German Jewish Printing In The Reformation Era (1530-1633), Stephen G. Burnett Sep 2006

German Jewish Printing In The Reformation Era (1530-1633), Stephen G. Burnett

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

In this study I will consider how the Reformation affected the Jewish printers of sixteenth-century Germany and their businesses as they attempted to produce and sell Jewish books to a largely Jewish clientele. First I will present capsule histories of the various presses as they operated both before the suppression of the Talmud in 1553, and then afterwards in a new climate of restrictions and press controls. Then I will discuss aspects of the Hebrew printing business, including the creation of printable texts (authors, editors, and censors), customer demand for Jewish books, and how presses financed their activities. And finally, …

Umass Amherst Friends Of The Library Newsletter - Spring/Summer 2006 (No. 31), Jay Schafer

Library News for the Friends of the UMass Amherst Libraries

Message from Jay:

When I saw the cover of this newsletter in draft, my initial reaction was that champagne is not an image traditionally associated with research libraries. Where are the books? Where are the computers? Where are the smiling faces of our generous Friends? Then I rattled my chains of “Librarian Past” and realized that as “Librarian Future” champagne is the perfect symbol to celebrate the recent successes of the UMass Amherst Libraries. And success is the word that captures the events of the past several months. In a very short time, the Learning Commons has transformed the image, …

Why Tell The Truth When A Lie Will Do?: Re-Creations And Resistance In The Self-Authored Life Writing Of Five American Women Fiction Writers, Piper Gian Huguley May 2006

Why Tell The Truth When A Lie Will Do?: Re-Creations And Resistance In The Self-Authored Life Writing Of Five American Women Fiction Writers, Piper Gian Huguley

English Dissertations

As women began to establish themselves in the United States workforce in the first half of the twentieth century, one especial group of career women, women writers, began to use the space of their self-authored life writing narratives to inscribe their own understanding of themselves. Roundly criticized for not adhering to conventional autobiographical standards, these women writers used purposeful political strategies of resistance to craft self-authored life writing works that varied widely from the genre of autobiography. Rather than employ the usual ways critiquing autobiographical texts, I explore a deeper understanding of what these prescient women sought to do. Through …

Portland State Magazine

PSU’s alumni magazine, published 2-3 times a year. In this issue: Portland State’s campaign to raise $100 million is exceeding its goal and establishing new prominence in scholarship, research, and teaching; enthusiastic engineering students are up for the challenge of high-altitude balloons; this professor puts his money in something that makes mathematical sense: poker; for two June graduates and two Vanport alumni, the university provides vastly different experiences; abuse of foreign maids in Asia and the Middle East caught Patrick Augustine’s attention—enough to make him do something about it; and more.

The Birkat Ha-Minim And Its Relationship To The Johannine Situation In The First Century, Matthew C. Versdahl Apr 2006

The Birkat Ha-Minim And Its Relationship To The Johannine Situation In The First Century, Matthew C. Versdahl

Doctor of Ministry

In the discussion of Christian origins, Judaism, and their relationship to the gospel of John, the Birkat ha-minim remains an important element; particularly as it pertains to the occurrence of άποσυνάγωγος; in John 9:22; 12:42; and 16:2 and John's pejorative presentation of the 'Ιουδαιοι. Some have contended that it explains why, in these verses, Jewish followers of Jesus were ostracized from the synagogue which resulted in John's animosity in the use of 'Ιουδαιοι. In other words, they hold that the Birkat ha-minim functioned as a means of programmatic expulsion of Jewish Christians from the synagogue in …

New Exodus And No Exodus In Jeremiah 26-45 Promise And Warning To The Exiles In Babylon, Gary Yates Jan 2006

New Exodus And No Exodus In Jeremiah 26-45 Promise And Warning To The Exiles In Babylon, Gary Yates

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Seeking to contribute to the discussion of the booh of Jeremiah as a literary unity, this study examines the contrast between the promise of new exodus in Jeremiah 30-33 and the experience of the remnant in Judah after the fall of Jerusalem that is recounted in Jeremiah 40-43 as a reversal of the exodus. This contrast of 'new exodus ' and 'no exodus ' serves as both a promise and warning to the exilic community in Babylon - the promise that they are to be the recipients of the blessings of restoration and a warning that continued disobedience to YHWH …
