an insertion-deletion (I/D) polymorphic state in intron 16 on chromosome 17q23. This polymorphism has been widely investigated in different populations due to its association with the renin-angiotensin system. However, similar studies for Arab populations are limited. This study addresses the distribution of the ACE gene polymorphism in three Arab populations (Egyptians, Jordanians and Syrians). Findings. The polymorphisms of ACE gene were investigated using polymerase chain reaction for detection of an I/D mutation. The results showed a high frequency of the ACE D allele among the three Arab populations, Egyptians (0.67), Jordanians …

Allele Frequencies Of The Human Platelet Antigen-1 In The Egyptian Population, Abdel Halim Salem, Kyudong Han, Mark A. Batzer

Faculty Publications

Background. The human platelet alloantigen system HPA-1 in the Egyptian population was examined by polymerase chain reaction using sequence-specific primers (PCR-SSP). The objectives of this study were to evaluate the allele frequency of HPA-1a and -1b in healthy Egyptian individuals and compare these with the international literature. Human platelet antigen (HPA) systems are associated with alloimmunization and organ transplantation rejection as well as the development of cardiovascular disease. Of the various HPA systems, HPA-1 specifically has been considered to be the most important antigenic system implicated in the Caucasian population. No study has yet examined this system in the Egyptian …

The goal of this work is to investigate, for a large set of patients, the motion of the heart with respiration during free-breathing supine medical imaging. For this purpose we analyzed the motion of the heart in 32 non-contrast enhanced respiratory-gated 4D-CT datasets acquired during quiet unconstrained breathing. The respiratory-gated CT images covered the cardiac region and were acquired at each of 10 stages of the respiratory cycle, with the first stage being end-inspiration. We devised a 3-D semi-automated segmentation algorithm that segments the heart in the 4D-CT datasets acquired without contrast enhancement for use in estimating respiratory motion of …

Optimal Partitions For Eigenvalues, Blaise Bourdin, Dorin Bucur, Édouard Oudet Dec 2009

Optimal Partitions For Eigenvalues, Blaise Bourdin, Dorin Bucur, Édouard Oudet

Faculty Publications

We introduce a new numerical method for approximating partitions of a domain minimizing the sum of Dirichlet-Laplacian eigenvalues of any order. First we prove the equivalence of the original problem and a relaxed formulation based on measures. Using this result, we build a numerical algorithm to approximate optimal configurations. We describe numerical experiments aimed at studying the asymptotic behavior of optimal partitions with large numbers of cells. © 2009 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

The Amino Terminus Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Glycoprotein K (Gk) Modulates Gb-Mediated Virus-Induced Cell Fusion And Virion Egress, Vladimir N. Chouljenko, Arun V. Iyer, Sona Chowdhury, Dmitry V. Chouljenko, Konstantin G. Kousoulas Dec 2009

The Amino Terminus Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Glycoprotein K (Gk) Modulates Gb-Mediated Virus-Induced Cell Fusion And Virion Egress, Vladimir N. Chouljenko, Arun V. Iyer, Sona Chowdhury, Dmitry V. Chouljenko, Konstantin G. Kousoulas

Faculty Publications

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1)-induced cell fusion is mediated by viral glycoproteins and other membrane proteins expressed on infected cell surfaces. Certain mutations in the carboxyl terminus of HSV-1 glycoprotein B (gB) and in the amino terminus of gK cause extensive virus-induced cell fusion. Although gB is known to be a fusogenic glycoprotein, the mechanism by which gK is involved in virus-induced cell fusion remains elusive. To delineate the amino-terminal domains of gK involved in virus-induced cell fusion, the recombinant viruses gKΔ31-47, gKΔ31-68, and gKΔ31-117, expressing gK carrying in-frame deletions spanning the amino terminus of gK immediately after the …

The Glycine Plus Serine Requirement Of Broiler Chicks Fed Low-Crude Protein, Corn-Soybean Meal Diets, A. M. Waguespack, S. Powell, T. D. Bidner, L. L. Southern

Faculty Publications

Low-protein, amino acid-supplemented, all-vegetable diets for broilers may not result in optimal FCR unless they are supplemented with Gly. Three experiments were conducted to determine the Gly + Ser requirement in a low-CP, corn- and soybean meal-based diet with 0.25% l-Lys·HCl, a level which previously had been shown to result in optimal growth performance of broilers as long as it is supplemented with Gly to maintain a minimum of 2.32% total Gly + Ser. Glycine addition to the diet did not affect ADG or ADFI but decreased FCR. When the FCR data from all 3 experiments were combined, the total …

The Mars Odyssey Gamma Ray Spectrometer Suite has yielded global chemical information for Mars. In this work, we establish regions of unusual chemical composition relative to average Mars primarily on the basis of Ca, Cl, Fe, H, K, Si, and Th. Using data from Mars Odyssey; the Mars Exploration Rovers; the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Imaging; and 3.5 cm and 1.35 cm radar observations from Earth, we examine a chemically striking ≈2.E6 km2 region and find it to overlap significantly with a radar Stealth region on Mars. It is remarkably enriched in Cl and depleted in Fe and Si (along with …

Approximating Stationary Statistical Properties, Xiaoming Wang Dec 2009

Approximating Stationary Statistical Properties, Xiaoming Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

It is well-known that physical laws for large chaotic dynamical systems are revealed statistically. Many times these statistical properties of the system must be approximated numerically. the main contribution of this manuscript is to provide simple and natural criterions on numerical methods (temporal and spatial discretization) that are able to capture the stationary statistical properties of the underlying dissipative chaotic dynamical systems asymptotically. the result on temporal approximation is a recent finding of the author, and the result on spatial approximation is a new one. Applications to the infinite Prandtl number model for convection and the barotropic quasi-geostrophic model are …

Dimensions Of Loss From Mental Illness, Amy E. Z. Baker, Nicholas Procter, Tony Gibbons Dec 2009

Dimensions Of Loss From Mental Illness, Amy E. Z. Baker, Nicholas Procter, Tony Gibbons

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This review explores the nature, scope and consequences of loss resulting from mental illness. Losses are described within four key themes: self and identity, work and employment opportunities, relationships, and future-oriented losses. In reflecting upon review findings, several assumptions about loss are illuminated. Findings are situated within the cornerstones of recent mental health reform, specifically a recovery-oriented approach and social inclusion. Particular attention is directed towards notions of risk and responsibility and tensions in realizing the impact of loss within an individualized recovery framework. Implications and recommendations for policy and practice are highlighted.

China’S Evolving “Double-Track” Socio-Legal System In Conflict Resolution, Jieli Li Dec 2009

China’S Evolving “Double-Track” Socio-Legal System In Conflict Resolution, Jieli Li

Peace and Conflict Studies

Contemporary China's sociolegal control system is built upon a unique organizational arrangement which differs not only from other countries in the world but also from its own past. The very core of this organizational arrangement is what I define as a “double-track” socio-legality with laws and codified regulation mainly concentrated on economic and commercial sectors with the ruling party focusing its administrative control on political and ideological sectors. This institutional context is critical to understanding the nature of social control mechanism in China. The fact is that with all the laws and regulations promulgated in recent years, the newly developed …

Labor Law Reforms: China’S Response To Challenges Of Globalization, Yunqiu Zhang Dec 2009

Labor Law Reforms: China’S Response To Challenges Of Globalization, Yunqiu Zhang

Peace and Conflict Studies

The post-Mao years witnessed vigorous labor law reform efforts in China, which can be partly understood in terms of globalization, economic and legal. In the economic globalization, China was increasingly integrated into the world economic system and exposed to international pressures to reform its traditional labor system and follow internationally-accepted labor rules. In other words, the economic globalization created the need for labor law reforms in China. In the legal globalization, China was apparently the recipient or borrower of foreign legal ideas including ideas about labor legislation. These ideas inspired the Chinese to build a new legal system concerning labor.

Military Modernization And Peaceful Rising: A Harmonious Transition Of The Pla Into The Future, Xiaobing Li

Peace and Conflict Studies

This article seeks to elucidate the recent changes to the Chinese military by examining the new characteristics of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and its newly adopted approaches for modernization between 2003 and 2008. It includes diachronic discussions to explore various social and political factors for the changes, domestic and international constraints on the implementation of military modernization, and the outcomes of these endeavors. The main findings indicate that the Chinese military has changed its main feature as two important transitions have emerged: first, the PLA has been transformed from a manpower intensive army to a technology oriented force; and …

An Emerging South-South Coalition Strategy: China, Africa And Latin America, Tricia Gray Dec 2009

An Emerging South-South Coalition Strategy: China, Africa And Latin America, Tricia Gray

Peace and Conflict Studies

Concomitant with the astronomical rise of China in international politics, there has been an increased frequency and intensity of foreign relations between Global South states. This research attempts to, first, illuminate these largely overlooked foreign policy activities, and, second, to evaluate the implications of the trends. A South-South strategy is based on improving the position of developing countries in multilateral organizations, struggling against international marginalization, enhancing economic and technical cooperation, and challenging hegemonism and imperialism. This study concludes that a South-South coalition framework is a useful model for understanding Global South states’ foreign policy behavior and for addressing future conflicts.

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

One hundred and one sediment cores were collected to characterize the spatial distribution of petroleum hydrocarbons within and just outside Blind Pass, St. Pete Beach, Florida. Twenty-five percent of the cores exhibited levels of petroleum hydrocarbons above detection limits of the gas chromatograph/flame ionization detector (GC/FID) (0.01 mg/Kg), but at generally low concentrations. Petroleum hydrocarbon speciation studies of these samples (gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy [GC/MS]) indicate above-detection level (1 μg/Kg) petroleum hydrocarbons are similar to the non-volatile petroleum hydrocarbons found in a Bouchard 155 reference sample collected after the 1993 oil spill in the area, but are in a much degraded …
