Ethnic Identity, Acculturation Attitudes And Self-Esteem In Rural High School Students, Concetta Posella
Ethnic Identity, Acculturation Attitudes And Self-Esteem In Rural High School Students, Concetta Posella
Theses
The current study used questionnaires in order to survey a sample of rural high school students regarding their self-esteem, attitudes toward acculturation, and their sense of ethnic identity. Students' ratings of self-esteem were not related to their sense of ethnic or racial identity nor their generational status, or how far removed they are from their cultural background. However, when acculturation attitudes were examined, the results were somewhat unexpected. The students who endorsed integration, or the idea that immigrants should both maintain their cultural traditions and try to adapt to their new culture, reported higher levels of self-esteem and identified themselves …
Tracking Control Of Uncertain Systems, Chaouki T. Abdallah, V. Koltchinski, S. Efromovich, G.L. Heileman
Tracking Control Of Uncertain Systems, Chaouki T. Abdallah, V. Koltchinski, S. Efromovich, G.L. Heileman
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Deals with the problem of designing output tracking controllers for uncertain systems. The systems we consider may be non-minimum phase but are restricted to be linear. The problem is motivated by control applications where a desired output trajectory is specified, and the corresponding input to the system is to be found.

The Zlab Color Appearance Model For Practical Image Reproduction Applications, Mark Fairchild
The Zlab Color Appearance Model For Practical Image Reproduction Applications, Mark Fairchild
Presentations and other scholarship
At its May, 1997 meeting in Kyoto, CIE TC1-34 considered 4 proposed color appearance models for adoption as the CIECAM97s model. The ZLAB model was one of those considered. Although it was rejected by TC1-34 because of its simplicity, there are many situations (such as typical crossmedia image reproduction) for which a more complex model might not be necessary, or even useful. Thus, the ZLAB model is being published as a simpler alternative to CIECAM97s that retains many of its positive features.
Chinese Characters As Sources Of Design Of Furniture, Han-Lim Wee
Chinese Characters As Sources Of Design Of Furniture, Han-Lim Wee
Theses
This thesis is an exploration of possibilities of the translation of Chinese characters into furniture. It is not just the two dimensional image of the character that I wish to interpret into three dimensions, but I intend that the functions and uses of the furniture are to be the meaning of the word. The final pieces are intended to be recognized as to their meaning by anyone literate in Chinese character forms. Furniture that has both form and meaning will create new possibilities for furniture's role in the environment by having this extra dimension.
Chromatographic Methods Development For The Charcterization Of Phytopharaceutical Materials, Melanie Levesque
Chromatographic Methods Development For The Charcterization Of Phytopharaceutical Materials, Melanie Levesque
Theses
The increased popularity of alternative medicine treatments has prompted resurgence in the use of traditional herbal remedies. Among this vast number of herbs, ginseng is purchased by a considerable number of consumers; especially three species: Panax ginseng, Panax quinquefolium, and Eleutherococcus senticosus. Many of the physiological effects claimed by ginseng manufacturers tend to mimic those of central nervous system stimulants. This led to the purpose of this research, which was to develop an HPLC chromatographic method in order to determine if any specific CNS stimulants are within ginseng supplements. Specifically we found a series of CNS stimulants, methylxanthines (caffeine, theophylline, …
Molecular & Physical Characterization Of Threonine Dehydrogenase From Serratia Marcescens, Michael Wetherell
Molecular & Physical Characterization Of Threonine Dehydrogenase From Serratia Marcescens, Michael Wetherell
Theses
Threonine dehydrogenase has been purified from Serretia marcescens 450 fold to obtain 1300 micrograms of enzyme from 15 grams of cells. The amino-terminus has been sequenced and places it in a class with medium chain alcohol dehydrogenases from both Z.mobilus and E.coli. The native enzyme is a dimer of 35.6 kD sub-units containing approximately 324 amino acids. The gene structure of the enzyme is dissimilar from that of the E.coli TDH and may represent a mutation of an alcohol dehydrogenase with possible preference to propanol.
A Homage To Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 "Emperor", Young-Ji Shin
A Homage To Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 "Emperor", Young-Ji Shin
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to explore my personal experience with the reciprocal relationships of the various fields of art. The media of art includes the fine arts, crafts, visual arts, theater, film, music, dance and literature - all genres commonly considered "the arts." These different fields are not isolated in and of themselves but rather have mutual connections amongst them. This thesis elucidates my concept of art as one. A vague fondness for the arts drew me to the Seoul Arts High School in 1987. I had a broad interest in art in general, and did not limit …

1998.2 - Aquarium Bilbao, Martin Price, Chy-Tseh Che, Dani Alsina-Tora
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1998 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Aquarium. Chy-tseh Che, scheme one, and Dani Alsina-Tora, scheme two. An eddy or circular movement of water becomes the metaphor for an aquarium set in the river in Bilbao, Spain in scheme one. Spatial sequences flow from entry on land, through tunnels in the water, to ramps inside the aquarium. Scheme two is a landshape form in order not to be dwarfed by the adjacent Guggenheim. The ground is lifted up into the sky and the sky is brought down into …

Towards A "Critical Regionalism" For Rapidly Developing Areas Of Texas., David Dumez Hopman, Richard C. Rome, Gary O. Robinette, Richard V. Francaviglia
Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications
The published intellectual discourse on "Critical Regionalism" is more prolific in the literature of architecture and planning than that of landscape architecture. As a result, the existing parameters used to define regional elements are not always useful to landscape architects, particularly in rapidly developing areas in which there are few, easily recognizable, regional components to the landscape. This thesis uses the ideas embodied in Critical Regionalism as a means to reveal how selected landscape architects and landscape designers interpret the landscapes and architecture of Texas through their individual landscape design philosophies and methodologies. Specific methodologies for extracting regional elements from …

The Impact Of E-Mail Use On Fourth Graders' Writing Skills, Carole Greb Nix
The Impact Of E-Mail Use On Fourth Graders' Writing Skills, Carole Greb Nix
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations
The growing interest in computer use at home and in the workplace has led to the incorporation of computer skills into school curricula. Numerous claims assert the benefit of computers, but questions remain concerning the nature of that benefit. The increasingly widespread use of telecommunications raises further questions regarding the effect of computer-mediated communication on language development. Unfortunately, few rigorous studies have been conducted to provide evidence of the actual effect of e-mail on children's writing skills. The data for this study are handwritten compositions, e-mail messages, and surveys/interviews collected from two schools, matched for demographic and academic variables. The …

Characterization Of Kapton Polymer Containing An Inorganic Additive, Juan Betancourt
Characterization Of Kapton Polymer Containing An Inorganic Additive, Juan Betancourt
Theses
With a full space program in progress, new types of materials are needed for spacecraft construction. These materials need to be strong, have good thermal stability and be good insulators. One of the materials with these properties is Kapton, manufactured by Dupont. Being a polyimide, it provides these characteristics, and being quite stable to ultraviolet light makes it the best of its kind for space use. The only concern is that, at the altitudes where earth observing spacecrafts orbit the earth, high concentrations of monoatomic oxygen (AO) react with the organic material and produce CO and H20. In an attempt …

Symposium: Work And Family Introduction, Lorraine Schmall
Northern Illinois University Law Review
Work and family problems seem as numerous, and as difficult to deal with as our children. Invidious discrimination, inadequate laws, intra-family dissension all contribute to our woes. But the dialogue has begun, and problem-solving cannot be too far behind.

A Study Of Water Pick-Up Rates And Their Effects On Ink Rheology, Ink Strength, Ink Dryback And Ink Rub-Off, Richard Wright
Theses
It has been thought that the water pick-up rate and capacity of an ink may have a profound affect on the press performance of an ink. As the water content of ink changes so do the Theological characteristics of the ink and this effects ink performance attributes such as ink transfer, drying , rub resistance, set-off and strength. An emulsification curve can shed some light on how ink might perform on a press but this alone is not enough. The objective of this thesis research was to study the interaction of fountain solution and ink as used in the printing …

The Study Of Circumannular Orbital Interactions In The Imine Derivatives Of 2,2,4,4-Tetramethyl-1,3-Cyclobutanedione, Arati Naik
Theses
The title compounds possess unusual orbital interactions. A p-pi type interaction which incorporates both a transannular and circumannular component and a non-bonding circumannular interaction from the lone electron pairs on the opposite ends of the ring interacting via the ring carbon p-orbitals of proper symmetry. Variable temperature NMR was employed to examine the effect of the non-bonding interaction of inversion through nitrogen on the imine chromophore. A plot of In k vs 1/T allowed for the determination of Ea from the slope and the free energy of activation AG was calculated from the coalescence temperature. The magnitude of long range …

Fathers And Parental Leave Revisited, Martin H. Malin
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This article continues the author's work on parental leave and fathers' involvement with their children in light of several years under the Family and Medical Leave Act. It discusses why paternal involvement is important to children, fathers and mothers. It also explores the link between fathers' taking parental leave and their later involvement in the lives of their children. It focuses on two barriers to paternal use of parental leave: economics and workplace hostility. It examines developments under collective bargaining agreements, unemployment compensation laws and the FMLA. It finds that evolving arbitral interpretations of collective bargaining agreements and judicial interpretations …
