Constructing Essential Laminations In 2-Bridge Knot Surgered 3-Manifolds, Ramin Naimi Dec 1996

Constructing Essential Laminations In 2-Bridge Knot Surgered 3-Manifolds, Ramin Naimi

Ramin Naimi

A nontrivial knot that can be drawn with only two relative maxima in the vertical direction is called a 2-bridge knot, and one that can be drawn on a torus is called a torus knot. Loosely speaking, a lamination in a manifold M is a foliation of M, except that it can have a nonempty open complement in M, and very loosely speaking, the lamination is essential if each leaf of it L is incompressible, i.e. inclusion of L into M induces an injective homomorphism from π1(L) into π1(M). Our main result is: Theorem 2. Every 3-manifold obtained by surgery …

Haitian Education Under Siege: Democratization, National Development, And Social Reconstruction, Marc Prou Dec 1996

Haitian Education Under Siege: Democratization, National Development, And Social Reconstruction, Marc Prou

Marc E. Prou

From a national development perspective, the Haitian educational system presents an alarming picture. It is one in which too much is expected of too little, and in which results are sacrificed to bureacratic convenience. The facts are simple and irrefutable. Only a massive investment in human capital formation will bring economic and social progress in Haiti. Yet economic growth and industrial expansion rely on education as a key factor for human capital formation. The major dichotomy between the two is that education can influence national development only to the extent that individuals are able to put the interests of the nation …

The Goffman Reader, Erving Goffman Dec 1996

The Goffman Reader, Erving Goffman

Charles C Lemert

The Goffman Reader aims to bring the most complete collection of Erving Goffman's (1922-1982) writing and thinking as a sociologist. Among the most inventive, unique and individualistic of thinkers in American sociology, his works first appeared in the early 1950's at a time when a more formal, traditional sociology dominated the scene. In this collection, Goffman's work is arranged into four categories: the production of self, the confined self, the nature of social life, and the framing of experience. Through this arrangement, readers will not only be presented with Goffman's thinking in chronological order, but also with a framework of …

Is There Environmental Racism? The Demographics Of Hazardous Waste In Los Angeles County, J. Boer, Manuel Pastor, James Sadd, Lori Snyder Dec 1996

Is There Environmental Racism? The Demographics Of Hazardous Waste In Los Angeles County, J. Boer, Manuel Pastor, James Sadd, Lori Snyder

James Sadd

The article assesses the location of treatment, storage and disposal facilities (TSDF) in Los Angeles County, California, with focus on racism. The study shows that a simple comparison of tracts with and without TSDF reveals statistically significant differences by race and economic status along the lines suggested by the environmental justice proponents. There are also significant differences by industrial land use and manufacturing employment along the lines suggested by critics of the environmental justice concept. In this multivariate model race, along with industrial land use and employment in manufacturing, remains a factor, rising income that has a positive then a …

Revision Of The Southeast Asian Leaf Turtle Genus Cyclemys Bell, 1834, With Description Of A New Species, Edgar Lehr, Uwe Fritz, Maren Gaulke Dec 1996

Revision Of The Southeast Asian Leaf Turtle Genus Cyclemys Bell, 1834, With Description Of A New Species, Edgar Lehr, Uwe Fritz, Maren Gaulke

Edgar Lehr

Within the genus Cyclemys, four species are recognised and diagnosed, based upon more than 200 specimens. One is described as a new species. For the other three species, the nomenclatural history is discussed and several lecto- or neotypes are designated. In addition, a key for all species is presented. Cyclemys dentata (GRAY, 1831) sensu stricto is characterised by a reddish, intensely striped head and neck pattern and a predominant or entirely yellow plastron with a short interfemora1 and a long interanal seam. It is distributed from Thailand over the Malay peninsula to Sumatra and Java. Its range includes Borneo and …

Virtual Trade Dress: A Very Real Problem, Tom Bell Dec 1996

Virtual Trade Dress: A Very Real Problem, Tom Bell

Tom W. Bell

A tragedy looms for trade dress. Encouraged by bad case law and tempted by new technologies, trade dress threatens to assume a role properly reserved for other forms of intellectual property. Trade dress should aim primarily at protecting the public from confusing the features that identify goods and services. Current trends, however, risk expanding trade dress until it constitutes the very commodities that it once merely identified. Superficially genuine but fundamentally artificial, this is virtual trade dress.

Ngf And Neurotrophin-3 Both Activate Trka On Sympathetic Neurons But Differentially Regulate Survival And Neuritogenesis, Daniel Belliveau, I. Krivko, C. Lachance, J. Kohn, D. Rusakov, D. Kaplan, F. Miller Dec 1996

Ngf And Neurotrophin-3 Both Activate Trka On Sympathetic Neurons But Differentially Regulate Survival And Neuritogenesis, Daniel Belliveau, I. Krivko, C. Lachance, J. Kohn, D. Rusakov, D. Kaplan, F. Miller

Daniel J. Belliveau

In this report we examine the biological and molecular basis of the control of sympathetic neuron differentiation and survival by NGF and neurotrophin-3 (NT-3). NT-3 is as efficient as NGF in mediating neuritogenesis and expression of growth-associated genes in NGF-dependent sympathetic neurons, but it is 20-40-fold less efficient in supporting their survival. Both NT-3 and NGF induce similar sustained, long-term activation of TrkA, while NGF is 10-fold more efficient than NT-3 in mediating acute, short-term TrkA activity. At similar acute levels of TrkA activation, NT-3 still mediates neuronal survival two- to threefold less well than NGF. However, a mutant NT-3 …
