Advancing The Methodology For Cyclopenta[C]Thiophene Sythesis: A Step Toward Anit-Leukemia Agents And Improved Semiconductiors, Riley Jones

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Metal n5-cyclopenta[c]thienyl complexes are of significant interest in both catalysis and materials chemistry. These relatives of the low-band-gap polymer polybenzo[2,3-c]thiophene show great promise as environmentally stable conductive polymers and as energy-efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs) due to their unique electronic properties. Recently, studies have shown that cyclopenta[c]thiophene molecules are effective as photodynamic anticancer agents which are particularly aggressive toward leukemia cells. The current method of synthesizing these compounds is lengthy, costly, and has a very low yield. Our group has developed a novel one-step method to produce precursors of these compounds. This procedure increases product yields, eliminates the use of toxic …

Elements Of Human Decision-Making, Jens G. Pohl Aug 2006

Elements Of Human Decision-Making, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The purpose of this paper is to present some understandings of the human problem-solving activity that we have gained in the Collaborative Agent Design Research Center (CADRC) over the past two decades. Since we feel strongly that the human decision-maker should be an integral component of any computer-based decision-support system, it follows that we would have endeavored to incorporate many of the elements that appear to be important to the user in the design of these systems. The complexity of the human cognitive system is evidenced by the large body of literature that describes problem-solving behavior and the relatively fewer …

Structure-Activity Studies Of Glycosphingolipids As Antigens Of Natural Killer T Cells, Randal Donald Goff Jul 2006

Structure-Activity Studies Of Glycosphingolipids As Antigens Of Natural Killer T Cells, Randal Donald Goff

Theses and Dissertations

Glycosphingolipids (GSLs), composed of a polar saccharide head and a lipophilic ceramide tail, are ubiquitous components of the plasma membrane of eukaryotic cells. They serve in many regulatory capacities and have antigenic properties towards natural killer T (NKT) cells of the innate immune system. Critical to the recognition of glycosylceramides by NKT cells are antigen presenting cells (APC), such as dendritic cells, which are responsible for binding, processing, and delivery of ligands to these lymphocytes. This event is mediated by CD1d, a major histocompatibility complex-like protein expressed on the surface of APCs, which binds GSL antigens by the ceramide moiety …

The Synthesis Of Zinc Oxide By Direct And Indirect Methods, Grainne Duffy Jul 2006

The Synthesis Of Zinc Oxide By Direct And Indirect Methods, Grainne Duffy

Masters

The synthesis of zinc oxide through three routes was investigated; carboxylic acid chelation, polymer assisted synthesis in an alcoholic medium and slow thermolysis of precursor. In the case of carboxylic acid chelation, it was determined that the rate at which the precursor is formed has a significant effect on the quality of zinc oxide particles produced. Investigation of the effect of concentration, pH and species of chelating agent used on the purity and structure of product was undertaken. Examination of the composition and morphology of materials produced revealed the presence of single-crystalline spheres, the packing density and aggregation morphology of …

Synthesis Of Aspernigrin A, Erica Joerger Apr 2006

Synthesis Of Aspernigrin A, Erica Joerger

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Aspernigrin A is a compound correlated with inhibiting the growth of cancer cells in the colon. A five-step synthesis was designed for aspernigrin A, projected to yield four intermediates and the final product. The intermediates were analyzed by high field 1HNMR and FT-IR spectroscopy before proceeding to the next step. A model pyridone ring system was successfully prepared from a commercially available pyrone precursor in two steps. These results provide a proof of concept that the synthetic scheme should successfully yield the natural product.

Synthesis Of Low K1 Projection Lithography Utilizing Interferometry, Frank Cropanese Feb 2006

Synthesis Of Low K1 Projection Lithography Utilizing Interferometry, Frank Cropanese

Theses

Interference lithography has been widely utilized as a tool for the evaluation of photoresist materials, as well as emerging resolution enhancement techniques. The interferometric approach is both simple and inexpensive to implement, however it is limited in its ability to examine the impact of defocus due to the inherently large DOF (Depth-of-Focus) in two-beam interference. Alternatively, the demodulation of the aerial image that occurs as a result of defocus in a projection system may be synthesized using a two pass exposure with the interferometric method. The simulated aerial image modulation for defocused projection systems has been used to calculate the …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Knoevenagel condensation of 2-formyl-octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole with selected 1,3-indanedione derivatives yields calix[4]pyrrole anion sensors with push-pull chromophores displaying strong intramolecular charge transfer. The push-pull feature results in augmented signal output as well as in dramatic changes in anion selectivity exemplified by a 50-fold increase in acetate vs chloride selectivity compared to the parent calix[4]pyrrole.

Design Synthesis From Interaction And State-Based Specifications, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong Jan 2006

Design Synthesis From Interaction And State-Based Specifications, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Interaction-based and state-based modeling are two complementary approaches of behavior modeling. The former focuses on global interactions between system components. The latter concentrates on the internal states of individual components. Both approaches have been proven useful in practice. One challenging and important research objective is to combine the modeling power of both effectively and then use the combination as the basis for automatic design synthesis. We present a combination of interaction-based and state-based modeling, namely, Live Sequence Charts and Z, for system specification. We then propose a way of generating distributed design from the combinations. Our approach handles systems with …

Involvement Of Akt In Er-To-Golgi Transport Of Scap/Srebp: A Link Between A Key Cell Proliferative Pathway And Membrane Synthesis, X Du, Ika Kristiana, Jenny Wong, A Brown

Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute

Akt is a critical regulator of cell growth, proliferation, and survival that is activated by phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K). We investigated the effect of PI3K inhibition on activation of sterol regulatory element binding protein-2 (SREBP-2), a master regulator of cholesterol homeostasis. SREBP-2 processing increased in response to various cholesterol depletion approaches (including statin treatment) and this increase was blunted by treatment with a potent and specific inhibitor of PI3K, LY294002, or when a plasmid encoding a dominant-negative form of Akt (DN-Akt) was expressed. LY294002 also suppressed SREBP-2 processing induced by insulin-like growth factor-1. Furthermore, LY294002 treatment down-regulated SREBP-2 or -1c gene …

Asymmetric Synthesis Of Anti-1,2-Amino Alcohols Via The Borono-Mannich Reaction: A Formal Synthesis Of (-)-Swainsonine, Christopher W. G. Au, Stephen G. Pyne

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Chiral α-hydroxy-aldehydes generated in situ by the ADH reaction of vinyl sulfones undergo a borono-Mannich reaction with β-styrenyl boronic acid and primary amines to give anti-1,2-amino alcohols in high enantiomeric purities (ee 83-95%). This new method allows much more rapid access to these valuable chiral building blocks that has been used in a short formal synthesis (10 synthetic steps from 4-penten-1-ol) of (-)-swainsonine.

Computer Science Department Faculty Publication Series

A wide variety of data sets produced by individual investigators are now synthesized to address ecological questions that span a range of spatial and temporal scales. It is important to facilitate such syntheses so that ‘‘consumers’’ of data sets can be confident that both input data sets and synthetic products are reliable. Necessary documentation to ensure the reliability and validation of data sets includes both familiar descriptive metadata and formal documentation of the scientific processes used (i.e., process metadata) to produce usable data sets from collections of raw data. Such documentation is complex and difficult to construct, so it is …

Effect Of Nitric Oxide On Oxygen Consumption Of Skeletal Muscle, Christina Lyn Cox Jan 2006

Effect Of Nitric Oxide On Oxygen Consumption Of Skeletal Muscle, Christina Lyn Cox

Theses and Dissertations

Mammalian cells require a continuous and sufficient supply of oxygen to carry out their functions. The oxygen pathway has an overall direction taking O2 from the air to the mitochondria, which is a result of the mitochondrial O2 consumption (VO2) NO various effects on the mitochondria: at low concentrations for short periods NO specifically and irreversibly inhibits cytochrome c and reversibly inhibits cytochrome c oxidase, to decrease VO2. Thus, NO can modulate VO2 of skeletal muscle. The purpose of the present study was to measure VO2 of the rat spinotrapezius muscle under conditions of altered NO. The methods used provide …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Metal Complexes Of Cu(Ii), Ni(Ii), Zn(Ii), Co(Ii), Mn(Ii) And Cd(Ii) With Tetradentate Schiff Bases, Jianning Liu, Bo-Wan Wu, Bing Zhang, Yongchun Liu

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

4-(Benzeneazo)salicylaldehyde was synthesized with aniline, sodium nitrite and salicylaldehyde. Two tetradentate ligands, N,N'-bis[4-(benzeneazo) salicylaldehyde]-o-phenylenediamine (H_2L) and N,N'-bis[4-(benzeneazo) salicylaldehyde]ethylenediamine (H_2L') were formed by the 2:1 molar condensation of 4-(benzeneazo) salicylaldehyde with o-phenylenediamine or ethylenediamine. Their Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Co(II), Mn(II) and Cd(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductivity measurements, and infrared and electronic spectral data. Two ligands and their Ni(II) and Zn(II) complexes were further identified using ^1H NMR spectra. The results suggest that the metal is bonded to the ligand through the phenolic oxygen and the imino nitrogen.

Template Synthesis And Structural Characterization Of Homo Binuclear Chromium(Iii), Manganese(Iii), Iron(Iii), Cobalt(Iii), And Ruthenium(Iii) Complexes With Octaazamacrocyclic Ligands, Vinod K. Sharma, Shipra Srivastava Jan 2006

Template Synthesis And Structural Characterization Of Homo Binuclear Chromium(Iii), Manganese(Iii), Iron(Iii), Cobalt(Iii), And Ruthenium(Iii) Complexes With Octaazamacrocyclic Ligands, Vinod K. Sharma, Shipra Srivastava

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The Schiff base octaazamacrocyclic ligands derived from primary diamines and 3,6-dimethyl/diphenyl-4,5-diazaocta-3,5-diene-2,7-dione, and their binuclear complexes [M_2LCl_4]Cl_2 [M = Cr(III), Fe(III), Co(III), or Ru(III)] and [Mn_2L(AcO)_4](AcO)_2 were synthesized by template condensation reactions. Attempts to synthesize the corresponding metal-free macrocyclic ligands did not prove successful. The overall geometry and stereochemistry of these complexes were elucidated by elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibilities, electronic spectra, infrared spectra, molar conductance measurements, ^1H NMR, and thermogravimetric analysis. All the trivalent metal ion complexes appear to be 1:2 electrolytes. An octahedral geometry is proposed for all the complexes.
