Implementing Ray Tracing Algorithm In Parallel Environment, Tjah Jadi Dec 1988

Implementing Ray Tracing Algorithm In Parallel Environment, Tjah Jadi

Dissertations and Theses

Ray tracing is a very popular rendering algorithm in the field of computer graphics because it can generate highly-realistic images from three-dimensional models. Unfortunately, the computational cost is very expensive. To speed up the rendering process we present both static and dynamic scheduling (balancing) strategies for a multiprocessor system. Hence, the load balancing among the processors is the most important problem in parallel processing. The implementation of the algorithm is based on a modified octree structure.

A Dynamic Model Of Fill-And-Draw Reactor Utilizing An Inhibitory Substrate, Yun-Fei Ko Dec 1988

A Dynamic Model Of Fill-And-Draw Reactor Utilizing An Inhibitory Substrate, Yun-Fei Ko

Theses

A dynamic model of a fill-and-draw reactor has been developed, which includes a number of operational parameters, the fraction of total cycle time devoted to fill, reaction and draw, and the concentration of the toxic substance in the feed to the reactor.

Operating diagrams have been generated, from which one can choose suitable operating parameters.

The model has been solved numerically for Andrews kinetics ( substrate inhibition ), and tested experimentally, using a 5-liter fill-and-draw reactor with phenol as sole carbon source and a pure culture of Pseudomonas putida. Results compared very well to the model predictions.

Processing Hazardous Materials Risk Information, W. David Conn, William L. Owens, Richard C. Rich, Jarol B. Manheim

City and Regional Planning

This is the final report on Phase 1 of this project, conducted between March and October, 1988, under Cooperative Agreement No. 814921. It addresses the issue of environmental risk communication under Title III of the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA). That act calls for the creation in each state of Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPCs) which are to include representatives of local government; police, fire, hospital and other emergency response and public health agencies; facilities likely to use hazardous materials covered by SARA; community groups and the media. Each LEPC's initial responsibility has been to develop a …

Measurement Of Fungicide Smoke Application By Electron Beam Analysis, C. R. Krause, C. C. Powell Dec 1988

Measurement Of Fungicide Smoke Application By Electron Beam Analysis, C. R. Krause, C. C. Powell

Scanning Microscopy

Low volume fungicide smoke particle deposits were studied with scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Under greenhouse conditions, particles deposited on Rhododendron leaf surfaces and onto inert, carbon planchets adjacent to Rhododendron leaves were characterized by electron beam analysis. Angular particles containing chlorine, identified as vinclozolin deposition, were quantified on a per unit area basis. Leaf samples collected from plants immediately adjacent to the smoke applicator had more particles than leaf samples collected elsewhere. More deposition was measured on leaf surfaces than on inert planchet surfaces. This study increased our knowledge about the effectiveness of using less fungicide …

USD News Scrapbooks

Scrapbook of University of San Diego newspaper clippings titled "1988 Clippings Scrap Book" covering topics such as athletics, courses, events, Mother Teresa's visit to USD, and the Schools of Law, Business, and Nursing. Clippings in this scrapbook are arranged chronologically. Bookmarks have been added to the PDF for direct access to specific dates. While Optical Character Recognition (OCR) has been performed on this PDF, the condition of the scrapbooks limits the reliability. Researchers are not advised to rely on OCR to find articles on specific topics.

Paradox, Poetry, And Eternity: Socrates, Parmenides, And Nietzsche, Scott Austin Dec 1988

Paradox, Poetry, And Eternity: Socrates, Parmenides, And Nietzsche, Scott Austin

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Abstractly, some metalanguages and their allied languages are such that the metalinguistic truths cannot be put into the language itself without a (fruitful or devastating) paradox which breaks the very rules which the metalanguage itself enunciates for the language. Others are such that the transposition of metalanguage into language occurs without difficulty. The status of philosophy as a purported "science of all sciences" from classical times to the present hangs on this difference; for, unless there can be speech about speech in one’s own (however elaborated) natural language, the metaphysical enterprise sooner or later topples, to be replaced by faith, …

The Use Of Scanning Electron Microscopy For Investigations Into The Three Dimensional Organisation Of The Interphase Nucleus, T. D. Allen, P. M. O'Connor Dec 1988

The Use Of Scanning Electron Microscopy For Investigations Into The Three Dimensional Organisation Of The Interphase Nucleus, T. D. Allen, P. M. O'Connor

Scanning Microscopy

In an attempt to elucidate three dimensional information on the organisation of the nucleus, nuclei have been extracted from ascites tumour cells or tissue culture cells by a variety of biochemical techniques, and prepared for high resolution scanning electron microscopy using an osmium-thiocarbo-hydrazide infiltration procedure which has previously proved successful for analysis of chromosome structure. Nuclei were prefixed with either Methanol-Acetic acid, glutaraldehyde or formaldehyde and then extracted by a variety of detergents with the aim of a 'biochemical dissection' of their outer elements to allow surface visualisation of the nuclear lamina. Continued extraction removed all aspects of the nuclear …
