Deuteriohalogenation Of Norbornene Via Organoborane, Bo Han Dec 1991

Deuteriohalogenation Of Norbornene Via Organoborane, Bo Han

Theses

A stereospecific path way for the net addition of deuterium halide to a double bond was investigated using norbornene as the substrate. The polycyclic internal olefin, norbornene, has been chosen as the substrate due to its stereochemical aspects and its ability to reveal mechanistic information. The combination of hydroboration followed by halogenation in the presence of boron trihalide provides a method for the net a/trf-Markovnikov hydrohalogenation of alkenes. The Lewis acid-catalyzed halogenation of organoboranes proceeds with mostly retention of configuration at the reaction center as shown by the formation of largely exo-2- halonorboranes from fri-ejco-norbornylborane. Deuteriohalogenation of norbornene provides NMR …

Arbitrage, Clientele Effects, And The Term Structure Of Interest Rates, Eliakim Katz, Eliezer Z. Prisman Dec 1991

Arbitrage, Clientele Effects, And The Term Structure Of Interest Rates, Eliakim Katz, Eliezer Z. Prisman

Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications

This paper derives a new and intuitive estimation procedure for the term structure under potential tax arbitrage. No a priori assumptions regarding the equality of the prices and present values of bonds are made. The data are employed to determine whether this equality holds, and an appropriate estimator is thereby endogenously derived. The suggested estimator is based on the optimizing behavior of an investor in a market with frictions, and emerges directly from the solution of the dual of the no-arbitrage optimization problem. In addition, the proposed estimator benefits from being both theoretically sound and straightforward to apply.

Comparison Of Ellipso-Polarimetry And Dark-Field Methods For Determination Of Thickness Variations In Thin Films, Craig S. Eubanks Dec 1991

Comparison Of Ellipso-Polarimetry And Dark-Field Methods For Determination Of Thickness Variations In Thin Films, Craig S. Eubanks

Theses

A comparison of methods has been conducted of the optical techniques of ellipso-polarimetry, and dark field microscopy to determine the resolution of the spatial variations in thickness within thin films in real time. The ellipso-polarimeter is an adaptation of normal point ellipsometric methods to accommodate assessment of spatial distribution, but unlike the traditional methods, will utilize the image as qualitative information rather than quantitative. This is achieved through the use of a coherent light source, beam expander, and collimating/focusing optics for the throughput of the system, and the use of a CCD camera to collect the two-dimensional signal for display …

1991.2 - La Jolla Offices And Hotel, Martin Price, Melissa Bernard Dec 1991

1991.2 - La Jolla Offices And Hotel, Martin Price, Melissa Bernard

School of Architecture Student Projects

Design work from the 1991 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. La Jolla Office and Hotel. Melissa Bernard. The scheme snakes around a hill and, being situated in a valley, its profile creates a new hill. It becomes part of the existing rhythm of rolling hills and valleys of La Jolla, with views focused into the hills. As the angular form twists through the land, it separates to enclose a linear courtyard. Offices flanking both sides of an interior path have views facing outward or into the courtyard. Hotel rooms are positioned …

Contextual Trappings: A Strategy Of Contradiction, Richard Metzgar Nov 1991

Contextual Trappings: A Strategy Of Contradiction, Richard Metzgar

Theses

The focus of this thesis is to examine a multiplicity of ideas in which the presence of contradiction is the unifying component. This "process" of examination has been decidedly "expansive." I am emphasizing process and expansive because these terms could best describe the underlying philosophical attitude driving this body of work; process in relation to both conceptual as well as material considerations. Conceptually, I have given myself the opportunity to examine a broad range of issues, understanding the realization that all levels of worldly stimuli become raw material for an artistic statement. Similarly, in regards to material approaches, selecting the …

The Effects Of Deinking On The Coating Compounds Used On Carbonless Business Forms, Brooke Merrill Tinney Nov 1991

The Effects Of Deinking On The Coating Compounds Used On Carbonless Business Forms, Brooke Merrill Tinney

Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine what effects different deinking processes have on the coating compounds used on carbonless forms. Three deinking processes were studied: repulping without deinking chemicals or bleach, deinking using deinking chemicals only, and deinking using both deinking chemicals and bleach. None of the processes were successful at completely removing the oil, which is located in the microcapsules, or the resin, which is used to coat the coated-front portion (CF) of the carbonless form. Of the three deinking processes studied, simple repulping was most effective at eliminating the resin used in the coatings, while the …

The Economic Efficiency Of The Robust Rules Of Modern Product Liability Law, Ronald Sisselman, David R. Wade Nov 1991

The Economic Efficiency Of The Robust Rules Of Modern Product Liability Law, Ronald Sisselman, David R. Wade

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Since the 1960's, courts have embraced rules imposing "strict liability" on manufacturers for defective products while eschewing traditional negligence rules. This shift has generated considerable scholarship. Much of this scholarship has utilized economic models to analyze legal rules in terms of their economic efficiency. This article, by partitioning the "accident event space," derives and focuses on an alternative set of economically efficient "robust rules" to the inappropriate and narrow "simple rules" derived by previous scholars. Through an examination of existing case law, this article demonstrates that these economically efficient "robust rules" more accurately explain courts' notion of strict liability and …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Maleimide-Based Polymers, Hua-Chin Chen Nov 1991

Synthesis And Characterization Of Maleimide-Based Polymers, Hua-Chin Chen

Theses

This study concerns the synthesis and characterization of maleimide-based monomers and polymers. N-phenylmaleimide, 4'-N-maleimido-2,3'- dimethylazobenzene and N-p-chlorophenylmaleimide monomers were formed by imidizing maleic anhydride with aniline, 4'-amino-2,3'-dimethylazobenzene and p-chloroaniline, respectively. But N-nitrophenylmaleimide monomer was produced from the nitration of N-phenylmaleimide monomer. The two homopolymers, poly-(N-p-chlorophenylmaleimide) and poly-(Nnitrophenylmaleimide), were synthesized by solution polymerization in toluene solvent. Poly-(Styrene-co-N-phenylmaleimide) and poly-(Styrene-co-4'-Nmaleimido- 2,3'-dimethylazobenzene), each with compositions of [50:50] and [92:8], were produced by imidizing maleic anhydride constructing commercial poly-(Styrene-co-maleic anhydride); [50:50] and [92:8]. Styrene and Nphenylmaleimide monomers were copolymerized in both solution and emulsion to form poly-(Styrene-co-N-phenylmaleimide). Likewise, styrene and 4'-Nmaleimido- 2,3'-dimethylazobenzene were copolymerized …

Development Of A Modular 2-Micron Bicmos Process From An Existing 2-Micron N-Well Cmos Process, R. Michael Guidash Nov 1991

Development Of A Modular 2-Micron Bicmos Process From An Existing 2-Micron N-Well Cmos Process, R. Michael Guidash

Theses

A modular 2-micron BiCMOS process was developed from an existing 2-micron N-Well CMOS process. The process maintains compatibility with the existing 2- micron CMOS design rules and design library, meets the NPN device parameter targets supplied, and utilizes present manufacturing operations and equipment, with a minimum number of additional masks and steps. NPN transistor parameter targets were determined from intended technology applications. Process integration options are introduced and evaluated. A procedure for process latitude determination and process optimization is presented.

Judicial Enforcement Of The Right To An Equal Education In Illinois, Michael P. Seng, Michael Booden Nov 1991

Judicial Enforcement Of The Right To An Equal Education In Illinois, Michael P. Seng, Michael Booden

Northern Illinois University Law Review

In Brown v. Board of Educ., the United States Supreme Court recognized that "education is perhaps the most important function of state and local governments." However, despite this declaration of policy, the Court has not played an affirmative role in assuring that all children have equal education opportunity, regardless of economic or social status. The rest of the federal government has been equally uninterested in enforcing the policy so clearly enunciated in Brown. Unfortunately, Illinois government has done no more than its federal counterpart to ensure that its citizens have equal educational opportunities. This article analyzes federal and Illinois case …

The Probative Weight Of The "Mainstreaming" Requirement Under The Eha, Linda S. Abrahamson Nov 1991

The Probative Weight Of The "Mainstreaming" Requirement Under The Eha, Linda S. Abrahamson

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This comment examines the case law which has developed around the "mainstreaming" provision of the EHA. It focuses on the fact that placement decisions made by school districts are nearly always upheld, regardless of the desires of parents or handicapped students. The author contends that this inequity does not properly respect the role of parents under the EHA, as advocates for their handicapped children. The author concludes by developing a factor test to determine the appropriate placement for a handicapped student when the degree of mainstreaming is the only issue before a reviewing court.

Doe V. University Of Michigan, District Court Strikes Down University Policy Against Racial Harassment On Grounds Of Vagueness And Overbreadth, Timothy B. Zollinger Nov 1991

Doe V. University Of Michigan, District Court Strikes Down University Policy Against Racial Harassment On Grounds Of Vagueness And Overbreadth, Timothy B. Zollinger

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This note examines the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan decision invalidating the University of Michigan's racial harassment policy. The issue facing the court was one of first impression and was whether a university may adopt a racial harassment policy designed to protect harassment and intimidation on the basis of race, without infringing upon an individuals' first amendment rights to free speech and expression. This Note examines the court's decision invalidating the policy and ultimately concludes that such decision was mandated by the University's enforcement of the policy.
