Economic Development At A Public University - A Process Model And Associated Metrics, Andres C. Salazar Jan 2006

Economic Development At A Public University - A Process Model And Associated Metrics, Andres C. Salazar

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A university has long been considered an institution of higher learning with the immutable dual goals of research and teaching. A “public” university, however, has also had the founding principle of service, the performance of which is often linked to the region from which it receives public funds. Recently, this service component has morphed to playing an active role in regional economic development. This paper reviews the factors that have led to the situation in which a public university must define a relevant and significant set of objectives for itself in improving the economy of the community it serves. Further, …

Thinking Culturally About Politics: Habits 20 Years Later And 20 Years Hence, Richard L. Wood Jan 2006

Thinking Culturally About Politics: Habits 20 Years Later And 20 Years Hence, Richard L. Wood

Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications

"Habits of the Heart: Individualism and Commitment in American Life" clearly mattered when it was published in 1985: One of only a handful of truly sociological books on the New York Times' list of bestsellers in recent decades, it was widely discussed in congregations, book groups, and classrooms throughout the country. But how might it matter today? Does it carry lasting significance twenty-plus years after publication, or stand as an important but dated commentary on the excesses of 1980s individualism?

Closing The Loop: The Use Of A Curricular Database To Provide Feedback On Student Performance Without Compromising Exam Security, Steven Mitchell, Marie Parkes Jan 2006

Closing The Loop: The Use Of A Curricular Database To Provide Feedback On Student Performance Without Compromising Exam Security, Steven Mitchell, Marie Parkes

UME Faculty and Staff Educational Scholarship

At the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, there is ever-increasing recognition that the development of high-quality medical student examinations is a fundamental part of a high-quality educational experience. As growing faculty time is spent in the development of reliable exams, question banks and the reuse of testing items are both becoming more prevalent. Security of these examinations is thus increasingly becoming a priority. However, our faculty also recognizes the importance of student feedback. In past years, we have allowed students directly access to their tests following the examination sessions, but the increasing importance of exam security obviously conflicts …

The Offspring-Size/Clutch-Size Trade-Off In Mammals., Eric Charnov, S.K.M. Ernest Jan 2006

The Offspring-Size/Clutch-Size Trade-Off In Mammals., Eric Charnov, S.K.M. Ernest

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

The Smith-Fretwell model for optimal offspring size assumes the existence of an inverse proportional relationship (i.e., trade-off) between the number of offspring and the amount of resources invested in an individual offspring; virtually all of the many models derived from theirs make the same trade-off assumption. Over the last 30 years it has become apparent that the predicted proportionality is often not observed when evaluated across species. We develop a general allometric approach to correct for size-related differences in the resources available for reproduction. Using data on mammals, we demonstrate that the predicted inverse proportional relationship between number of offspring …

Maternal Condition And Facultative Sex Ratios In Populations With Overlapping Generations., L.E. Schwanz, J.G. Bragg, Eric Charnov Jan 2006

Maternal Condition And Facultative Sex Ratios In Populations With Overlapping Generations., L.E. Schwanz, J.G. Bragg, Eric Charnov

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Facultative investment in offspring sex is related to maternal condition in many organisms. In mammals, empirical support for condition-dependent sex allocation is equivocal, and there is some doubt as to theoretical expectations. Much theory has been developed to make predictions for condition-dependent sex ratios in populations with discrete generations. However, the extension of these predictions to populations with overlapping generations (OLGs; e.g., mammals) has been limited, leaving doubt as to the specific prediction for maternal-condition-dependent sex ratios in mammals. We develop a population genetics model that incorporates maternal effects on multiple offspring fitness components in a population with OLGs. Using …

The Indigenous Challenge, Carlos Perafan, Dianna Moyer

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

In business circles, indigenous peoples in Latin America are perceived as an obstacle to oil and gas development. However, there is more than that to the story. Recent years have seen a strong reaction from indigenous peoples movements to the way hydrocarbons businesses have been managed in South America. This article discusses some of the effects of oil and gas development on indigenous communities in Latin America.'
