The Impact Of Participation In The Johnson City, Tn Citizen's Police Academy., Angela Elkins
The Impact Of Participation In The Johnson City, Tn Citizen's Police Academy., Angela Elkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A Citizen's Police Academy allows citizens to attend the police academy to learn more about police departments and police work. While increasing in popularity, very little research has focused on participant impact. This study examines the impact of the Johnson City CPA on participants' attitudes and beliefs about police work. Surveys were analyzed to discover differences in age, education levels, gender and prior interest in police work concerning satisfaction, importance of training, and behavior change. Older respondents reported the most benefit from participation, while younger respondents were more likely to change their behaviors. Those with mid level educations gained the …

Personal And Professional Attributes Of Community And Traditional Police Officers Impacting Order Maintenance And Exercised Degrees Of Control: Phenomenology, Rickey L. Mitchell
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Community policing differs from traditional police work. It is a response to public and social pressures on policing to fill needed roles of prevention, as opposed to crime fighting. Literature stresses that community policing efforts incorporate the attitudes and perceptions of law enforcement officers, suggesting that certain learned and naturally-occurring personality traits among officers predispose success or failure in community policing efforts. To further the exploration of community policing, there is a need to qualify the personal and professional attributes of police officers and their impact on order maintenance and exercised degrees of control.
A qualitative, phenomenology study conducted on …

Indulge me for a few moments, will you? I write this column just as we approach the Thanksgiving. You will read it having spent the last few weeks recovering from the Christmas Holidays. It seems appropriate at this time, even conventional, to spend a few moments looking at what we all have to be thankful for, even joyous about. All too often the quotidian cares of life weigh us down unceremoniously, and we forget that we have much to be thankful for.
An Examination Of User Resistance In Mandatory Adoption Of Enterprise Systems, Timothy Paul Klaus
An Examination Of User Resistance In Mandatory Adoption Of Enterprise Systems, Timothy Paul Klaus
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
User resistance is an important issue in the implementation of an Enterprise System (ES). However, despite the prevalence of user adoption literature, user resistance literature is scarce. Although some studies have conceptualized user resistance as the opposite of user adoption, a mandatory, role-transforming system such as an ES clearly shows that users may use a system while resisting it. Although this area is highly relevant, it is theoretically underdeveloped. This study examines user resistance at the individual level of analysis to determine the underlying reasons for user resistance, the types of resistant behaviors, and the management strategies to minimize resistance. …

Global Landscapes: A Speculative Assessment Of Emerging Organizational Structures Within The International Wine Industry, D. K. Aylward
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
As a rapidly evolving sector the international wine industry represents an interesting subject for analysis. Over the past two centuries the industry has experienced a number of major innovations and direction changes. The organizational shifts involved in these changes have been profound. From a monopolization of wine culture through the 19th and much of the 20th century by Europeans, to the emergence of New World operators and their democratic influence, the international wine industry now stands at the edge of another major paradigm shift. This paper traces the industry’s historical changes and speculates on the implications of such issues as …

Human Resources Management: An Exploration Of Strategic Human Resources Management In Michigan Police Organizations, Jason L. Hunt
Human Resources Management: An Exploration Of Strategic Human Resources Management In Michigan Police Organizations, Jason L. Hunt
Masters Theses
There exists in the law enforcement community an antiquated notion that reactive management policies and practices are sufficient for the day-to-day operations of police organizations (Tafoya 1986,1990; Manning, 1997; Anderson, 2000). The law enforcement community remains highly resistant to change and unfortunately maintaining the ‘status quo’ inhibits the ability of police organizations to prepare for the uncertainties of an ever-changing environment (Tafoya, 1990; Manning, 1997; Anderson 2000).
The research presented here demonstrates the need for the law enforcement community to evaluate management strategies and move toward proactive management practices that are promoted from within the organization rather than from outside …

Performance Evaluation Models For Strategic Decision-Making: Towards A Hybrid Model, Geraldina Villalobos Quezada
Dissertations
Performance management systems serve strategic, administrative, and developmental purposes; therefore, their role in an organization cannot be overestimated. As a function of this strategic role, different evaluation models have been developed and implemented by organizations: BSC, CIPP, TQM, Six Sigma, and AOP.
Following a review of current evaluation theory and practice models that focus on improving strategic decision-making in organizations, four research questions were developed that sought to identify the interrelationships, evaluation components, evaluation indicators, data collected to support the evaluation, evaluation implementation protocols, quantitative and qualitative analyses, outcomes, and critical factors of the BSC and CIPP models.

Implementation Of Coeus Grant Management Software At The Desert Research Institute, Patricia Kingsmill
Implementation Of Coeus Grant Management Software At The Desert Research Institute, Patricia Kingsmill
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The Internet and electronic commerce have opened up new opportunities for efficiency in research administration. Public Law 106-107 or the Federal Financial Assistance Improvement Act signed on November 20, 1999 and the President's Management Agenda have formally charged federal grant-making agencies with creating a single electronic system to find and apply for federal grant opportunities. In response to this directive, recipient organizations will need the ability to electronically prepare and submit proposal information and receive funding data from the sponsoring agency. This project reviews the implementation of a software package, MIT's Coeus Grant Management System, as a solution to the …

Today’S Dot And The Quest For More Accountable Organizational Structures, Lenahan O'Connell, Juita-Elena (Wie) Yusuf, Merl Hackbart, Donald L. Hartman, Candice Wallace, Doug Kreis
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
This study investigates the impact of DOT organizational structures on effective transportation planning and performance. A review of the 50 state DOT authorizing statutes and DOT organizational charts found minimal differences in organizational structures among the states. However, 37 states have quasi-independent commissions (sometimes called boards, or councils.) A statistical analysis showed that the commission states have higher Government Performance Project (GPP) scores than the non-commission states. The analysis suggested that effective commissions avoid having members represent geographical regions and political parties and avoid giving the commission the power to select the director of the DOT. In addition the states …

School Psychologists' Perceived Concerns Regarding Crisis Intervention With Diverse Populations, Ana E. Kemple
Theses and Dissertations
With the ever-increasing diversity among students in the United States, American schools are seeing more of a mismatch between school personnel and students. Service provision has traditionally addressed multicultural competencies in the area of assessment and more recently in counseling procedures. With the increased attention given to school-related crises, the role of school psychologists has expanded to include crisis intervention. The current study will present information on the need for multicultural competencies in crisis intervention and assess the current concerns of nationally certified school psychologists in this area of service provision. Responses from a random sample of school psychologists (n= …

Understanding Worker Motivation In The Australian Film Industry, M. L. Jones, George K. Kriflik, M. Zanko
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
The Australian Film Industry operates in an environment which is uniquely challenging. Workers in the industry continuously face hardships which outweigh the benefits. This research seeks to understand how workers overcome the hardships and apparently consistently invest inequitable proportions of labour and skills to maximise their performance. Whether people will work hard or not bears strongly on their level of motivation. Motivation in the Australian Film Industry is determined by three sets of identified factors. These are modifiers which stem from the producer’s influence and internal and external drivers which arise from the individual. Using Grounded Theory this research will …
Changing Manufacturing Practices: An Appraisal Of The Processual Approach, Patrick M. Dawson
Changing Manufacturing Practices: An Appraisal Of The Processual Approach, Patrick M. Dawson
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
There has been a longstanding interest in human factors and the processes of change in manufacturing organizations. This paper focuses attention on the establishment and contribution of a processual perspective to understanding change. A history of the processual approach is outlined and some of the main defining elements and ongoing developments are appraised. Field data drawn from a study of cellular work arrangements at a mirror manufacturing plant is used to highlight the interlocking and overlapping dynamics between substance, context, and politics. In advocating the benefits of a processual perspective, it is argued that during the uptake of cellular manufacturing …

Corporate Change Management In Asian Business - A Comparison Between Chinese-Educated And English-Educated Chinese Entrepreneurs In Singapore, Thomas Menkhoff, Ulrike Badibanga, Yue Wah Chay
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Against the background of a rapidly changing business environment, the article examines the organizational change management behavior of the owner-managers of small and medium-sized enterprises in Singapore. The analysis of survey data is aimed at ascertaining whether there are any differences between Chinese and English-educated small (Chinese) businessmen in terms of Change Management (CM), a dichotomy that is of great historical and politico-cultural significance in Singapore. The survey data show that there are indeed differences between the subgroups (e. g. with regard to the initiation of a more participatory people management style) but these variations turned out to be far …

Notions of social responsibility have become fashionable in businesses. While clearly a marketing ploy for some, for other firms CSR appears to represent a genuine commitment to new practices and organization-wide learning. Encouraged by these positive cases, we explored the extent to which CSR might create a site for critical learning in workplaces.

Worker Commitment In The Australian Film Industry, M. L. Jones, George K. Kriflik, M. Zanko
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Worker commitment in the Australian Film Industry is examined in this paper. Workers express a perceived inequity with regard to the inputs versus their outcomes. However, their continued engagement and persistent hard work in the industry would indicate a state of equity. Adams’ Equity Theory has been used in this research as a tool to help uncover the various factors which work to implicitly return equity to film workers. The commitment factors that have emerged through the research are discussed, and are considered in light of the factors which have surfaced through a preliminary literature review.

Building Skills F2f – Using Chat Reference Techniques, Darcy C. Del Bosque, Kimberly Chapman
Library Faculty Publications
The UTSA Library, like many organizations, has been experiencing a period of rapid growth and change. Even positive change can cause stress in departments, and one way to help employees deal with change, while still providing customer-oriented service, is to establish a regular forum for discussion that encourages departmental communication.
Training is an important aspect of employee development; however, the literature indicates that, in many organizations, training is often given little attention and relegated to the sidelines due to other demands on staff. With the hiring of new personnel, including a new Head of Reference and a Training Coordinator, the …
The Way It Really Happened: Competing Narratives In The Political Process Of Technological Change, Patrick M. Dawson, D. Buchanan
The Way It Really Happened: Competing Narratives In The Political Process Of Technological Change, Patrick M. Dawson, D. Buchanan
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Corporate narratives concerning technological change are often constructed around a linear series of events that show the organization in a positive light to internal and external observers. These narratives often sanitize the change process, and present data from which commentators can formulate neat linear prescriptions on how to implement new technology. In contrast, this paper draws on processual-contextual theoretical perspectives to argue that technological change is a more complex political process represented by multiple ongoing narratives which compete with each other for dominance as definitive change accounts. A central aim of this paper, therefore, is to demonstrate the analytical significance …
