1982.2 - Housing Arlington, Martin Price, Randol Byrd, Kevin Crumpler

School of Architecture Student Projects

Design work from the 1982 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Housing. Randol Byrd and Kevin Crumpler. The Arlington housing project is an urban model which creates lyrical form by subtracting volumes of space from an overall sloping roof plane. It is making "hollow in bump." The diagonal line creates a basic order of form in this multi-unit project. Subtle folds of the sloping roof, together with the bending of walls, create a natural, meandering rhythmic order. Stepped windows intersect stepped solid areas below the windows, to form a yin-yang relationship.

Nontranscribed Spacer Sequences Promote In Vitro Transcription Of Drosophila Ribosomal Dna, Bruce D. Kohorn, Peter M.M. Rae Nov 1982

Nontranscribed Spacer Sequences Promote In Vitro Transcription Of Drosophila Ribosomal Dna, Bruce D. Kohorn, Peter M.M. Rae

Biology Faculty Publications

Tandem repeats of ribosomal RNA transcription units in Drosophila melanogaster are separated by a nontranscribed spacer that is comprised in part of serial repeats of a 0.24 kb sequence. DNA sequence analysis shows that such repeats are imperfect copies of a region that includes the site of in vivo rRNA transcription initiation (ca. -240 to +30). Subclones of the rDNA spacer that are copies of the sequence extending from -34 through the initiation site support detectable in vitro transcription in a mixture involving a Drosophila cell-free extract, but accurate in vitro transcription is considerably enhanced when a nontranscribed spacer template …

Dispermic Origin And Clinical Outcome Of Three Complete Hydatidiform Moles With 46,Xy Karyotype, U. Surti, A. E. Szulman, S. O'Brien Sep 1982

Dispermic Origin And Clinical Outcome Of Three Complete Hydatidiform Moles With 46,Xy Karyotype, U. Surti, A. E. Szulman, S. O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

Three new cases of complete, classic hydatidiform mole with a 46,XY karyotype are described. They originated by dispermy as demonstrated by chromosome and enzyme analyses. Levels of human chorionic gonadotropin decreased to normal spontaneously within a short time, indicating a benign course in these three cases. Of a total of 18 cases reported to date, postoperative clinical information was available for 10 patients. Two of these 10 patients had a malignant course with lung metastases. It is of theoretical and clinical importance to establish the magnitude of the risk of malignancy for hydatidiform mole with a 46,XY karyotype. © 1982.

Eleven Year Vegetational Comparison In An Arid Grassland, Edgar F. Kleiner Jan 1982

Eleven Year Vegetational Comparison In An Arid Grassland, Edgar F. Kleiner

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

A study has been made of the vegetational condition of two graben valleys in Canyonlands National Park. The sites, formerly subjected to relatively heavy grazing pressure, were originally investigated in 1970 and analyzed again in 1981, providing an eleven-year record of succession. Comparisons are made to successional trends noted in related studies of disturbed and pristine areas. The graben valleys, with few exceptions, show a successional trend over eleven years toward the climax vegetational condition of an area that has never been disturbed.

Factors Influencing Development Of Cryptogamic Soil Crusts In Utah Deserts, David C. Anderson, Kimball T. Harper, Ralph C. Holmgren Jan 1982

Factors Influencing Development Of Cryptogamic Soil Crusts In Utah Deserts, David C. Anderson, Kimball T. Harper, Ralph C. Holmgren

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

The relation of some physical and chemical soil characteristics to cryptogamic crust development was determined from sites in semidesert regions of southern Utah. The effects of grazing on cryptogamic crust development also was examined. Electrical conductivity, percentage silt, and soil phosphorus were found to be correlated with well-developed cryptogamic crusts. Both total cryptogamic cover and the number of cryptogamic species decreased under grazing pressure. The management of rangelands, especially in arid regions, would be strengthened by understanding the role of cryptogamic crusts and considering them in range management decisions.
