Measuring Entry Characteristics Of Writing Program Participants: Apprehension And Previous Exposure To Specific Writing Strategies., Gladys E. Haunton
Measuring Entry Characteristics Of Writing Program Participants: Apprehension And Previous Exposure To Specific Writing Strategies., Gladys E. Haunton
Student Work
This investigation is a descriptive study designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Daly-Miller Writing-Apprehension Scale (DMWAS) and the Student Exposure Survey (SES) in describing entry level characteristics of students entering Methodist College of Nursing and Allied Healt (NMC). Results from the study will be used to design a student outcomes-based evaluation component for a Writing Across the Curriculum program. The following assumptions were tested: 1. NMC students, who have chosen careers in health care, will report higher apprehension than University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) students, who are entering a variety of other occupations. 2. Exposure to specific writing …
The Houses That Charles Built: The House As Symbol In "David Copperfield", "Bleak House", And "Great Expectations", Toni Johnson-Woods
The Houses That Charles Built: The House As Symbol In "David Copperfield", "Bleak House", And "Great Expectations", Toni Johnson-Woods
Student Work
Because of his work’s enduring quality, Dickens has been subjected to critical scrutiny. Slater examines Dickens’ women; Herst explores Dickens’ heroes; Thurley considers the myth in Dickens; Collins traces crime and education in Dickens. Each study adds a richer understanding of either his characters, his symbolism, or his craft. The research seems extensive, and it would appear that little remains to be said; however, after reading Bleak House the title suggested to me another area for future interpretation. To date, few have examined the Dickinson house in detail. Frances Armstrong considers Dickens’ concept of home, and Alice Van Buren Kelley …

Metacognitive Prereading Activities To Enhance Reading Comprehension, Katherine Laws
All Graduate Projects
This study investigated metacognitive prereading strategies content area teachers might utilize for process emphasis reading comprehension. The literature review showed the shift in reading comprehension instruction from a word based emphasis to an interactive process emphasis, described content area reading instruction and metacognition. A selection of metacognitive prereading activities was included for use by teachers in content area classrooms. Implications of using the activities were discussed.

By And For Women: Involving Women In The Development Of Reproductive Health Care Materials, Valerie J. Hull, Barbara L. Ibrahim, Nadia Farah, Blanca Figueroa, Margaret Winn
By And For Women: Involving Women In The Development Of Reproductive Health Care Materials, Valerie J. Hull, Barbara L. Ibrahim, Nadia Farah, Blanca Figueroa, Margaret Winn
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The studies in this issue of Quality/Calidad/Qualité describe three efforts to involve women in the development of reproductive health care materials in different settings in the developing world. In Cairo, a women's health collective produced a comprehensive reference book for women; in Peru, a woman's group, with the extensive involvement of their nonliterate audience, developed a series of illustrated teaching materials; and in the South Pacific, an all-woman production crew produced three motivation and teaching videos developed in response to the expressed needs of Pacific Island women. Despite contrasts in the characteristics of the intended audiences, the development process, and …

Family Planning And Child Survival Programs As Assessed In 1991, John A. Ross, W. Parker Mauldin, Steven R. Green, E. Romana Cooke
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This volume continues a tradition initiated at the Population Council nearly 25 years ago when the first edition of “Population and Family Planning Programs” was issued. That factbook began a series of 12 editions produced through 1993. The data in that series were consolidated and updated in another publication, and the present volume is now issued, based partly upon a 1989 questionnaire inquiry to over 100 developing countries. A range of maternal and child survival data were added to the family planning information. The relationships among fertility behavior, infant and child mortality, and maternal health are closely interwoven; moreover, many …

John Donne's Verse Letters To Lucy Russell, Countess Of Bedford: Rhetorical Means To A Friendship., Joan Frances Faust
John Donne's Verse Letters To Lucy Russell, Countess Of Bedford: Rhetorical Means To A Friendship., Joan Frances Faust
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
John Donne's verse letters to Lucy Russell, Countess of Bedford, are more than static hyperbolic praise to a patroness interchangeable with any other patroness. Rather, they are viable and personal means by which Donne creates and sustains a friendship. Through the five verse letters examined in this dissertation, "Reason is the soules left hand," "You have refin'd mee," "T'Have written then," "To the Countesse of Bedford At New-yeares Tide," and "Honour is so sublime perfection," Donne rhetorically demonstrates his understanding of and ability to function within the various contexts of Bedford's life. Using the accepted view of the epistolary form …

The Copper T 380 Intrauterine Device: A Summary Of Scientific Data, Irving Sivin, Forrest Greenslade, Frederick H. Schmidt, Sandra N. Waldman
Clinical Research
Intrauterine devices are the most widely used of all reversible contraceptive methods worldwide. Modern IUDs are among the most effective and long-acting methods of family planning and are acceptable options for many women. This monograph presents highlights of the clinical performance of the Copper T 380 over eight years, including the latest data on effectiveness, expulsions, and continuation rates. It incorporates data from Population Council and World Health Organization studies, and work by scientists at Family Health International and in several countries. Clinical studies of the three models of the Copper T 380 have provided substantial evidence of the safety, …
Breaking New Ground: Reaching Out To Women Farmers In Western Zambia, Janice Jiggins, Paul Maimbo, Mary Masona
Breaking New Ground: Reaching Out To Women Farmers In Western Zambia, Janice Jiggins, Paul Maimbo, Mary Masona
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Over the last few decades, small-scale projects have been developed throughout Africa to help incorporate women farmers into the mainstream of agricultural extension services. This edition of SEEDS presents an interesting example from Zambia's Western Province—the Women's Extension Program, located within the Home Economics Section of the Department of Agriculture. This program is working to change a government agricultural bureaucracy from within by redefining mandates, encouraging attitude change through staff training, broadening village-level opportunities and perceptions, and widening technical and economic research agendas. The program’s experience emphasizes the importance of using a variety of approaches in order to effectively reach …
Directory Of Surveys In Developing Countries: Data On Families And Households, 1975–92, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Catherine M. Marquette
Directory Of Surveys In Developing Countries: Data On Families And Households, 1975–92, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Catherine M. Marquette
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This directory of surveys contains data on families and households in developing countries. The emphasis is on intergenerational linkages as well as conjugal ties and co-residential arrangements. Surveys that do not situate individuals within a family or household context are excluded. Thus, many labor force surveys with data on the employment status and earnings of men and women are not included unless they also collected data on respondents’ children and/or households. The same is true of contraceptive prevalence surveys that limit their attention to women’s reproductive behavior. The majority of surveys included in the directory are either household-based or woman-based. …
Book Chapter: The Return Of The Repressed: Saussure And Swift On Language And History, Tony Crowley
Book Chapter: The Return Of The Repressed: Saussure And Swift On Language And History, Tony Crowley
Scripps Faculty Publications and Research
Departures in linguistics are nothing new of course. Ideas come and go, "facts" appear and disappear along with the theories which first brought them to light, trends shift and alter. The language used to describe the history of the field, a field which once constituted a new departure in its own right, is replete with the language of innovation: "breakthrough," "advance," "progress," and even "revolution" are familiar enough epithets. In the face of all this novelty then the question must be, how to do something new? The answer which is proposed here might appear somewhat odd for the intention is …
Norplant® Use-Dynamics Diagnostic Study, 1991, Heru Kasidi, Peter C. Miller
Norplant® Use-Dynamics Diagnostic Study, 1991, Heru Kasidi, Peter C. Miller
Reproductive Health
After five years of national programmatic use of Norplant® contraceptive implants, in 1992 the National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN) plans to implement a follow-up Use-Dynamics Study of implant users in West Java and West Sumatra Provinces, Indonesia. A Diagnostic Study was implemented in 1991 to prepare for that study prior to final approval, and to get some early insights into implant program operations in advance of final results from the main study. This report is a summary of findings from the Diagnostic Study. The Diagnostic Study had two broad objectives: to obtain information to guide development of the …
Closure In Fiction And Film: Strategies Of Ending In Howard Hawks's "His Girl Friday", Henry James's "The Ambassadors", Orson Welles's "Citizen Kane", And James Joyce's "A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man", Paul W. Salmon
Digitized Theses
This thesis explores closure in two novels, Henry James's The Ambassadors and James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and two films, His Girl Friday directed by Howard Hawks and Citizen Kane directed by Orson Welles. The specific study of closure in films is necessitated by the almost total absence of research in this area. Although study of closure in prose narratives is historically more extensive, the study of closure in the two novels under discussion has previously been undertaken within narrow parameters. Rather than invoking a rigid model of the closural process, this thesis draws …
The Presence Of Jean-Jacques Rousseau In The Work Of Percy Bysshe Shelley, Monika H. Lee
The Presence Of Jean-Jacques Rousseau In The Work Of Percy Bysshe Shelley, Monika H. Lee
Digitized Theses
This dissertation, "The Presence of Jean-Jacques Rousseau In the Work of Percy Bysshe Shelley," is an inquiry into the important but previously unexamined literary relationship of Shelley and Rousseau, as it presents itself historically, intertextually and in relation to language theory. The initial chapter argues for Shelley's awareness of the legendary Rousseau through his works and also through Rousseau's influence on William Godwin, Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley. A literary historical context is established as a background against which a much more complicated series of representations of Rousseau in Shelley's poetry is set. The simplistic configurations in Shelley's England of …
Mother Outline: A Critique Of Gender In Blake's Aesthetics And "The Four Zoas", Peter Georgelos
Mother Outline: A Critique Of Gender In Blake's Aesthetics And "The Four Zoas", Peter Georgelos
Digitized Theses
Recent feminist critics of William Blake have drawn attention to the marginalization of a split metaphor of the female in his work as either passively good or actively evil. Not only does this metaphor constitute a stereotypically negative view of femininity, but Blake goes on to resolve its conflictedness by absorbing the female into a male collective of psychic faculties or Zoas known as the Human Form Divine. The work of Julia Kristeva, when placed within a specifically feminist revision of psychoanalysis, can help us to understand the implicit misogyny of Blake's gender-coded myth as symptomatic of broader cultural tensions. …
Representing "Shakespearean" Discourse: "Hamlet", "Cymbeline", "Timon Of Athens" And "Lucrece", Dale G. Churchward
Representing "Shakespearean" Discourse: "Hamlet", "Cymbeline", "Timon Of Athens" And "Lucrece", Dale G. Churchward
Digitized Theses
In my dissertation, I am concerned with the manner in which verbal and visual categories might be articulated in specific Shakespearean texts: Hamlet, Cymbeline, Timon of Athens and Lucrece. The textual narrative undertakes a new set of relations, and potentially undergoes a phenomenological transformation in stage space. For in the texts of the plays there are numerous references to signifying images which remain open and indeterminate. The nature of such openness becomes problematic in a verbal/visual venue. The manner in which textual editors intervene in order to "clarify" such openness functions to stabilize the unstable.;The Lucrece documents might be understood …

Mapping Abilities And Skill Levels Using Rasch Techniques, Annie Brown, Catherine Elder, Tom Lumley, Tim Mcnamara, Joy Mcqueen
Dr Tom Lumley
The ongoing interest in investigating the use of Item Response Theory (IRT) methods, involving the Rasch model, in language testing research and the development of language tests has encouraged the authors to explore the nature of this approach and to introduce some research on its validation.
