Multiplication Of Four Penstemon Species In Vitro, Dale T. Lindgren, Brent Mccown
Multiplication Of Four Penstemon Species In Vitro, Dale T. Lindgren, Brent Mccown
West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte
Penstemon (beard tongue) is a native genus of U.S. wildflower that is used for landscape plants (Lindgren, 1984a, 1984b, 1990), for cut flowers (Lindgren, 1986), and for ecological studies (Stubbendieck et al., 1982). Tissue culture techniques could be useful for propagating cultivars and species in this genus as some do not breed true from seed, require special seed germination conditions, or are difficult to propagate using other vegetative methods (Lindgren, 1984b, 1990; Stubbendieck et al., 1982). Penstemon haydenii is also the only listed endangered plant species in Nebraska.

Reproductive Characteristics Of Rodent Assemblages In Cultivated Regions Of Central Argentina, James N. Mills, Barbara A. Ellis, Kelly T. Mckee, Julio I. Maiztegui, James E. Childs
Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
Small mammals were trapped for 2 years at 16 localities on the central-Argentine pampa. Six species (Akodon azarae, Calomys musculinus, C. laucha, Bolomys obscurus, Oligory-zomys flavescens and Mus musculus) accounted for >95% of captures. The major breeding season, as assessed by pregnancies, was September or October through April or May. Mild weather in late autumn and winter of the second season resulted in a relatively longer breeding season during the 2nd year of the study. Females of all six species comprised significantly 50% of captures during the height of the breeding season. For most species, there was …
Relationship Of Channel Maintenance Flows To Whooping Crane Use Of The Platte River, Craig A. Faanes, David B. Bowman
Relationship Of Channel Maintenance Flows To Whooping Crane Use Of The Platte River, Craig A. Faanes, David B. Bowman
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
Periodic high flows in the Platte River are necessary to scour vegetation and redistribute sediment in the stream channel. Peak and mean annual flows have been reduced by as much as 70% from pre-development times, but channel maintenance flows still occur, although at a much reduced frequency and magnitude of occurrence. Use of the Platte River by migrant whooping cranes (Grus americana) in recent years appears to be related to the recent occurrence of flows in excess of 8,000 cfs for 5 or more consecutive days.
Host Quality Of Baldcypress And Its Influence On Fruittree Leafroller, Archips Argyrospila (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), Performance In Forested Wetlands Of Louisiana., James R. Meeker
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Ecological relationships between the fruittree leafroller (FTLR), (Archips argyrospila (Walker)) and a new host, baldcypress (Taxodium distichum (L.)), were investigated in southern Louisiana where persistent annual defoliation over increasingly larger areas has occurred since 1983. Defoliation was observed to correspond with common types of baldcypress foliage morphology; designated as open and appressed. Pondcypress, Shumard oak and citrus foliage also were examined. The objectives were to: (1) determine the relative suitability/susceptibility of foliage types, and (2) quantify parameters of foliage quality possibly influencing FTLR performance. Levels of defoliation, egg mass counts, and laboratory bioassays of: initial survival, host preference, growth, feeding, …
Ecosystem Models Of Aquatic Primary Production And Fish Migration In Laguna De Terminos, Mexico., Enrique Reyes
Ecosystem Models Of Aquatic Primary Production And Fish Migration In Laguna De Terminos, Mexico., Enrique Reyes
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Laguna de Terminos is Mexico's largest coastal lagoon. There is a high habitat diversity including open water, mangroves, seagrasses and marshes, which supports Mexico's most economically important fisheries. Understanding ecosystem processes is essential for effective management of the lagoon's resources. This research developed landscape-level models for aquatic primary production (LAPPTER model), and fish migration (ROE model) in Laguna de Terminos. The ROE model was developed first as a theoretical approach, and later integrated into the LAPPTER model as a submodule which utilizes simulated production as a food source. The ROE model includes behavioral rules for fish movement based on environmental …

Measuring Shrubland Vegetational Structure Using Avian Habitats As An Example, Douglas A. James
Measuring Shrubland Vegetational Structure Using Avian Habitats As An Example, Douglas A. James
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Vegetational sampling of avian habitats stresses the use of methods primarily designed for forest birds. This paper describes a technique for sampling vegetational structure in uneven patchy habitats such as shrublands. Using the method, avian habitats in old field shrublands of northwestern Arkansas were analyzed.
Student Perceptions Of The Transition From Year 10 To Year 11, Tim Mcdonald
Student Perceptions Of The Transition From Year 10 To Year 11, Tim Mcdonald
Theses : Honours
Issues associated with the transition from Year 10 to Year 11 have largely been ignored by researchers. Previous research has predominantly focussed on the primary to secondary transition experience. The existing problem of lower school to upper school transition has been compounded by the increased importance of upper school and the rising retention rates. This study investigated student perceptions of the transition from Year 10 to Year 11. It explored student concerns encountered in the transition and the differences they perceived between Year 10 and Year 11 after having entered Year 11. A case study approach, incorporating both qualitative and …

Status Of The Ozark Hellbender, Cryptobranchus Bishopi (Urodela: Cryptobranchidae), In The Spring River, Fulton County, Arkansas, Stanley E. Trauth, J. D. Wilhide, Patrick Daniel
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
We conducted a tag and release study of the Ozark hellbender along a 26 km stretch of the Spring River from mid-July through mid-November, 1991, to determine current population levels. Salamanders were collected by hand with the aid of scuba diving equipment. Thirteen visits(36 dive hrs.) to10 selected access sites yielded 20 animals. Compared to previously published data of the early 1980's which indicated large, striving populations of C. bishopi(in some cases, > 300 individuals) in the Spring River, our study found perilously low numbers of salamanders. This drastic decline may be attributed to over collection of specimens for scientific or …

Eleven New Species Of Free-Living Marine Nematodes, Edwin J. Keppner
Gulf and Caribbean Research
The genus Halalaimus is reviewed and divided into four groups based on characters of the male. Characters used to separate the groups of males include presence or absence of caudal algae and the presence or absence of a precloacal sensillum and/or pore. Ten new species are described from St. Andrew Bay, Bay County, Florida, and H. gerlachi n. sp. is proposed for H. gracilis sensu GerIach, 1967. New species from St. Andrew Bay are H. thalassinus, H. tarjani, H. bayensis, H. bulbocaudatus, H. variabilis, H. paracomatus, H. americanus, H. floridanus, H. brimi, …

Strike-Induced Chemosensory Searching: Variation Among Lizards, Royce E. Ballinger, Nathaniel R. Coady, Joseph M. Prokop, Julio A. Lemos-Espinal
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Strike-induced chemosensory searching (SICS) was found in two families of lizards (Teiidae, Anguidae) but not in two other lizard families (Scincidae, Iguanidae). Experiments on another family (Xenosauridae) were inconclusive as to its possession of SICS. The rate of tongue-flicking was significantly increased after a simulated prey strike compared to controls in Cnemidophorus sexlineatus and Barisia imbricata. SICS may be part of a complex foraging strategy evolved in certain reptiles rather than part of a generalized chemosensory behavior because two species of skinks did not exhibit SICS in spite of a well developed vomeronasal olfactory apparatus and known abilities to …

The First Documentation Of A Lower Middle Pennsylvanian Upland Flora From The Eastern Margin Of The Eastern Interior Basin (Illinois Basin), Vicki J. Comer
Masters Theses
The primary objective of this study is to reconstruct the paleofloristics of an unnamed shale of lower Middle Pennsylvanian age. The shale is periodically exposed in the highwall of the Ashboro Pit, Log Cabin Coal Company, Clay County, Indiana. This will be the first upland fossil flora to be described from the eastern margin of the Eastern Interior Basin (Illinois Basin). The gray shale containing the upland flora lies directly above the Upper Block Coal (SW 1/4, SE 1/4, sec. 17, T. 11N., R. 6W.)
Two collections, collected on three different occasions were made available for analysis: Smithsonian Natural …
