Isaiah 53: Grammatical, Structural And Exegetical Observations, Felipe Braz Federson
Isaiah 53: Grammatical, Structural And Exegetical Observations, Felipe Braz Federson
Masters Theses
Isaiah 52:13-53:12 is a famous passage from the Tanakh that contains important grammatical constructions in Hebrew which, if translated incorrectly, can lead to erroneous exegetical and theological conclusions. Among these problems, the Servant’s relationship with the other characters in the passage is addressed. Through an analysis of the literary context and the structure of the text, not only are several exegetical possibilities substantiated, but two prototype translations are also provided, one based on the Leningrad Codex and another based on the Great Isaiah Scroll (1QIsa).

Y-Dna For Paternal Lineage Research, Jaymes Mozingo
Y-Dna For Paternal Lineage Research, Jaymes Mozingo
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Since 1999 Y-DNA testing has become a scientific mainstay for genetic studies, as well as a modern pastime among genealogical enthusiasts and researchers using objective data in the study of family lineages, particularly paternal line ancestors. The company that pioneered the use of this technology is one called Family Tree DNA.
Many DNA testing companies, i.e., websites like 23 and me, Ancestry, My True Heritage, etc focus primarily on Autosomal and Mitochondrial DNA, typically passed down from maternal lineages, however it has limitations when seeking a broader view with more depth into lineages that span over thousands of years as …

Jews And Urban Life, Leonard J. Greenspoon
Jews And Urban Life, Leonard J. Greenspoon
Studies in Jewish Civilization
Jews and Urban Life recognizes that throughout their long history, Jews have often inhabited cities. The reality of this urban experience ranged from ghetto restrictions to robust participation in a range of civic and social activities. Essays in this collection present relevant examples from within the Jewish community itself, moving historically from the biblical period to the modern-day State of Israel. Taking a comparative approach while recognizing the particulars of individual instances, authors examine these phenomena from a wide variety of approaches, genres, and media. Interdisciplinary and accessibly written, the articles display a multitude of instances throughout history showing the …
Sacred Symbioses And Feminine Succubi: Humoral Theory And Sexual Intercourse In Early Modern Europe, Naomi Silverman
Sacred Symbioses And Feminine Succubi: Humoral Theory And Sexual Intercourse In Early Modern Europe, Naomi Silverman
University of Massachusetts Undergraduate History Journal
Socio-medical tools for making sense of gender and sex in Early Modern Europe were grounded in humoralistic concepts traceable from classical medicine. Some modern scholars have analyzed the implications of the sexual dimorphism of humoral properties in terms of women’s status or men’s status. Still, little has focused on the actual interaction between the sexes. I use multiple mid-seventeenth-century treatises on women’s health and a contemporary love poem, as well as earlier humoral musings and recent scholarly works, to explore the role of sexual intercourse in Early Modern women’s humoral health.

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Any researcher is welcome to submit a paper for possible publication by F.A.R.M.S. One typed/printed copy (double-spaced and proofread) should be sent; it will not necessarily be returned.

Zelph
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In recent years, discussions of Book of Mormon geography have concentrated on limited areas in Mesoamerica. The story of "Zelph, the white Lamanite," is frequently cited as evidence that the Nephites occupied the entire North American continent and fought some of their final battles near the Illinois River. Who was Zelph, and are his bones relevant to the Book of Mormon? Researcher Kenneth Godfrey shows why one should be cautious in drawing specific geographical conclusions from this incident.

Publishing The Pan-Jewish: The First Hebrew Newspaper And Its Modernities, Philip E. Keisman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Publishing the Pan-Jewish emerges from a question about sites of synthesis between claims of sacred continuity and novel forms of communication. It centers on the first ten years of Hamagid (1856-1866), acknowledged within the historiography as history’s first Hebrew-language newspaper. Eliezer Lipman Silberman, an Orthodox butcher founded Hamagid in East Prussia as a bulwark of his vision of traditional Judaism. The first chapter of this dissertation examines the formal elements of the newspaper as a medium, demonstrating the myriad ways in which it presented novel experiences for its reading public. Chapter two narrates an untold history of the newspaper’s early …
