Growing A Greater Understanding Of Multiplication Through Lesson Study: Mathematics Teacher Educators’ Professional Development, Mollie H. Appelgate, Lara Dick, Melissa Soto, Dittika Gupta

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Research cites the need for developing teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) as well as for developing mathematics teacher educators’ (MTEs) mathematical knowledge for teaching teachers (MKTT). Using the framework of lesson study: formulating goals and researching, planning, implementing and observing, and reflecting (Lewis & Hurd, 2011), a group of MTEs designed and analyzed a lesson on multiplication for prospective elementary teachers. A qualitative analysis of MTE journal reflections and prospective teacher work showed a greater understanding of MTEs’ MKTT related to multiplication after completion of the lesson study. The authors recommend MTEs conduct lesson studies for other mathematics topics to ...

How To Reconcile The Seemingly Contradictory Relationship Between Ancient Chinese Values And Modern Social Convention: A Further Look At The Compatibility Of Confucianism, Xiang Li Apr 2020

How To Reconcile The Seemingly Contradictory Relationship Between Ancient Chinese Values And Modern Social Convention: A Further Look At The Compatibility Of Confucianism, Xiang Li

2020 JHU Richard Macksey National Undergraduate Humanities Research Symposium

Many scholars tend to have the belief that most Western philosophy theories are incompatible with those of Eastern, specifically Confucianism, as they emphasize on completely opposite values. For example, western philosophers, such as Plato and Aristotle, highly value justice and rationality, while the Confucian School seems to appreciate those virtues that seem irrational and incompatible with modern social values, such as li (ritual propriety), Xiao (filiality). For example, Margery Wolf, an American anthropologist, claims that Confucianism is a useless ideology of Old China, which is nearly synonymous with patriarchy and misogyny. However, in my research, I'd like to talk ...

The Relationship Between Residential Learning Communities And Student Engagement, Sarah S. Hurtado, Robert M. Gonyea, Polly A. Graham, Kevin Fosnacht

Learning Communities Research and Practice

Residential learning communities (RLCs) are residence hall environments designed to deliver academic and social benefits. For decades, many have argued RLCs are an effective means for increasing student success. Yet substantial changes in the defining characteristics of campus housing and student diversity have led to new questions about the impact of living on campus and the benefits of RLCs in particular. Consequently, we investigated the continued efficacy of RLCs as an effective educational practice. Using data from a diverse, multi-institution sample of first-year and sophomore students, this study provides insight into the relationships between RLC participation, student engagement, and perceived ...

The Developmental Effects On The Daughter Of An Absent Father Throughout Her Lifespan, Carlee Castetter Apr 2020

The Developmental Effects On The Daughter Of An Absent Father Throughout Her Lifespan, Carlee Castetter

Honors Senior Capstone Projects

Fatherless households are becoming increasingly common throughout the United States. As a result, more and more children are growing up without the support of both parents, and this may be causing developmental consequences. While there has been significant research conducted on the effect of absent fathers on children in general, there has been far less research regarding girls specifically. As discovered in this paper, girls are often impacted differently than boys when it comes to growing up without a father. The current research paper aims to discover just exactly how girls are impacted by this lack of a parent throughout ...

Native Species Response To Goat Foraging In A Shrub-Invaded California Coastal Grassland, John Inman Apr 2020

Native Species Response To Goat Foraging In A Shrub-Invaded California Coastal Grassland, John Inman

AES Theses

California coastal grasslands have been frequent targets of preservation efforts due to the habitat they provide for native perennial bunchgrasses, such as purple needlegrass (Stipa pulchra), which have been nearly completely replaced by non-native annual grasses in much of the state. Once protected from ecological disturbance, however, these grasslands become subject to invasion by coyote brush (Baccharis pilularis), potentially resulting in permanent loss of habitat. Goats have successfully been used to control woody vegetation in other contexts but to date there have been no studies published on using goats to restore ecological disturbance in coyote brush-invaded coastal grasslands. Land managers ...

The Effectiveness Of Library Instruction For Graduate/Professional Students: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Adelia B. Grabowsky, Liza J. Weisbrod

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Library instruction to improve information literacy (IL) is often considered essential only for undergraduates. However, students in graduate/professional programs do not always have the requisite skills needed for graduate level study and research, which suggests they may also benefit from library instruction targeted specifically to graduate students. This study used a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of library instruction for increasing IL skills and/or knowledge among graduate and professional students. The authors searched seven databases to identify studies published in English between 2000 and 2019 that reported on library instruction for graduate or professional students ...

Studies On Guest/Host Complexes, Liposomal And Other Systems For Potential Chemotherapeutic Drug(S) Delivery, Sherif Ashraf Fahmy

Theses and Dissertations

Following the discovery of cisplatin over 50 years ago, this platinum-based drug (PBD) has been a widely used and effective form of cancer therapy, primarily causing cell death by inducing DNA damage and triggering apoptosis. However, the dose limiting toxicity of cisplatin has led to the development of the newer generations' platinum-based drugs (second and third) that maintain the cytotoxicity of cisplatin but have more acceptable side-effect profiles. In addition to the creation of new analogs, tumor delivery systems such as liposome-encapsulated platinum drugs have been designed and are currently in clinical trials. In this study, we have created and ...

Seeing The Global Physical Context Of Wholeness, Hamid Rafizadeh

Learning and Teaching Forum

Kennedy Union 311

The pursuit of the whole person through models like 3H (head, heart, hands) my miss a critical physical aspect within which the wholeness develops and exists. One such aspect originates at the earth’s two versions. Humankind has a good understanding of one version and little if any of the second. Such lack of knowledge would adversely affect the development and maintenance of human wholeness. This proposal considers a workshop at the 2020 Learning and Teaching Forum to address this knowledge deficiency in University of Dayton’s community through participative knowledge processing and systems thinking.

Traumatized Characters In Traumatized Environments: A Look At Repression And Horror, Rebecca L. Goldman Jan 2020

Traumatized Characters In Traumatized Environments: A Look At Repression And Horror, Rebecca L. Goldman

Scripps Senior Theses

Using Sigmund Freud’s theory of ‘return of the repressed’ as a theoretical basis, this paper takes a case study approach using three critically acclaimed horror films. These films include Nicholas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now (1974), Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980), and Ari Aster’s Midsommar (2019). With use of each film, the interaction between the repressed trauma of the protagonists’ and the film environment is explored, utilizing the notion that repressed trauma will always manifest itself as a symptom of the unconscious mind. Supporting theories include Slavoj Zizek’s notion that dreams must be read in ...

A Magnetic-Linked Multilevel Active Neutral Point Clamped Converter With An Advanced Switching Technique For Grid Integration Of Solar Photovoltaic Systems, A M. Mahfuz-Ur-Rahman, Md Rabiul Islam, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Danny Sutanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

© 1972-2012 IEEE. Nowadays, the grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) system has been drawing significant attention due to the rapid development and the decreasing cost of solar panels. The efficiency and reliability of a grid-connected PV system mainly depend on the power conversion system and the control strategy. This article presents a new magnetic-linked 7-level active neutral point clamped (ANPC) converter, which requires less number of flying capacitors and also reduces the control complexity of the grid-connected PV system. The proposed converter topology utilizes the input dc bus voltage better than the traditional ANPC multilevel converter and also provides galvanic isolation to ...
