Adr Characteristics And Performance In International And Global Indexes, Arindam Bandopadhyaya, Lal Chugh, James L. Grant Dec 2007

Adr Characteristics And Performance In International And Global Indexes, Arindam Bandopadhyaya, Lal Chugh, James L. Grant

Financial Services Forum Publications

This study looks at the characteristics and performance of ADRs in international and global indexes. We find that ADRs in EAFE are tilted toward three common factors: giant cap, high dividend yield, and U.K. stocks. In terms of risk-adjusted performance, we find that ADRs provide inefficient diversification for US investors, as tradeoffs of return and risk are better with portfolio combinations of the S&P500 and the S&P Global 700, as compared with portfolio combinations of the S&P500 and an ADR breakout of the Global 700. Our findings on ADR characteristics are consistent with prior research, while our performance findings are …

Alternatives To The “Race To The Bottom” In Vietnam: Minimum Wage Strikes And Their Aftermath, Angie Tran Dec 2007

Alternatives To The “Race To The Bottom” In Vietnam: Minimum Wage Strikes And Their Aftermath, Angie Tran

SSGS Faculty Publications and Presentations

This case study focuses on strategic mediating roles of labor newspapers. Concentrating on minimum wage strikes from 2005 to 2006, it shows the state’s pro-foreign direct investment policy, tensions between state bureaucracies and labor unions, and their debates. It demonstrates alternatives to the “race to the bottom” thesis. The larger implication is that labor organizing and spontaneous collective actions can be successful even within a one-party state. It remains to be seen how the new strike law ratified in 2006 addresses structural weaknesses of the labor unions and the state, and how it affects labor organizing for workers’ rights and …

Does Political Advertising Persuade?, Michael M. Franz, Travis N. Ridout Dec 2007

Does Political Advertising Persuade?, Michael M. Franz, Travis N. Ridout

Government Faculty Publications

Well over $1 billion was spent on televised political advertising in the U.S. in 2004. Given the ubiquity of the 30 second spot, one might presume that ads must affect viewers' vote choices. Somewhat surprisingly, though, scholars have yet to make much progress in confirming this claim. In this paper, we leverage a comprehensive dataset that tracks political ads in the nation's top media markets and a survey of presidential and U.S. Senate voters in 2004. We ask whether exposure to presidential and Senate advertising influences voters' evaluations of candidates and the choices that they make at the ballot box. …

Reduced Soil Compaction Enhances Establishment Of Non-Native Plant Species, G. Page Kyle, Karen H. Beard, Andrew Kulmatiski Dec 2007

Reduced Soil Compaction Enhances Establishment Of Non-Native Plant Species, G. Page Kyle, Karen H. Beard, Andrew Kulmatiski

Karen H. Beard

Many studies have shown that soil disturbance facilitates establishment of invasive, non-native plant species, and a number of mechanisms have been isolated that contribute to the process. To our knowledge no studies have isolated the role of altered soil compaction, a likely correlate of many types of soil disturbance, in facilitating invasion. To address this, we measured the response of seeded non-native and native plant species to four levels of soil compaction in mesocosms placed in an abandoned agricultural field in the Methow Valley, Washington, USA. Soil compaction levels reflected the range of resistance to penetration (0.1-3.0 kg cm(-2)) measured …
