Predators And Life Histories Shape Lestes Damselfly Assemblages Along A Freshwater Habitat Gradient, Robby Stoks, Mark A. Mcpeek Oct 2002

Predators And Life Histories Shape Lestes Damselfly Assemblages Along A Freshwater Habitat Gradient, Robby Stoks, Mark A. Mcpeek

Dartmouth Scholarship

Survey data from New England showed that assemblages of Lestes dam- selflies are organized along the entire gradient of pond permanence and predator presence. One assemblage occupies vernal ponds lacking large dragonfly predators and fish; four are largely confined to temporary ponds that typically contain dragonfly predators; one dom- inates fishless permanent ponds and lakes where dragonflies are the top predators; and one dominates permanent ponds and lakes where fish are the top predators. We determined the role of life history and predation in maintaining this striking pattern by conducting a series of transplant experiments in the field and a …

Chemistry Of High-Oxidation-State Groups V And Vi Complexes : Novel Silyl And Imido Complexes And The Reactions Of Silyl And Alkyl Alkylidyne Complexes With Oxygen, Tianniu Chen May 2002

Chemistry Of High-Oxidation-State Groups V And Vi Complexes : Novel Silyl And Imido Complexes And The Reactions Of Silyl And Alkyl Alkylidyne Complexes With Oxygen, Tianniu Chen

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation describes the synthesis and characterization of the novel early transition metal (especially group VI metals) complexes free of anionic nligands such as cyclopentadienyl (Cp) and studies of their reactions with oxygen and silanes.

A Chronosequence Study Of Modern Vertisols And Application To Interpreting The Time Significance Of Paleozoic Paleovertisols, Amelia Carol Robinson May 2002

A Chronosequence Study Of Modern Vertisols And Application To Interpreting The Time Significance Of Paleozoic Paleovertisols, Amelia Carol Robinson

Masters Theses

Claystone paleosols are common throughout the rock record (e.g., Pennington Fm., Upper Mississippian, TN) and formed in a variety of depositional environments. Studies of paleosols indicate that there is significant retention of primary soil features (i.e. slickensides, silgai and oriented clay fabric) that are indicative of the Vertisol soil order. These clay-rich soils form from shrink-swell processes associated with seasonal moisture deficit and increased evapotranspiration. The high bulk density, abundance of fine clays, and low topographic position aids in the formation and preservation of Vertisols in the rock record. Most soils form on stable surfaces where pedogenic processes, such as …

Effects Of Developmental Activities On Streamside Salamander Communities In Boone County, West Virginia, Mindy S. Hamilton Jan 2002

Effects Of Developmental Activities On Streamside Salamander Communities In Boone County, West Virginia, Mindy S. Hamilton

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A study was conducted from May 1998 through June 1999 in three streams associated with mountaintop mining and valley fills in Boone County, West Virginia. Streamside salamander communities were monitored in these streams, as well as in two relatively undisturbed reference streams in the region, using refugia bags, rock-on-rock methodology, and day surveys. The relative abundance of salamanders was compared between the streams in order to detect effects of the associated valley fills to downstream biota. Relative abundance was lower in two of three streams associated with valley fills as compared to the reference streams. However, there was no significant …

Hydrogeology Of The Sistema Huautla Karst Groundwater Basin Association For Mexican Cave Studies Bulletin, Vol. 9, 2002, James H. Smith Jr. Jan 2002

Hydrogeology Of The Sistema Huautla Karst Groundwater Basin Association For Mexican Cave Studies Bulletin, Vol. 9, 2002, James H. Smith Jr.

KIP Articles

Sistema Huautla, in 2002 the world’s seventh deepest cave, at 1,475 meters, is one of the most complex vertical drainage systems in the world. The focus of this research was to study the geology, karst hydrology, and speleology of the Sistema Huautla cave system. Literature review and subsequent field mapping identified the geologic formations and tectonic structures that Sistema Huautla and tributary caves are developed within. Structural geology studies within the aquifer indicate that base-level conduits in the mapped portion of the aquifer are formed along a major normal fault system called the Sistema Huautla Fault. Conduits in other sections …

A zero‐dimensional (0‐D) model has been applied to study the sources of hydrogen oxide radicals (HOx = HO2 + OH) in the tropical upper troposphere during the Pacific Exploratory Mission in the tropics (PEM‐Tropics B) aircraft mission over the South Pacific in March–April 1999. Observations made across the Southern Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ) and the southern branch of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) provided the opportunity to contrast the relative contributions of different sources of HOx, in a nitrogen oxide radical (NOx)‐limited regime, in relatively pristine tropical air. The primary sources of HOx …

A mesoscale 3D model (Meso‐NH) is used to assess the relative importance of convection (transport and scavenging), chemistry, and advection in the vertical redistribution of HOx and their precursors in the upper tropical troposphere. The study is focused on marine deep convection over the South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ) during the PEM‐Tropics B Flight 10 aircraft mission. The model reproduces well the HOx mixing ratios. Vertical variations and the contrast between north and south of the SPCZ for O3 are captured. Convection uplifted O3‐poor air at higher altitude, creating a minimum in the 9–12 km …
