Community Coalition Seeks To Enhance School And Community Safety, Office Of Public Affairs

Governors State University and Prairie State College, working with the Jane Addams Juvenile Court Foundation, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, and a coalition of other groups, will convene two free school and community safety events at Prairie State College in January.

These events will focus the public’s attention on restorative justice approaches to conflict resolution and violence reduction by demonstrating how these programs work in school and community settings, and explain how to implement them successfully. “Experiencing the sculptures of the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park on a moonlit night can reward visitors with a unique perspective,” said Geoffrey Bates, director and curator of the sculpture park which is located on the campus of Governors State University. “The subtle light combined with the gentle crunch of snow makes the whole park unfamiliar and new.”

Physical Therapy (PT) students in the College of Health and Human Services of Governors State University (GSU) know a good challenge when they see one.

Since 1989, PT students at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, have challenged students from other PT programs across the nation to raise money for research through the American Physical Therapy Association’s Foundation for Physical Therapy. The foundation raises money to help fund research grants for the development of the most effective physical therapy interventions.

The children from Taft Elementary School had a very special treat on Friday when they visited the Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University. Not only did they get to see a live musical performance of one of their favorite stories, they also had a special meeting with the author, Mary Pope Osborne.

More than 100 kindergarten through third graders from the Kankakee visual arts magnet school enjoyed the stage production of “Magic Tree House: the Musical” because of the generosity of Osborne and her husband Will, who is also one of the creators of the show.

The Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park at Governors State University recently celebrated the dedication of “Sextant Yoke” by artist Mike Baur of West Chicago.

The sculpture dedication was made possible by Lila Thorpe’s donation to the park in honor of her husband Dr. James Harvey Hensley, who passed away in 2001. Dr. Hensley was a well respected professor of astronomy at Governors State University for twenty years.

Recently, hundreds of young children, including 140 kindergarten through second grade students from Bernice Childs Elementary School in Robbins, crowded into The Center for Performing Arts (CPA) at Governors State University to enjoy a rocking, musical depiction of evolution through the stories of some very large and colorful dinosaurs. As the dinosaurs romped across the stage in Mammoth Follies, they taught science lessons and the children laughed, learned, and enjoyed live theater.
