Institutional Culture, Performance, And Learning In A Two-Year Technical/Community College, Vicky Maloney Dec 2008

Institutional Culture, Performance, And Learning In A Two-Year Technical/Community College, Vicky Maloney

All Dissertations

The environments of higher education institutions have undergone significant changes in the past twenty years as a result of concerns expressed in prominent reports. These external concerns and initiatives reflect contemporary criticisms by the public about the efficiency and effectiveness of the performance of institutions. The response from research, legislatures, and the institutions has been to implement practices aimed at improvement and borrowed from business and industry. Research indicates that this performance orientation to change in higher education has largely failed, due in part to the lack of attention given to the culture of the institution.
Emerging research indicates a …

Weight And Body Composition Change During The First Year Of College: A Study Of Traditional Residence Hall Freshmen, Stephanie V. Christensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Overweight and obesity trends are on the rise, and young people are no exception. The popular phrase "Freshman 15" suggests that freshmen in college tend to gain weight faster than other populations. There is a growing body of literature that supports evidence of increased weight gain during the transition from high school to college. This study sought to examine not only weight changes among freshmen, but body composition, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC) changes as well. Body composition was measured using air displacement plethysmography (Bod Pod®). This study examined changes in both males (n = 45) …

Organizational Change? Organizational Development? Organizational Transformation?: Why Do We Care What We Call It?, Jacqlyn S. Triscari Nov 2008

Organizational Change? Organizational Development? Organizational Transformation?: Why Do We Care What We Call It?, Jacqlyn S. Triscari

Adult Education Research Conference

This paper represents a literature review on the topic of organizational change. It argues that how we label a specific type of organizational change has an impact on how we both view the change and the potential outcome. The focus here is on transformational change—a change that occurs at the center core of the organization and results in substantial change to the center core of the organization, impacting the currently held beliefs and assumptions.

Leading In The Midst Of Change: A Theologically Grounded, Theoretically Informed Hermeneutic Of Change, Terri L. Elton Sep 2008

Leading In The Midst Of Change: A Theologically Grounded, Theoretically Informed Hermeneutic Of Change, Terri L. Elton

Faculty Publications

This essay proposes a hermeneutic of change, grounded in theology and theory, which can inform church leaders’ strategic actions in the midst of change. Drawing from the work of practical theology, it looks at four vantage points proposed by Don Browning: descriptive, historical, systematic, and strategic. The descriptive view offers two insights: God is active and present in the midst of change and God’s people are simultaneously saints and sinners. The historical perspective points out that God has always been in the midst of change, but God’s love and promises for the world have not changed. Systematic theology fuses the …

The Far Reaching Impact Of Transformative Learning: A Critical Ethnographic Case Study, Aline E. Harrison Jun 2008

The Far Reaching Impact Of Transformative Learning: A Critical Ethnographic Case Study, Aline E. Harrison

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This multiple case study focused on the lives and experiences of four women who participated in an adult literacy program. This case study approach used critical ethnography as an analytic tool employing grounded theory leading to the development of a substantive theory. In-depth, semi-structured interviews and researcher's reflective journal were employed to collect data for this study that critically examined the impact of the transformative process of its participants and its influence on their socio-cultural context. Results revealed that participants did not necessarily experience a disorienting dilemma as contended by Mezirow (1978, 1991, and 2000). Rather participants experienced a series …

Long-Term Strategic Incrementalism: An Approach And A Model For Bringing About Change In Higher Education, Norman W. Evans, Lynn Henrichsen May 2008

Long-Term Strategic Incrementalism: An Approach And A Model For Bringing About Change In Higher Education, Norman W. Evans, Lynn Henrichsen

Faculty Publications

Innovation and reform are crucial to progress, but higher education institutions are by nature highly resistant to change. This article describes long-term strategic incrementalism, an approach to change advocated by L. Cuban, How scholars trumped teachers: Change without reform in university curriculum, teaching, and research, 1890–1990, Teachers College Press, New York, NY, 1999, and proposes a model based on this approach as a proven way of successfully carrying out change within higher education. The approach and model are illustrated through two cases involving reforms—one at the department level and another at the institutional level.

Starhawk Re/Claims A View Of The World, Denice J. Szafran May 2008

Starhawk Re/Claims A View Of The World, Denice J. Szafran

Denice J Szafran, Ph.D.

From the turmoil and turbulence of society in the United States in the mid-20th century arose many movements and groups labeled “counter-cultural.” One such group, Reclaiming Collective, allegedly began as a feminist and alternative religious venture, but through the influence and leadership of its founder, Starhawk, it has taken on the additional role of attempting to alter the society from which it sprang. Culture change is complex and has far-ranging effects. I examine the possible reasons for the birth of Reclaiming through: the theories of cultural materialism and Weberian theories on religion; apply theories of intentional community and invented tradition; …

Demystifying The Legend Of Resistance To Change, Hamid Tahbaz Tavakoli, Nader Ale Ebrahim, Arash Golnam

Nader Ale Ebrahim

Nothing is permanent except change. Many authors stress that the reason for the failure of many change initiatives can be found in resistance to change. Resistance to change introduces costs and delays into the change process that are difficult to anticipate but must be taken into consideration. Undoubtedly the resistance to change is key topic in change management and should be seriously considered to help the organization achieve advantages of the transformation. Considering the importance of resistance to change, this paper aims to delve deeper in this field through theoretical exposition of the concept, elaborating more on the literature involving …

Change And The Adventist Church, Michael E. Cafferky Mar 2008

Change And The Adventist Church, Michael E. Cafferky

Faculty Works

What does it take to bring change to the structure of the Seventh-day Adventist Church? A methodical, incremental process that would protect core values as it tiptoes through the political minefields. The Commission on Ministries, Services, and Structures, a hundred-member committee that studied the subject, brought a report to the 2007 Annual Council recommending a few procedural adjustments that were voted. The changes outlined in the approved measure suggest that organizational mission and unity seem to have Rook® -power over efficiency or financial savings

From Bureaucracy To Enterprise? The Changing Jobs And Careers Of Managers In Telecommunications Service, Rosemary Batt Jan 2008

From Bureaucracy To Enterprise? The Changing Jobs And Careers Of Managers In Telecommunications Service, Rosemary Batt

Rosemary Batt

This paper analyzes how organizational restructuring is affecting managerial labor markets. Drawing on field research from several Bell operating companies plus a detailed survey of managers in one company, this paper considers how organizational restructuring affects the employment levels, the nature of work, and the career trajectories of lower and middle level line managers. Does restructuring lead to a loss or managerial power and a convergence in the working conditions of managerial and nonmanagerial workers? Or, conversely, do managers stand to gain from the flattening of hierarchies and devolution of decision-making to lower organizational levels? The paper's central argument is …

New Internet and Web-based technology applications have meant significant cost and time efficiencies to many American businesses. However, many employers have not yet fully grasped the impact of these new information and communication technologies on applicants and employees with certain disabilities such as vision impairments, hearing problems or limited dexterity. Although not all applicants and employees who have a disability may experience IT-access problems, to select groups it can pose a needless barrier. The increasing dominance of IT in the workplace presents both a challenge and an opportunity for workers with disabilities and their employers. It will be up to …
