A micro-machined drug delivery device and method of use for the delivery of labile drugs is disclosed. A micro-machined sensing device and method of use is also disclosed. A micro-machined drug delivery and sensing device and method of use is additionally disclosed. All three devices are intended to be inserted into a patient's body. The drug delivery devices allow for the mixing of drug components prior to the release of the mixture into the patient's body where the mixture is labile. The micro-machined sensing device is suitable for monitoring the concentration of a specific chemical in a patient's body fluids …

Multiple Testing. Part Ii. Step-Down Procedures For Control Of The Family-Wise Error Rate, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Sandrine Dudoit, Katherine S. Pollard
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
The present article proposes two step-down multiple testing procedures for asymptotic control of the family-wise error rate (FWER): the first procedure is based on maxima of test statistics (step-down maxT), while the second relies on minima of unadjusted p-values (step-down minP). A key feature of our approach is the test statistics null distribution (rather than data generating null distribution) used to derive cut-offs (i.e., rejection regions) for these test statistics and the resulting adjusted p-values. For general null hypotheses, corresponding to submodels for the data generating distribution, we identify an asymptotic domination condition for a null distribution under which the …

Litter (n = 8,424) and female performance records were collected in two breed-to-wean production units in order to evaluate genetic line differences for sow longevity and maternal performance over four parities. Lines evaluated were American Diamond Genetics, Danbred North America, Dekalb-Monsanto DK44, Dekalb-Monsanto GPK347, Newsham Hybrids, and National Swine Registry. Females within a line were derived from a minimum of 65 sires, 197 dams (three dams per sire), and a maximum of three daughters per dam, except in the GPK347, which were produced using semen from 12 Nebraska Index boars mated with Dekalb-Monsanto Line 34 females. All lines expressed 100% …

Where Are The Women Geoscientist Professors?, Mary Anne Holmes, Suzanne O'Connell
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Nearly 50 geo- and social scientists recently gathered for a workshop on women in the geosciences. The two-fold purpose was to compile data on the status of women in the geosciences, and to arrive at a consensus on strategies to increase the proportion of women and their diversity in the field. The Workshop on Women in the Geosciences was held September 25-27, 2003, in Washington, D.C.

Race, Religion, And Attitudes Toward Capital Punishment: A Test Of Attribution Theory, Sheila M. Schlaupitz
Race, Religion, And Attitudes Toward Capital Punishment: A Test Of Attribution Theory, Sheila M. Schlaupitz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The present study attempts to provide a more thorough understanding of public attitudes toward capital punishment. Two theories are tested toward this end, utilizing a random sample taken from the jury pool in Hillsborough County, Florida.
First, An indirect test of reference group theory demonstrates the degree to which faith group, religiosity, and race affect public attitudes toward the death penalty. Surprisingly, there is little, albeit mixed, support for reference group theory as it attempts to explain attitudes toward capital punishment. Using the relationships between religion and capital punishment attitudes that we presumed would emerge from the test of reference …
Improved Methods And System For Watermarking Halftone Images, Phil Sherry
Improved Methods And System For Watermarking Halftone Images, Phil Sherry
Theses
Watermarking is becoming increasingly important for content control and authentication. Watermarking seamlessly embeds data in media that provide additional information about that media. Unfortunately, watermarking schemes that have been developed for continuous tone images cannot be directly applied to halftone images. Many of the existing watermarking methods require characteristics that are implicit in continuous tone images, but are absent from halftone images. With this in mind, it seems reasonable to develop watermarking techniques specific to halftones that are equipped to work in the binary image domain. In this thesis, existing techniques for halftone watermarking are reviewed and improvements are developed …

LIMITATIONS ON ENFORCEMENT OF UNFAIR BUSINESS COMPETITION LAWS. INITIATIVE STATUTE. Amends unfair business competition laws to: limit individual's right to sue by allowing private enforcement only if that individual has been actually injured by, and suffered financial/property loss because of an unfair business practice; require representative claims to comply with procedural requirements applicable to class action lawsuits; authorize only California Attorney General or local public officials to sue on behalf of general public to enforce unfair business competition laws. Penalties recovered by Attorney General or local prosecutors to be used only for enforcement of consumer protection laws. Summary of estimate …

On-Site Wastewater Treatment System, Phil Kappen, Russell Dickerson
SDSU Extension Circulars
Most rural homes in South Dakota are served by an on-site, wastewater treatment system or septic system, but many rural residents do not have the basic information they need to properly operate and maintain their septic systems. There is often a sense of "out of sight, out of mind" when dealing with an on-site system. The purpose of this manual to provide the homeowner with that information. If an on-site system is to fulfill its intended function and properly treat wastewater, three items are necessary. The first two items, proper system design and installation, are the responsibility of the system …

Segregating Transgenic Grains: Results Of A Survey Among Country Elevators In South Dakota, Bashir Qasmi, Clayton J. Wilhelm, Evert Van Der Sluis
Economics Research Reports
In 2002, cash receipts from crop production in South Dakota totaled $1.76 billion, accounting for 38 % of all receipts of agricultural producers in the state (South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service, 2003). The three most important crops grown in South Dakota are soybeans, corn, and wheat. In 2001, South Dakota ranked 8th in the production of corn and soybean and 9th in wheat production among the nation's crop producing states (South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service, 2003). These three crops accounted for 86 % of all cash receipts from marketing crops in the state. Due to the state's reliance on grain …

Examining Economic Impact And Recovery In South Dakota From The 2002 Drought, Matthew Diersen, Gary Taylor
Examining Economic Impact And Recovery In South Dakota From The 2002 Drought, Matthew Diersen, Gary Taylor
Economics Staff Paper Series
During the 2002 drought, farm sector economic factors were monitored to assess the likely statewide economic impacts. Timely moisture during the spring of 2003 resulted in a sizeable wheat harvest relative to recent years. Prices in the fall of 2003 have also been significantly higher for cattle and soybeans compared to prices in recent years. As a result, there have been inquiries as to the extent of economic recovery in the farm sector of South Dakota. The purpose of this paper is to outline the estimation procedure used to assess the drought in 2002, validate the extent of the impact, …

This research aims to prove that sound economic policies are nothing more that basic conditions for the foreign public debt problem. In fact, by studying the factors of public debt issues in Peru, Latin America and the emerging economies it’s clear that some implicit economic and non-economic factors have to be considered because of the social complexity and variable characteristics in emerging economies. This causes failures in economic policies assumptions, inefficiencies, distorted causality and nonrational behavior. This paper proposes, first, to perform a deep and comparative analysis of the foreign debt determinants in emerging economies, then, to allocate financial resources, …

Prediction Of Dopant Ionization Energies In Silicon: The Importance Of Strain, A. Rockett, Duane D. Johnson, S. V. Khare, B. R. Tuttle

Based on a hydrogenic state and strain changes upon defect charging, we propose a simple, parameter-free model that agrees well with the observed group III and V monovalent-impurity ionization energies in Si, revealing the importance of such strain effects. Changes in lattice strain upon defect charging are obtained via superposition and elasticity theory using atomic relaxations from density functional theory.
