The Death Of Privacy, Darren W. Bax Jan 2000

The Death Of Privacy, Darren W. Bax

Theses

This thesis will focus on the issue of personal privacy and the growing threat to its existence in a technological society.

The areas most associated with privacy loss include increased government intrusions, legislation, workplace, healthcare industry, Internet, and identity theft. Chapter one provides a historical perspective beginning with primitive culture and their struggle to maintain privacy in the lives. Interesting enough, privacy protection was not mentioned by the judicial system until 1880 when privacy was defined as the "right to be left alone." To address concerns about privacy reform the Supreme Court cited this right of privacy as having " …

Exploring Participation Processes For Technology Development: Case Studies Of Biotechnology Research And Development Projects In Thailand, Omjai Yuktavetya

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

There is increased awareness in the organizational and management literature that participation can make contributions in technology development. One of the problems in developing biotechnology in Thailand is that only a small portion of publicly funded research and development projects directly result in commercial success. Among the reasons cited (TDRI 1992a) is a lack of collaboration between various stakeholders; therefore, an effective technology policy to support their participation is needed. This research explores current participation processes in biotechnology research and development projects in Thailand in which there were different perspectives among various stakeholders. The quantitative and qualitative methodologies developed here …

Technology Partnership Curriculum Initiative: A Descriptive Case Study Of Its History, Development, And Implementation, Ingrid Wright-Jones

Dissertations

Problem

Curricular reform has a pathetic history. Curriculum documents, some of the major tools of reformers, have had a minor effect on transforming education because the power of pedagogy has been ignored (Cuban, 1993). Teachers in the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) system voiced similar concerns about curriculum documents. Additionally, they felt that their 2-4-day in-service training did not adequately prepare them to implement curricular changes. This initiative, aimed at restructuring both the content and process of teaching, was to be implemented in a distance-learning pilot project in eight one-teacher schools.

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to: (1) define the …

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

As the entertainment world explodes with the products of new technology and innovation, the difference between reality and fiction often times results in a blur. Computer graphics and story lines all encompass a real-life quality being sold to millions of consumers each day. A billion-dollar industry has resulted from the progress made by technology in the film, music, television, and movie industry. With the steps taken to create such real-life hardship, massacre, and unrest the question is how much have the technology and availability of products containing violent material affected society? Does the responsibility to monitor these products rely on …

Shifting Reality, Nancy Crosby

Theses

Let me begin by saying, I have been raised Catholic, and all of my life I have been influenced strongly by my beliefs. Because of my devotion to my faith, I have been bombarded by fantastic iconography and images which seem to proclaim the presence of not only an omnipotent being who reigns over all of mankind, but also, the existence of another realm or realms beyond this insignificant way station known as earth. Throughout the continual passing of time, humanity has vigorously tried to give face to the invisible manipulators who seem to influence their thoughts and actions. On …

The Mechanics Of Low Orbiting Satellites Implications In Communication, Lane Brostrom May 1985

The Mechanics Of Low Orbiting Satellites Implications In Communication, Lane Brostrom

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Low orbiting satellite communication networks will be competing with geosynchronous satellites for a share of the communications market. In world-wide communications that do not require immediate real time transmissions, low orbiting satellites are competitive with geosynchronous satellites because the system is reliable and low in cost.

Since satellites are a clear example of Newtonian laws, the distinct patterns they make in their orbiting process are predictable. Newton's law states that an object will remain in uniform motion unless acted upon by a force: a satellite remains in motion around the earth because there is no atmosphere to slow it down. …
