Surface Composition And Interaction Of Thermally Treated White Oak With White Sprits, Roy Douglas Wilcox Dec 2006

Surface Composition And Interaction Of Thermally Treated White Oak With White Sprits, Roy Douglas Wilcox

Doctoral Dissertations

The surface composition and energy of two thermally treated white oak stave sources and the acidic composition of their white spirit extracts were studied to determine whether composition of the maturing extract could be attributed to variability in surface composition due to degradation of lignin, cellulose, and extractives with thermal treatment and extraction. The sources were from the Ozarks and Appalachia. Surface composition was determined by X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Surface energy was obtained from the wicking method of contact angle determination with probe liquids and application of the van Oss geometric mean equation. Acid-base properties and composition of the …

Methylsilane Derived Sic Particle Coatings Produced By Fluid-Bed Chemical Vapor Deposition, James Henry Miller Dec 2006

Methylsilane Derived Sic Particle Coatings Produced By Fluid-Bed Chemical Vapor Deposition, James Henry Miller

Doctoral Dissertations

This report describes the research effort that was undertaken to develop and understand processing techniques for the deposition of both low and high density SiC coatings from a non-halide precursor, in support of the Generation IV Gas-Cooled Fast Reactor (GFR) fuel development program.

The research was conducted in two phases. In the first phase, the feasibility of producing both porous SiC coatings and dense SiC coatings on surrogate fuel particles by fluidized bed chemical vapor deposition (FBCVD) using gas mixtures of methylsilane and argon was demonstrated. In the second phase, a combined experimental and modeling effort was carried out in …

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

On 28 February 2000, a volcanic cloud from Hekla volcano, Iceland, was serendipitously sampled by a DC-8 research aircraft during the SAGE III Ozone Loss and Validation Experiment (SOLVE I). It was encountered at night at 10.4 km above sea level (in the lower stratosphere) and 33–34 hours after emission. The cloud is readily identified by abundant SO2 (≤1 ppmv), HCl (≤70 ppbv), HF (≤60 ppbv), and particles (which may have included fine silicate ash). We compare observed and modeled cloud compositions to understand its chemical evolution. Abundances of sulfur and halogen species indicate some oxidation of sulfur gases but …

Cather-Pound Redesign, Jason Seckman May 2006

Cather-Pound Redesign, Jason Seckman

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Cather Pound - Redesign addresses the redevelopment of the Cather Pound Residence Complex located on north 17th Street on the University of Nebraska, Lincoln campus. These upperclassmen dormitories were hastily built in the 1960’s during a period of rapid growth for the university. These corridor style dorms were originally designed for double occupancy, but are now more often used by only one student. As our student culture changes the university is building more popular suite and apartment style residences. The archaic nature of dense student housing that these new units are replacing, becomes more apparent, and thus a redesign of …

Animal Husbandry At Tell El Hesi (Israel): Results From Zooarchaeological And Isotopic Analysis, Shannon Marie Peck-Janssen Apr 2006

Animal Husbandry At Tell El Hesi (Israel): Results From Zooarchaeological And Isotopic Analysis, Shannon Marie Peck-Janssen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Located in today’s southern Israel, Tell el Hesi provides archaeologists with important clues to political and social changes in the ancient Near East. Zooarchaeological and stable isotopic analyses were conducted to evaluate shifts in animal husbandry practices during changing socioeconomic and sociopolitical conditions in the southern Levant.

During the Early Bronze Age, Tell el Hesi thrived as an agricultural grain producing center for the southern Levant. The acropolis served as both a storage and redistribution center for the inhabitants of Tell el Hesi. Coinciding with the collapse of the southern Levant, Tell el Hesi was abandoned throughout the Middle Bronze …

Predominance Of Amoeboid Forms Of Blastocystis Hominis In Isolates From Symptomatic Patients, Tan Tian Chye Jan 2006

Predominance Of Amoeboid Forms Of Blastocystis Hominis In Isolates From Symptomatic Patients, Tan Tian Chye

Tan Tian Chye

Blastocystis hominis is one of the most common human parasites that inhabit the intestinal tract. Conflicting reports continue to exist regarding the existence and the functional role of the amoeboid forms in the life cycle of the parasite. The present study investigates the presence of these forms in 20 isolates obtained from ten symptomatic and asymptomatic patients respectively. A total of 10,000 parasite cells per ml from each isolate were inoculated into three culture tubes each containing 3 ml of Jones' medium supplemented with 10% horse serum, incubated at 37 degrees C. The contents were examined daily for 10 days. …

An Overview Of Partial Least Squares, Dante M. Pirouz Jan 2006

An Overview Of Partial Least Squares, Dante M. Pirouz

Business Publications

Partial least squares analysis is a multivariate statistical technique that allows comparison between multiple response variables and multiple explanatory variables. Partial least squares is one of a number of covariance-based statistical methods which are often referred to as structural equation modeling or SEM. It was designed to deal with multiple regression when data has small sample, missing values, or multicollinearity. Partial least squares regression has been demonstrated on both real data and in simulations (Garthwaite, 1994, Tennenhaus, 1998). It has been very popular in hard science, especially chemistry and chemometrics, where there is a big problem with a high number …

Solvent Targeting, Avoidance And Recovery Trials (Start), Kealan Allen Jan 2006

Solvent Targeting, Avoidance And Recovery Trials (Start), Kealan Allen

Theses

Solvent is the largest-volume raw material used at Janssen Pharmaceutical (Ire) Ltd. Over 2.2 million m3 were used in 2004. The top 13 solvents make up 99% of this amount. There are two main uses for solvent on site, processing and cleaning. Processing uses 55% of the total solvent used on site, cleaning uses the remainder.

Waste solvent forms the majority of the hazardous waste produced at Janssen. Three treatment options exist at present for this waste: incineration, recovery for reuse and energy recovery. All of the hazardous waste produced on site must be exported for these treatment options, …

Solution-Based Synthesis Of Nitride Fuels, Kenneth Czerwinski, Thomas Hartmann Jan 2006

Solution-Based Synthesis Of Nitride Fuels, Kenneth Czerwinski, Thomas Hartmann

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

A wide variety of fuel concepts are considered for advanced reactor technology including metals, metal oxides or metal nitrides as solid solutions or composite materials. Nitride fuels have appropriate properties for advanced fuels including high thermal conductivity, thermal stability, solid-state solubility of actinides, fissile metal density, and suitable neutronic properties. A drawback of nitride fuels involves their synthesis. A key parameter for preparing oxide fuels is the precipitation step in the sol-gel process. For nitride fuels, the current synthetic route is carbothermic reduction from the oxide to the nitride. This process step is based on solid phase reactions and for …

Synthesis Of Vic-Dioxime Derivatives With Hydrazone Side Groups And Their Metal Complexes, İlknur Babahan, Hüseyi̇n Anil, Nursabah Sarikavakli

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Two novel vic-dioxime (L^1H_2, L^2H_2) compounds bearing hydrazone side groups and their transition metal complexes Ni(II), Co(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) were synthesized. The vic-dioxime ligands bearing hydrazone side groups were synthesized by reacting anti-glyoximehydrazine (GH_2) with 4-nitroacetophenone and 4-methylacetophenenone, respectively. Ligands form mononuclear complexes [(LH)_2M] with a metal to ligand ratio of 1:2 with M=Co(II)(H_2O)_2, Ni(II), and Cu(II). Zn(II) forms complexes [(LH)(H_2O)(Cl)Zn] with a metal to ligand ratio of 1:1. The Co(II) complexes of the ligands are proposed to be octahedral with water molecules as axial ligands, the Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes are proposed to be square planar, and the …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

A web-based version of CO2SYS program has been implemented to replace the current DOS based version system. The user does not have to download anything to a local computer, instead they can run the calculations online freely. For this new designed program, all the user inputs and options are displayed in one single window instead of several small black and white DOS screens. All the calculation results are listed in a single page, as well. The user can change any inputs and constants before and after the data calculation, i.e., recalculation. Much more powerful error checking has been built into …
